Construction in Median of I-80 near Gretna?

Post by ChadJK »

Does anyone know what they're doing to the median on I-80 out by Gretna? It looks like they're digging it up, putting down aggregate in the middle,. then filling it back in? Is that a drainage thing or are they prepping it for something?

I thought they were putting those Cable barriers to stop cars from crossing over the median on to oncoming traffic?

Yeah, that's what they've been installing on the Omaha side of the Platte for a while now - the cable barrier.

Correct on the cable barriers. They put down a rock base a few feet wide to be able to keep it from becoming overgrown with vegetation and still do the required mowing on the rest.
For the record  NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER    !!!!!!!

On the plus side, someone falling asleep at the wheel won't result in them crossing the median into oncoming traffic. On the downside, when there's a bad wreck and I-80 is at a complete standstill I can't just off-road it over the median to head back where I came from. :)

These are a great idea when they are maintained properly. I know that IA has had them for years and so many times, once someone hits one, the cable isn't tightened back up for weeks.

There's a YouTube or TikTok guy out there (can't remember which) that goes around inspecting guardrails and pointing out how they're installed incorrectly. If installed properly, they're suppose to absorb some of the energy of the impact. A shocking number of them are installed incorrectly.

@TheGuardrailGuy on most platforms. His daughter was killed when her car was speared by an improperly installed guardrail.
