Getting an Apple store would be awesome. I wish it'd be downtown, but I'll take one anywhere.

An Apple Store is much more of a signal as to where your city stands than a Cheesecake Factory.

I emailed the guy that runs that site. He says there has been no official announcement, and to watch for job listings on Apple's website. This is the usual course for a new Apple Store announcement. I'm under the impression he has an impeccable track record on this topic, but until there's an announcement, I guess this remains a rumor.

I always figured it was just a matter of time before one opened there, but I never figured it would be a matter of THIS MUCH time. I'd love to see one of the smaller mini-stores downtown or in the OM at some point, too.

BTW, anyone know where it might go? Is there available space? I don't see Apple popping up a new building in Omaha for one of these (but I hope I'm wrong!). These stores really raise the bar for non-apparel retail.

What's the big deal about an Apple store? I went to one in Denver last weekend and all the |expletive| they sell you can buy at Best Buy or online. Is is just a status thing? I guess I just don't get it

The whole point of Apple stores is that they sell thing that you can otherwise only find online. You can go to the store and play with Final Cut Pro, recording software and a number of other things you don't get to do at any other computer store (at least not to my knowledge). The larger ones also have lots of classes and free seminars that are usually really interesting.

Plus Apple is the computer of choice for graphic and print designers, and it's practically a handicap that Omaha doesn't already have one.

The one here in downtown SF is pretty cool, especially since they justed added a lucite (i.e. completely see-through) staircase to the second floor.

For one, every Apple Store I've been in (Mall of America, DC, Baltimore (Towson), and NYC), the staff is by far more knowledgeable as a whole about computers as a whole than any other store I've been in. It doesn't seem their knowledge is limited to THEIR products, but how they work well with things they don't even have.

And no, you can't buy a full range of Apple/Mac products (the company is APPLE, the computer is MACINTOSH - think Chevrolet/Corvette) at Best Buy or any other box or specialty store. When you can't see how these things line up against one another, or how they integrate, you're missing a big part of what makes Apple, Macs and OS X special.

And yeah... it's a bit of a status thing.

I've been testing the MacBook Pro and comparing it to both a late-model PowerBook and a roughly similar Windows laptop, the new H-P Pavilion dv5000t. All three machines have 15-inch-wide screen displays.

My verdict: The MacBook Pro is better than the PowerBook and better than the H-P, though it has some drawbacks. It is faster than previous Apple laptops, but the speedup isn't as great as Apple's claims suggest. At a starting price of $1,999, the same as the PowerBook it replaces, the MacBook Pro costs more than the H-P. But in my opinion, the price premium is more than justified by its superior design and features.

The speed difference is misleading... I could go into Intel vs PowerPC chips and Universal Binaries and Rosetta blah blah blah. The new Intel based Macs WILL scorch the old PowerPC based chips when all is said in done. It's a big software transition right now, but the stuff that HAS been transferred is blowing the doors off the old stuff.

I don't know how I missed this thread! I would LOVE to have an Apple store here. I can't afford to plink down $500 on Aperture to try it out (no trial versions available) and all Apple stores have demos that I can run some RAW files through.

Also, Apple stores accept student discounts so I can have my friends purchase stuff on my behalf! No other Apple reseller in Omaha can offer that.

I need to go see what the student price of Aperture is.....

Ok, I give in. I'm now hooked on those I-pods and will probably go to the Apple store here (Denver) to buy one. Any suggestions. I don't want to spend more than $200...what's better, the mini or the nano??? Any ideas would help. Thanks

the mini they don't sell anymore. get a nano if you don't care about the video. Howerver, if you do want video get the video ipod for only 50 bucks more than the biggest nano.

If you are much of a music nut at all go with a fullsize version. the nano will be too small after you fall in love with it. I have had one for a year and you cannot pry it from my hands. Had to get a second (mini) for my wife too. We are not in the typical age demo that you see them market to either. ( school was a long time ago)

Spend a few more bucks and get a 30 gig unit. I use mine for audiobooks too for a change of pace. Buy them, go to the library, or buy used on ebay and then rip them like a CD. Have 4 books and 3500 songson my pod now.

That's cool news. I switched to a Mac last summer and bought a PowerBook at the Cherry Creek Mall store. Then I went back later and bought the SimCity 4 Mac version. I can't believe how reliable Macs are - I'll never go back!!

Reliable yes but there is a trade off - limitation.
I haven’t had one of my PCs crash in the past 7 years. But I suppose after all my education in electronics engineering, telecommunications and other computer sciences I know what I am doing.
I can’t wait until the quad SLI is out, when do you think a G6 will get four GPUs?

Ill admit macs and peripherals definitely are quite prettier then IBM compatible machines. Even after my programming class I realized how hard programming is and often imagined how complex an OS is. So now when people |expletive| about it I simply ask if they know how to program a better OS. I got turned off by macs at a young age when I built and maintained a mac network in HS. And also mac fanboys usually come off as arrogant elitist. Plus I love to hack the heck out of my systems and I cant mod a mac like I can a PC.

*sigh* You mac people don't even know what GPU means. GPU is Graphics Processing Unit... the video card. SLI is scan line interleave. 4 GPUs means you can have 4 graphics cards each rendering 1/4 of the lines on a screen, therefore increasing your graphics performance 4x over that of a single card. And if any of you tell me that mac HW outperforms PC HW ever again, i will roll my eyes and walk away

Apple's an extremely niche market, and it will likely remain that way. Lack of software and lack of high end hardware (such as SLI-capable systems). There are people content without the games and whatnot that they cannot get. I read an article where the author put it this way. Microsoft genuinely wants to help the consumer by responding to the things consumers tell them they want. Apple genuinely wants to help the consumer by telling the consumer what it is the consumers want.
