The Sopranos

My wife had a three-season series that she wanted to watch, and we needed to purchase it until I found that it streamed on Max+. I subscribed to MAX+ rather than purchasing it. The break-even point is just less than four months, so we will see if we cancel at that point, but as I get sidetracked, I will get back to my purpose of the post:

I watched The Sopranos when it was originally aired every season, starting with season 1 in 1999. I always have felt that this was one of the best things HBO did, especially at that time. It's hard to believe it is that old of a show, though. Since I have access to it, I decided to rewatch it from start to finish.

I am about 1/2 way through season two, and it has been long enough that my memory of the storylines is just long enough ago to make watching it work well. About 25 years later, it stands the test of time, in my opinion. It is as good as I remember. What is surprising to some extent is the background items, like TVs, Cars, phones, and items in restaurants, really stand out as being 25 years old. I wasn't expecting that to catch my eye.

There are six seasons in total, so we will see if it holds up, but so far, I am re-hooked. I am getting about three hour-long episodes in a week.

Now, don't anyone go and point the ending for me!

Anyone else watch this during it's original run or watch it all since then?

If I get all of this rewatched, then it will be on to rewatching The Wire and Six Feet Under

I watched it all the way through for the first time about 3 years ago, and I left it thinking it is a top 5 drama series all time, probably top 3 for me. Just incredibly engaging all the way through. A lot of series get formulaic or repetitive to keep a conflict point alive, but Sopranos never does.

I knocked out the Sopranos last year and then The Wire shortly after. Both were great.

I am most of the way through season four now. One thing I never noticed watching it a week at a time when it was on originally is how much Coke / Diet Coke is featured. I wonder what Coke paid for the in-show sponsorship. There are distinctive uses of the product in every episode.

The feature of Coke / Diet Coke seems more prominent than the use of all illegal drugs!
