Reubenfest is happening this week.

We tried the Reuben:
Egg Rolls
Taquitos
Soup
Burrito
Bratwurst
Stroganoff
Smoked Reuben.

The Smoked Reuben is still my favorite. The Bratwurst was my favorite new item. The Stroganoff was a good idea, but I think fell short of "Reuben Status".

Beertopia is closing their store

https://www.facebook.com/BeertopiaOmaha
We have made the difficult decision to close our retail store, Beertopia. We will begin to liquidate inventory effective today. At this time we do not have a set closing date, as it will hinge on the depletion of current stock, which we think will take 2-3 months. Once we know a final day we will publish that date.
Beertopia opened 17 years ago in 2007 and was a pioneer in the retail beer industry, offering Omaha a unique store dedicated to great beers. Many beers offered in the state were exclusive to Beertopia because we were the only ones willing to take a chance on bringing them into the market. We are proud of what this little store accomplished over that time. Today, the retail liquor market has changed vastly from what it was all those years ago.
We want to thank our loyal customers for supporting a small family owned retail store for all these years; it has certainly been a pleasure to serve you. The next time you raise a glass of great beer, toast to Beertopia for helping pave the way to making those beers available to you!
Prost and keep drinking great beer!
Q and A
I have a gift card can I still redeem it?
Yes of course. Gift cards should be redeemed as soon as possible to take advantage of the best selection; however, they will be honored for as long as the store is open.
I have rewards points I have been accumulating, what happens to those?
Same answer as above. Please redeem rewards point sooner than later to take advantage of the best selection. Due to discounts, no reward points will be issued going forward.
How does this affect Crescent Moon, Huber Haus and Max and Joe’s?
Those businesses are not affected by this closure, it is business as usual for them.
Can I still order a keg for pickup?
Yes, for the time being we will still process keg orders; however, we will not be able to provide tubs or taps for kegs and all kegs must be pre-paid.
Do you have plans for the space?
The short answer is yes. We are in the midst of planning for the space’s exciting next incarnation. We will make an announcement when we have plans finalized.
Will you still hold Beertopia’s Ulitimate Beer Festival and the Holiday Beer Fest?
There are no plans to discontinue these annual traditions.

They had a great selection, but it was just so far out of my way. A lot lot of other stores have stepped up their craft beer game in the last 17+ years since Beertopia opened. IIRC, they had a pretty good selection of Belgian beer and other imports. Though, I always wondered how much of that product they moved. I get really paranoid about the possibility of buying a beer that's been sitting on a shelf for like 8 years. lol

I liked Beertopia, but when the Casual Pint opened 7 blocks from my house, I just never really went back to Beertopia.

I used to frequent Beertopia, but honestly, haven’t made a purchase there for at least 6 years..

All this said, sad to hear yesterday they plan to close…

I don’t think of the SE corner of 72nd and Pacific as being Aksarben Village.
That aside, these mega liquor/wine stores can be a fun shopping experience. The one out next to Oakview got the ball rolling several years ago. Hy-Vee jumped on the bandwagon shortly thereafter with their freestanding stores not physically connected to their groceries. The outfit out of the Ozarks will join the fray soon. I doubt that the end result will be more alcohol sold and consumed in Omaha, but rather a redistribution of where people spend their money. Maybe the local wine shops will feel the pinch. Maybe the grocery stores.

Oooooooh! Okay, yeah. When I hear "Aksarben Village" I don't necessarily envision 72nd & Pacific, but now I know what you're talking about. Thanks!

personally, i think Reubens are one of the best types of sandwiches there are. I'm not as much of a Cuban sandwich type of guy so I'd put it last out of the group, but I'll admit, that last philly looked about as perfect of a sandwich as you can get

As it should be. It's been a hot minute since I had the Reuben from Crescent Moon, but it definitely deserves that honor. I'd be dammed if the best Reuben in the world isn't at Crescent Moon.

The Rye Bread and the Thousand Island Dressing always scared me off of trying a Reuben. :/

But not the sauerkraut? :;): lol

In all honesty though, a Reuben is probably one of the most flavorful food combinations I can think of. I hated everything remotely flavorful as a kid, and Ironically, now I'm completely opposite from how I was.

You go down the list and everything that makes a Reuben so delicious is off-putting to a large constituent of people.

Rye Bread
Thousand Island Dressing
Corned Beef
Sauerkraut

Pair it with big a licorice-y Munchen beer, and you really can't get any further from flavor-neutral. I'm talking myself into going to Crescent Moon soon lol.

I protest Rye Bread being called Rye Bread. The overwhelming flavor isn't from the rye flour used to make it, but from the copious amount of caraway seed. It should really be called Caraway Bread.

Reubens must be one of those sandwiches where, individually, the ingredients aren't especially yummy, but when combined it all comes together. I'll have to break down and try one someday.

There is very good rye bread that is made without Caraway seed, and some made with very little. I love good Rye bread but not with much if any caraway. HyVee baked is store New York Salted Rye is very good. Give it a try.
We also make it at home on occasion and have an old recipe from my Grandma that does not use Caraway and it is my go to.
