Big Ten Media Days Schedule Released:
Story Lines on EVERY Football Team

The Big Ten just released its college football Media Days schedule in Indianapolis in July. It's time for March Madness now and Spring Football hasn’t started yet, but once Big Ten Media Days get here it means college football is here! We can already imagine Commissioner Tony Petitti welcoming the Oregon Ducks, Washington Huskies, UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans to the league. We can imagine the press conferences with Ohio State football coach Ryan Day answering questions about his championship-or-bust season or his new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Sherrone Moore will be asked how this year's team will compare to last year's. Dan Lanning will be asked about Oregon football and it's ability to compete in the Big 10 right away. The questions will go on and on and we will predict them all right here on Locked on Big 10!

Big 10 Ready for NCAA Tournament with 6 Men's, 7 Women's Teams

Six Men's and seven Women's Big 10 teams are going to the NCAA Basketball Tournament following Selection Sunday. On the Men's side the Purdue Boilermakers earned a top seed and will play the winner of Montana State vs Grambling State. And the Boilermakers get to play close to home in Indianapolis. After looking at the brackets, we think the Nebraska Huskers and the Wisconsin Badgers have the best path to a deep run.

CAITLIN CLARK
On the ladies' side, Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes have a brutal bracket in their region. Iowa basketball starts off vs the winner of Holy Cross vs UT-Martin.

Congratulations to Jake Diebler who earned the Ohio State Buckeyes head basketball coaching gig after winning 6 of 7 after taking over for fired Chris Holtmann mid-season.

BRING BEILEIN BACK?
And, would John Beilein return to Ann Arbor to coach the Michigan Wolverines following Juwan Howard's firing on Friday? A college football Super Conference idea is gaining momentum but it is nothing like anything you have imagined before. The idea would also blow up the Big Ten as we know it. One thing is for certain; with Name Image and Likeness and Transfer Portal traffic and billions and billions of TV dollars floating around, there are many "experts" that are certain college football cannot maintain its current hectic pace and survive as is.

SUPER CONFERENCE
At Locked on Big 10 we do think more change is coming to college football and our Conference. But we have always predicted a reasonable path to some sort of Super Conference or Super Conferences alignment. To some extent it is inevitable. But some of these ideas from others are crazy. And the people that cannot make up their minds on how to execute a 12 team playoff format vs a 14 team playoff format are the ones planning the future of college football. Yikes! Maybe we need to volunteer our services to be the Commissioner or Czar of college football.

Also, since college basketball is over we need to turn our attention to college football, specifically, spring football games begin this weekend and we need to keep our eyes on some developing storylines.

I stumbled across an old Nebraska-Colorado game on YouTube the other day believe it was 1996 Ol Frosty was the QB. Man was Nebraska good back then, they actually looked bigger than they do now and played very disciplined physical football. It was fun watching the game. Hate to say it but I think those days are gone forever. There weren’t as many good teams back then especially in the South. The football environment just changed over time and now we have a football era with most of the good teams in southern states. And teams like Nebraska In sparsely populated cold weather states are left out of the mix. Kind of sad really. College football sure has changed. The SEC pretty much is we’re most of the talent is with the exception of a few other teams like Ohio State, Michigan and some West coast schools like Washington, USC and Oregon.

Right, hate to be overly Negative on this but Nebraska’s record the last 10 years or so isn’t pretty. Maybe things will turn around again.

College football just feels different now with NIL and the SEC dominance, not as much fun for us northerners out on the plains anymore. Starting to watch mostly just the NFL and less college.

Florida State Could Join Expanded Big 10 Sooner Than Later

Florida State could join the expanded Big 10 sooner than later according to Florida State athletic director Michael Alford. While speaking recently to FSU Alumni and Boosters at an event in Chicago, Alford hinted he may be in the area a lot more beginning this summer. It should be noted that the Big 10 offices were just a few miles away in Rosemont, Illinois.

LAWSUIT CITY
Florida State and Clemson are embroiled in separate lawsuits attempting to extract themselves from the ACC so they can join more lucrative conferences like the Big 10 or SEC. Hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake and everything hinges on these court cases. Or a settlement could be in the works. Stay tuned!

BADGER QUARTERBACK BATTLE
Last week we updated everyone on the Wisconsin football quarterback situation. We have an update as a front runner seems to be emerging. Offensive coordinator Phil Longo says the situation will play itself out.

Huskers Hype Surging for Nebraska Football in 2024

The Nebraska football hype has reached fever pitch following the arrival of freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola this spring. The 60,000 fans on hand for their spring game and those that watched on a national telecast are still talking about Raiola and his performance. And it just seemed like everything else looked better with him on the field.

Nebraska football fans know this team was good last year but it turned the ball over and could not figure out the quarterback position. If Raiola is the quarterback fix and if the turnovers get cut in half then this team will go bowling for the first time since 2016. We think 2024 looks very promising!

LOTS OF BUCKEYES QB'S
Ohio State football is rolling. If you think they have a crowded quarterback room now with 5 QB's, Chip Kelly has offered 9 high school quarterbacks scholarships. He can recruit as well as call plays. And he reminds us you can never have enough quarterbacks, right?

Revenue Sharing to Force Notre Dame to Big Ten

Notre Dame football will no longer be able to remain a college football Independent once a settlement is reached in the House vs NCAA antitrust lawsuit. The fruit of this suit will start the unprecedented era of revenue sharing among major athletic departments and its student athletes.

REVENUE SHARING
While Notre Dame receives substantial revenue from NBC for its football broadcast rights and media rights money from the ACC for its non-football sports, there will not be enough money for them to survive once each major school is forced to shell out 30 million dollars a year for the next 10 years as part of a revenue share settlement.

MORE MONEY ELSEWHERE
Joining a major conference like the Big Ten with much higher TV revenues will be Notre Dame's only business model for survival. Surely we will get hate mail from the Golden Domers who insist Notre Dame will be an Independent until the end of time. But the times in college football are changing too fast. Adapt or die.

Power 4 Athletic Director Predicts Bottom Schools Expelled

Will the Big Ten expel any lower tier schools like Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana or Rutgers? Big 12 Athletic Director Jaimie Pollard from Iowa State says yes! He feels the TV networks that are paying the Big Ten conference billions of dollars will want more competitive college football games and more ratings and revenue.

CONFERENCE CONTRACTION
We do not think Pollard is way off in his thinking but we don't think the lower performing teams in the Big Ten have anything to worry about. We will explain why. We will, however, tell you which teams DO need to worry about being left out as the Super Conferences continue to grow.

RUNNING BACK CONTROVERSY?
We have all heard of quarterback controversies. But do we have a running back controversy inside of Ohio State football? You might think so but it sounds like Ryan Day has peace inside his running backs room. Plus we list several benefits to having multiple starting running backs on hand.

Kel'el Ware had an awesome year at Indiana this season and he is quickly moving up the mock drafts ahead of next month's NBA draft. He explains how coach Mike Woodson and company are responsible for his rise.

i think it's bad for college football if they expel lower tier schools from conferences. It may be good for business, but bad for football. That's a huge recruiting tool to be in a major conference for schools that aren't ohio state, michigan, penn state, or even Nebraska. They will just be widening the gap between the perennial power houses and schools that would otherwise have a chance at legitimacy.

On the other hand, 16, 18, 20, and 24 team conferences aren't good either. As far as football goes, expelling smaller and/or lesser performing programs would just essentially recreate the Big East football conference. That wouldn't be so bad, and they could even vie for their own auto bid. The hard part in all that is that some of the schools that aren't so good at football are good at other sports.

Will Iowa Football Coach Kirk Ferentz Retire like Lisa Bluder?

Will Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz retire soon? We were not sure but when Hawkeyes women's coach Lisa Bluder stepped down after 24 seasons, we thought we would reconsider Ferentz and his future as it relates to college football.

WILL KIRK FERENTZ RETIRE?
Coach Ferentz is 68 years old and is going into his 26th season in charge of Iowa football. The school just fired his son and there is a new athletic director in place. Add the frustrations of Name, Image and Likeness and constant transfer portal issues, maybe the winds of change will blow in Ferentz's direction after the 2024 season. We will explore the pros and cons and see if new offensive coordinator Tim Lester is part of a transition plan at Iowa football.

HERE WE GO AGAIN
It could be Déjà vu with Ohio State football in 2024. Last year Ryan Day oversaw a quarterback competition that lasted two weeks into the season. This year he has 5 more quarterbacks fighting for the job and Day insists he wants this issue sorted out sooner than later. We have some thoughts on it.

Nebraska and Penn State are Scaling Back Stadium Renovations?

Why are Nebraska and Penn State scaling back massive football stadium renovations? Are Big Ten schools running out of money? That seems unlikely because yesterday we learned the Big Ten Conference earned $880 million dollars in FY 2023. And that was before their massive new TV deals kicked in? So what's the problem?

CASH FLOW
Well, for starters, each school is going to kick in 20-30 million dollars a year for the next decade from the House vs NCAA lawsuit settlement. That's right! As we have claimed many times on Locked on Big 10, college football and college athletics in general is about to get kicked in the rear to the tune of several billions of dollars. Older, outdated stadiums may have to do for a while. Click here as we discuss this further.

SPYGATE
Connor Stalions, the accused mastermind behind the Michigan football Spygate scandal, is in the news again. That is because Michigan State Athletic Director Alan Haller is upset with the NCAA and Central Michigan because he has yet to hear from either of them as to if that was Stalions on the sideline of the season opener between CMU vs MSU, and, if so, why he was permitted to be there.

The Big Ten and all other conferences are in the process of signing off on the NCAA multi-billion dollar settlement in the House vs NCAA lawsuit. The NCAA would have lost this suit in which they are accused of suppressing student athlete's ability to earn money before Name, Image and Likeness came into being.

PREPARE TO PAY
This settlement will force Power 5 schools to pay into a new revenue share program for past, current and future players to the tune of 20 million dollars a year for the next decade.

How will this settlement effect future Big Ten expansion? We will discuss that on Locked on Big 10.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Fox has its Friday night college football package out and it includes a heavy dose of Big Ten teams. In fact, all 4 west coast teams will have at least one Friday night tilt.

They just announced on the broadcast of today’s game that the Big 10 has signed an extension to keep the tournament in Omaha for another 3 years.

That is great news. Really none of the other sites had attendance at all. The story from OWH mentioned that neither Minneapolis or Bloomington drew more than 7,000 total fans. This years was just over 39,000 in Omaha.

Maybe someday they will bring the Big 10 basketball tournament here. That is a much bigger draw and will do well!

Yeah I don't think that's a possibility. While I am glad the Big 10 doesn't limit itself to one city I don't think Omaha would join the rotation of Chicago and Indy. They added Minneapolis this year which I hope becomes a regular stop. It's great in all 3 of those cities. It did go out to the east coast a couple times since they added Maryland and Rutgers, so I could see a rare trip out west in the future (Vegas?) since we are added the 4 western teams.

I really hope the primary rotation stays in Minneapolis, Chicago and Indy. They are drivable but also have good air service too.
