The old Plattsmouth high school is getting turned into 26 apartments as well as adding two new apartment buildings on the campus. Vireo manufacture is expanding and adding over 200 jobs to the area. Good get for the small town.

This really is great news for Plattsmouth. The high school has been long vacant and has been a topic of conversion into apartments for years. It is added to the Apartment Map and to The apartment index.

The article states "Video Resources" will be expanding, adding 200 jobs. Pretty generic name to search and I think typo. I do see news about Vireo Resources Expanding Vireo Holistic Products for People and pets plans to add 200 to 300 new jobs. I am not sure what they do but it says "Immune booster"

Plattsmouth's fairly flat population growth rate is surprising with the amount of business growth along 75 in the past 10 years. And its ever shrinking distance to the south edge of Bellevue.

Wasn't Plattsmouth affected by both the 2011 and 2019 floods? Is that the reason for the flat growth? Unlike parts of Texas and the South, people here don't seem to want to live in flood prone areas.

Very little of the town is actually in the flood plain. Most is in/on the bluffs. They did have water well issues with the flooding, but not much in the way of water damage to homes, etc.

Interesting. I have seen a handful of homes pop up in Zillow that look like a good deal, but discloses water damage from the flood. I thought those houses were in Plattsmouth proper, but I am not too familiar with Plattsmouth generally, other than their downtown.

At one point they tried building a new development On the river east of downtown and the 2011 floods got it. Other than that, I agree, other than a few random houses, the rest of the town is up on a hill.

Plattsmouth seems to be turning the corner. The downtown is impressive with it many century old buildings. Including the outstanding courthouse.

PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. — Floodwater swallowed most of Plattsmouth's wastewater treatment facility in 2019, inundating the piece of critical infrastructure. The seat of Cass County is set to break ground on the new, updated facility Friday. City officials say it marks the most significant step toward recovery since 2019. "We, unfortunately, as many cities along the river, discharged raw sewage into the river at that time," Mayor Paul Lambert said.

He remembers the city sent that sewage into the Missouri River. "The EPA understood. We worked with them closely. Constant communication, letting them know water level when we could get in and start working on the plant, which we did almost immediately to get it back online," Lambert said. Federal and state sources helped fund the two-year construction project to treat wastewater fully. The city administrator says it will help control water rates. The infrastructure will grow the city southwest, away from the Platte and Missouri rivers.

Quite a bit delayed here, but a lot of growth around Plattsmouth goes to some of the lake communities in the areas, especially Beaver Lake. Seems to a similar problem in many similar bedroom(ish) type communities with residents moving to the outskirts or subdivisions in the County and thus being outside of the City Limits and not counted. I would be curious to see the school district growth compared to the City's population

Crews battling brush fire during wind advisory Thursday in Cass County, Nebraska



PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. — Crews are battling a brush fire on a very windy day in Nebraska and Iowa. Dozens of volunteer firefighters were called to areas along the Missouri River outside Plattsmouth shortly after 1 p.m. as fire raced through dry farm fields and along ravines. Multiple agencies responded, including tanker trucks to deliver water to the scene.

By 4 p.m., fire crews felt they had the fires under control, but then a hot spot sparked another fire that jumped a road. Plattsmouth fire chief Mike Wilson said some of the structures in the area of the Plattsmouth Boat Club may have been lost. Firefighters are expected to remain on the scene for hours, due to the high winds.

High school turned affordable housing among several new developments in Plattsmouth

he small town of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, has big plans. From renovating historic buildings to expanding new businesses, a lot of major developments are underway.

People who live and work in Plattsmouth take a lot of pride in the small town with a population of roughly 6,500.

“We love the historic downtown look and everything and the feel of Plattsmouth,” said boutique owner Sarah Johnson.

However, they also welcome the new with the old, including the renovation of the old high school building.

gets new life in $16M project boosted by historic tax credits

PLATTSMOUTH, Nebraska — A basketball court was resurrected in this town’s old high school, though the hoop today is more for show than sport and is likely to become the backdrop for a trendy coffee bar. Chalkboards remain in what once were the chemistry and math rooms, now apartments. Look-alike book lockers line the main hallway, along with a vintage trophy case stuffed with Plattsmouth Blue Devils athletic relics. With a boost from public incentives, including state historic tax credits, the former Plattsmouth High School built more than a century ago is now fully transformed into an apartment building that has been brimming since March with residents. On Thursday, History Nebraska’s historic preservation office welcomed local, state and federal officials to a “Rehab Roadshow” that celebrated the nearly $16 million project. In addition to the 25 units in the rehabbed schoolhouse, which were responsible for the bulk of the cost, the price tag includes a 15-unit, newly constructed apartment structure nearby. The event was intended to highlight economic development tools that are available — and at least one that is at risk — to restore and reuse Nebraska landmarks.

Interesting update for a building built pre-Civil War that is set to get new life in Downtown Plattsmouth.

ANOTHER WELL KNOWN BUILDING GETS NEW LIFE — Renovations are underway to what many Plattsmouth locals refer to as “The Barracks” at 226 Main Street. Elijah Erde is with Amison and Dovey, LLC, the new owners of the property. Erde told Cassgram they are redoing the upstairs apartments as well as the downstairs restaurant and bar. He anticipates being able to put that portion of the building up for rent in about a month, with the apartments available in no more than three months.
Erde said there have been some of the typical issues when dealing with older buildings. He said when work first began there were spots on the main level where a person’s foot would go through the floor. There were two entire floor systems that were torn out before the new flooring could be installed. He mentioned a color scheme has not been finalized for the exterior, and they are also deciding on how to redo the store front. Erde said the next big phase of the project will be the roof, which he thinks had about eight layers. After the roof is completed, the remaining apartment renovations are expected go quickly.
Erde is not a native to the area but has heard some stories about the building and its interesting history. He noted the name of the company, Amison and Dovey, is based on the original owners of the structure. Erde said he has been especially interested in old pictures of the building which are used in deciding how to reshape it during the renovations.
