Government Controlled Weather

Post by stormchaser »

I can't believe I'm even needing to post this but here we are. The dumbing down of our society continues.

The amount of misinformation/complete nonsense online (social media especially) surrounding hurricanes and Government controlled weather as of late, is appalling and shows how little these people understand about the atmosphere/weather and how incredibly complex it can be.

Has the Government in the past researched IF/HOW they could control weather? Yes. Can they seed clouds and create rainfall on a very small scale? Yes. Are there patents for designs that people TRIED to create machines to control the weather in the past? Yes. Does that mean ANY of those actually work?? Absolutely not. Can the government create and steer hurricanes/tornadoes and intentionally cause damage to very specific areas? NO!!!

It's SHOCKING to me how many people actually believe this nonsense and honestly believe without a doubt that the Government not only CAN control the weather, but IS - and they can't be convinced otherwise. JFC, get real people. Do you have any clue how much energy would be required to create a hurricane and then somehow steer it??? Or even a storm/tornado???

If you're one of these people, stop listening to others who have no idea what they're talking about. It's ridiculous, helps nobody, and it needs to stop.

It’s wild to me the lengths people will go to to deny the existence of climate change. If you are more prone to believe wild conspiracy theories than science, you should see a doctor, because your head is clearly shoved incredibly far up your |expletive|

Unfortunately...

Things like this just shows how much our education system is failing us. I fear we are in real trouble because of it. Between increasingly realistic AI video, etc and people's inability to use what SHOULD be common sense and their apparent need to try to turn everything into some whacky conspiracy, it wont take much for things to get very bad very fast.

Yep. The only real question is to what extent is it human caused IMO.

It's hard to believe it's not climate change, and it's hard to believe we're not causing it. Too many numbskulls with smart phones. They were there all along but had no way to reach the masses.

People being naive enough to believe this is even a thing is one thing - the fact that idiots that have government roles and were put their by their constituents is simply asinine. Some, if not all of them, will probably even be re-elected!

I've said it before - could care less about someone's party affiliation, that should really be irrelevant. It should be unbelievable that people like this have these jobs... but here we are. At what point in time to people finally say "Wow, this IS completely insane"? I guess never according to where things currently stand in America.

This thread made me reopen the book "The World in 2050". It came out in 2010 and even it's ideas seem antiquated now. It predicted pretty dire changes in the climate to the point it doesn't sound good to be around in 2050... The thing is even then, the book said things are happening faster than anyone predicted. Fast forward to 2024 and it's all happening quicker with every passing year. I say anybody old enough to read and post here ought to enjoy what we have left. All things considered, I genuinely think this is the very last group of people (born maybe 1990-2005) to live on a relatively habitable planet. The industrial age has been pretty cool but ultimately our civilization's undoing.

Just the other day I watched an episode of How The Universe Works, and it was about that topic. Not that there's no intelligent life out there at the moment, we just can't reach each other within a given period of time. It's just physically impossible to make contact. According to them, and I agree, theres unimaginably low odds that there isn't, or hasn't been thousands or millions of civilizations just like us, or unimaginably more advanced than us on different planets, either now or billions of years in the past. Even within our own galaxy. Then there's trillions of other galaxies.

Anyway, even here on earth, we have examples of past societies that have accomplished amazing feats, but burned themselves out. I think we're just a part of a cycle. I think we reached our peak and a new civilization will follow.

Naive me thought that more extreme weather events would finally persuade people into believing that climate change is real. Unfortunately I didn't account for the massive amount of disinformation, dishonest politicians, and just generally dumb people.

Exactly. But like normal, instead of living in reality, they just come up with an idiotic conspiracy to believe instead. It's literally the adult version of a child playing "I win" where no matter what, they can't be wrong (or "lose") and will just make something up and somehow convince themselves it's true instead. IMO, it's a sign of low intelligence.

People with intelligence KNOW they are wrong at times and are perfectly fine with it. Thats how people learn and continue to grow. It should be what drives us. The first step in learning something new is to admit you don't have all the answers and/or that you were incorrect about something and want to actually expand your knowledge about it. Not just make some nonsense up and/or blindly believe things you see on social media and act as if it's 100% true.

Thats why I won't say without a doubt that climate change is human caused. It "probably" is but I always try to keep my mind open to other possibilities as we continue to learn more and more about it. That and the reality if it IS 100% human caused, we are screwed because there is 0% chance people are going to change at this point IMO (at least not enough to be impactful).

Eh. climate change is definitely real but There is plenty of history of extreme hurricanes/cyclones/tsunamis/earthquakes/etc before the industrial revolution really took off. I'm more of a cycle believer, Maybe humans exacerbate it but I personally don't think there's any real way to stop it.

There’s a theory that our civilization was founded by the survivors of a global cataclysm that nearly wiped us all out.

In my memory, first came email and that was very beneficial. I stayed Japan in 1995 until 1998. The first year, I wrote letters to my parents and friends. Sending messages by email to a friend who could then print them and distribute them was a game changer. Soon after email, the web allowed access to a lot of information, most of it free. I could soon also be able to have video calls with friends and parents. The main issues were downloading music for free from Napster, which hurt the music industry. Then after around 2010, add smartphones and algorithms and AI, and it is hard for society to function.

With how fast communication technologies are advancing, I can understand why you can seem old compared to someone only five years younger than you. :)

It's really quite scary how people are believing so much of the misinformation out there. I tend to rely on actual scientists and smart people. Here's from a meteorologists take on weather manipulation. (Nick Lilja)

"In a world filled with information—both accurate and inaccurate—it’s important to approach natural events, like hurricanes, with facts and science. Hurricanes are large, complex atmospheric systems driven by the laws of physics—thermodynamics, more specifically. They can't be controlled, steered, or manipulated.
Sometimes, things happen without a deeper meaning or nefarious explanation. It’s just the way the universe unfolds—chance, timing, and the laws of physics at play. Just because we haven’t seen something specific happen recently doesn’t mean it can’t happen at all.
I want you to try an experiment to help demonstrate what I mean.
At home tonight, boil a pot of water on the stove. Get it really bubbling, with lots of steam. Now, try anything and everything you can to make that steam spiral consistently in a stable vortex. Use fans, add ingredients to the water, or position objects like soda cans around the pot. Do whatever you think it would take to make that happen.
Unless you move the experiment to a controlled lab and place a gigantic fan above and below the pot, you’ll never be able to do it. And even then, those fans would require so much work that most people would lose interest in trying.
One of the key concepts in thermodynamics (which drives weather) is "entropy." Entropy refers to the general trend of systems moving from order to disorder. A simple example is why your kids' room gets messier and messier each day until you finally say, "Clean it up!" Then, it takes a lot of energy to restore order to that room. Energy is key. If we want to go from disorder to order, it takes work. And work requires energy.
In weather, forming an orderly hurricane takes an immense amount of work—and work, in this case, means heat. A tremendous amount of heat. Like, so much heat. There’s nothing us puny humans can do to change a 300-mile-wide hurricane, made of clouds that are 40,000 feet thick. Do you know how much air that is?
That’s 78,824,318,970,453,922.64 cubic feet.
Seventy-eight quadrillion, eight hundred twenty-four trillion, three hundred eighteen billion, nine hundred seventy million, four hundred fifty-three thousand, nine hundred twenty-two point six four cubic feet.
That’s a lot of cubic feet.
Think back to your experiment. The air above your pot is maybe 6 cubic feet, and the only way to bring any kind of order to that chaos is with large fans in a controlled lab. The open ocean is not a controlled lab, and seventy-eight quadrillion is much bigger than 6.
The universe naturally leans toward disorder. To create order takes a lot of work, and work takes energy—more energy than any human has at their disposal.
So, how much energy are we talking about?
Let’s say we wanted to use solar energy alone to create clouds and an orderly hurricane. If the storm is 300 miles wide, the area it covers is about 183,075,471,457 square meters. The Sun provides about 345 watts per square meter, which means about 62,977,962,181,208 watts are hitting the storm at any given moment.
That’s sixty-two trillion, nine hundred seventy-seven billion, nine hundred sixty-two million, one hundred eighty-one thousand, two hundred eight watts.
That’s a lot of watts. And that’s just from the Sun. We’re not even accounting for all the stored energy in the ocean, which is the first source a hurricane taps into.
Again, that’s far more energy than we could ever hope to control."

Oh just stop. This is the same silly narrative I see on social media constantly. Al Gore didn't say that and regardless, he isn't an authority on climate change. Stop just blindly believing claims being made on social media simply because you want them to be true.

For reference, here is a quick search of just some of the things that have come true from ACTUAL climatologist predictions in the past. Many of the things people who deny climate change like to refer to are complete nonsense and untrue or predictions made by random people (not climatologists) - which who cares what they said??
  • In the 70s, climate models predicted that the Arctic would warm 2-3x faster than the rest of the planet.(Manabe and Wetherald, 1975). Satellite observations show that the Arctic is warming 2-3x faster than the rest of the planet, exactly as models predict (literally thousands of studies).
  • Sea levels are rising every year.
  • Arctic sea ice extent is decreasing every year at a rate which suggests the Arctic ocean will be perennially free of sea ice within 50 years. By 2060, September sea ice extent in the Arctic might be zero at current rates of loss. (You can see this data at the NSIDC website).
Feel free to provide any legit sources that validate your denial. Please include sources from actual climatologists though and ensure they have scientific data to back up the claims.

There's also no denying the increase in intensity of severe weather. The wind storm that hit at the end of July was unlike anything I've ever seen in my life. And there's plenty of studies on this topic.

Alright, you've caught me. It's not a perfect science, but I'm working on it. My ex wife will rue the day she left me and moved to the north side of Elkhorn. Missed her by quarter of a mile.

You can tell theres a difference in our climate here just by sticking your finger in your mouth and poking it in the air. The weather's just been... unreliable. We're hitting new records on different ends of the extremes every year it seems. We're currently in the driest period from September 1st to now, ever. We just had the wettest May, ever. A couple years ago we had the warmest December ever, preceded by the snowiest winter ever. The weather around here just doesn't make sense anymore.

On a global scale, the melting on the polar ice cap is undeniable. More, and warmer water in the ocean is fuel for events like Helene and Milton. Polar sea ice is vanishing at an accelerating rate.

Well, more intense and frequent hurricanes for one..

NYC went 2 years without an inch of snow up until last winter, and even that was not too much. Winters here are now just regularly in the 40s, way warmer than they used to be. I haven't had to bust out a heavy winter jacket in years.

It’s kinda related but actually based on science and proven technology. So I was reading that the NWS in OK has been using Naval AEGIS phase array radars as weather radars which is quite interesting. I see they have a mobile unit and stationary and those radars will be the future radars that the NWS will use. The benefit of them using them apparently they can scan faster and allow more warning time for severe weather instead of a 5 min scan time compared to the Doppler radars right now. I’m just hoping they can deploy them soon. It would be nice to have some more advance warning. Also kinda curious what everyone would rate Omaha for severe weather resilency?

I think our resiliency comes down to people willing to help after severe weather, but I really hope this isn't exclusive to the white population that was mostly affected earlier this year. I'd like to think that if North/South Omaha were directly hit by a tornado that a similar outreach from citizens would be there.

I never personally viewed any damage from the Elkhorn tornado. I can attest to the wind storm/gust front tornado(es) that hit some of the older areas particularly at the end of July, mainly because of mature tree damage. I guess we can say everything is back to normal, flowing correctly. There are still signs of that storm such as parts of trees laying around, houses with tarps on roofs. I wouldn't doubt at all if it's not til next year that some of the places around here can get worked on. Some of the limbs may never get cleaned up. Everybody in my neighborhood pretty much minds their own business. Some take care of their property, some don't. It is what it is.
