OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — An old natural gas facility near 129th and Fort will soon be torn down and become a senior-living apartment complex. But neighbors are expressing concerns, not over the complex itself, but safety on an already busy road.

In this area, Fort street runs one lane on both sides. And while Kurt Cook has no problem with the new apartments, he's worried about the entrance and exit coming on to the main road .

"Fort Street is incredibly busy in the morning. It's almost a parking lot eastbound and probably even more likely access to it in the evening rush hour will probably be increasingly problematic," said Cook.

We spoke with the developer, Rob Woodling over the phone who told us he met with neighbors in late December to hear out their concerns.

He says his company, Foundations Development has been working closely with the city to ensure safety amid road construction. Part of the plan is to include a deceleration lane coming from the west and a turn lane from the east.

We're told construction will likely start this coming fall.

Unfortunately when that area was platted 30-40 years ago, the didn't leave any connections to the new neighborhood and the only way out is on to Fort Street. That said, I can't imagine a senior living community adding that much traffic during peak rush hour periods...

I wonder if an entryway could be built on the southern tip of that “CC” plat? Or because that’s not a street, does that not work as it’s another property?

That was originally tried but the seller of that lot was, and then wasn't, interested in selling.

Why has that section of Fort never been worked on to make it wider. They have done east and west of that 2 lane section of Fort.

Also it looks like that entrance would be right on that Fort street hill.

Yeah that would be a rough spot to enter, close to the peak of a steep and narrow hill. It's the way I go to 680. Won't go down it during bad weather. Heavy traffic too.

I do agree a Senior Living Center won't add too much traffic, but not a good place to join onto Fort. Fort is long overdue to be widened west of 120th.

I’m 100% sure it has to do with the cost of adding an additional bridge over the Papio Creek there. Nevertheless it needs to be widened out. It’s about 20 years overdue.
