I-80 signs on the iowa side
Why aren't there signs that say, "Downtown Omaha" as you travel west on I-80/I-29??

Re: I-80 signs on the iowa side
Likely because of interstate signage standards. Omaha is the control city as the main focus of WB traffic on that section vs a more specific destination of "downtown" that isn't technically a destination on either I80 or I29.

I think as a traveler / visitor coming to Omaha, I would like to know the fastest route to downtown or the old market or college, World Series, etc.

In the year 2024 most people have at least one, if not 2 or 3 GPS deceives with them at any given time. If they truly want the fastest route, they already mapped it out and are not looking for road side signs.

The last thing I will use to determine the best way to go someplace is the road signs. All they do in this day and age is confirm I might be on the right road if I am in unfamiliar territoryImissomaha wrote: Mon Apr 22, 2024 7:33 pm I think as a traveler / visitor coming to Omaha, I would like to know the fastest route to downtown or the old market or college, World Series, etc.
For the record NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER !!!!!!!

I've always found it interesting you see signs for "North Omaha". I guess it makes sense since 680 is a place to turn, but I always found it funny. As if North Omaha is much of a destination. They also have those signs on HWY 275 for HWY 36. It is nice when coming back to town, if you live on the north end like I do, you don't actually have to go through much of Omaha to make it home.

How about Des Moines mainly having signs for Council Bluffs, as opposed to Omaha when you pass through that city. I actually think that's more odd. Who in the world knows what Council Bluffs is?Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Apr 22, 2024 8:56 pm I've always found it interesting you see signs for "North Omaha". BTW, they did remove the "North Omaha" sign outside CB as you're heading west on I-80. If I recall correctly, it's simply Omaha regardless if you take I-880 or I-80.

I did notice on my most recent trip to KC that "South Bellevue" is now posted at what I thought was the Glenwood/US34 exit on I-29.

Kansas City does the same. They have signs for i29 N for St Joseph and only after you pass St Joseph, are there signs for Council Bluffs as if Omaha was hidden.Nebraska>Iowa wrote: Tue Apr 23, 2024 2:25 am

It's funny, both Kansas City and Des Moines point to each other but Omaha is non existent from both Des Moines i80 and Kansas City i29.
Maybe this is how interstate city name standards are, always pointing at the next nearby population center and not between bigger cities.
I'm curious to know if other places skip small city name and just mention the bigger city name from the other city.

In this example, it is. Because I-29 doesn’t go through Omaha, Council Bluffs will be the listed city. The signs should be in reference to off-ramps.Renovator2559 wrote: Tue Apr 23, 2024 2:45 am

Re: I-80 signs on the iowa side
For those signs, you are already in Cincinnati and Toledo, respectively, the control cities where those images were taken.
A similar scenario exists on I80 within Omaha. At the 680/80 (WB) and 480/80 (EB & WB) splits signs specifically call out "Downtown", but, again, at that point you are in the control city (Omaha). At the 480/29 split (prior to construction) the signs there also only call out "Omaha", though downtown being right there is pretty obvious.

Re: I-80 signs on the iowa side
My thoughts exactly and I am glad that Iowa was given the rights to build i29 on their side because most likely Omaha's riverfront would probably have been walled off with i29 if built in Nebraska. Other cities can attest to their riverfront being walled off by a highway. Also IowaDOT has done a fine job in making i29 look nice.NEDodger wrote: Tue Apr 23, 2024 3:18 amIn this example, it is. How could I have missed that? You are right Des Moines not only points to Council Bluffs but also Omaha in one sign.
You would think that KC would do the same and point to both St Joseph and Council Bluffs but there are probably other reasons.

Re: I-80 signs on the iowa side
Like the other posters mentioned, I'm assuming it is a nomenclature technicality given I-29 doesn't touch Omaha. However, obviously when someone on I-29 ends up approaching Omaha from either North or South they're directed to Omaha on I-80/I-480/ or I-680Renovator2559 wrote: Wed Apr 24, 2024 12:20 am How could I have missed that? Re: I-80 signs on the iowa side
There's currently work underway in the i480 segment, with multiple lane closures as well, as the Dodge exit is closed. There were several workers working on the side light fixtures on the i480 Missouri bridge.
Iowa changed their motto from "Fields of Opportunity" to "Freedom to Flourish" in 2023.
Though I don't recall seeing the new signage until today?
