I would also add to Brad's thoughts, that the expansion is being done with the intent to have a another hotel partner. That $100M investment could have a 1:1 return in private investment, or more. I have suggested, and the mayor has mentioned, Omni as a potential partner. If you look at some of their recent projects in connection to convention centers, they are very large private investments that sometimes includes more than a hotel. If Omni, or someone like that company, decides to build next to the convention center, I could see that leading to additional development. For instance, if Lot B is the spot, Omni could just be an anchor for development of that whole site. That would be more than $100M in private investment.

Yes, bonds don't necessarily mean higher taxes. Only if the bonds can't be paid off. I think MECA has a great track record of making things happen though, so there is a great chance that the ROI will be much higher than the cost with this one.

I see Lot D going up for development before Lot B. Just a hunch.

On Grow Omaha, Stothert said Lot D would get a garage once lot B develops

They wouldn't garage the whole lot would they? That would be massive.

I'm going to go out on a limb here but is the current mayor of Omaha somehow related to Rod Yates? Always with the "Big things are coming soon!" attitude...followed by years of crickets?

NHL Hockey and US Volleyball in lot B? Along with a Mega Saver?

Actually the current mayor has delivered on a great many of the big thing coming soon. Redone Leahy Mall and riverfront, street car, new Mutual HQ, new main library....

Yes, I think the current mayor has done amazing things. They did announce when this plan came out that it would years into the future. Throw in covid and other things, that certainly didn't help to move it along.

Just a reminder, it’s not specifically called out on the election ballot today but a vote yes for “special city of Omaha election $146,000,000 public facilities bonds” Is a vote for expanding the CHI health center.

Me too, but I'm a little worried. Other than Football and NASCAR, I don't really turn on the TV. Most of my "Shows" are on YouTube. All that to say, I never saw and advertising for it. I got a email from the chamber today saying to vote yes, but that was it.

We have been watching shows on Hulu the last couple months and we would see commercials for the CHI expansion, but it didn't say vote yes to pass the bond, but it gave a website to visit for more information.

I know earlier articles stated that they could possibly begin construction by this fall and have completion by 2027 but wonder if that is still the plan. The article did state that they were going to keep working through the process so there weren't delays.

Omaha voters approve bonds for city projects and CHI Health Center expansion
Hannah McIlree
One of the bonds will contribute 100 million dollars towards the CHI Health Convention Center Expansion,

Meca CEO Roger Dixon says it will give a face-lift to the riverfront side of the building and offer more rental spaces...groundbreaking is expected for early 2025.

A OWH says that construction could start as early as Jan 2025 with completion expected in mid-2027. I’d think that a 3rd convention hotel would look to open the same time.

They did say that MECA had to approve next month before Kiewit can officially do anything but there’s no way they don’t. I wonder if negotiations have already started with prospective hotel brands.

Also some other big news in the OWH article:

The MECA board approved a $6million contract with Daktronics to replace all video boards in the arena including the main scoreboard, ribbon boards and outside marquee on 10th and Capitol!!

So glad to hear this.

Even better, it is to be completed by September!

Assuming the scoreboard will remain basically the same with new panels in it, not a major redesign like last time?

I was wondering. Although technology has changed quite a bit in the past 11-12 years since they last upgraded. I know the university of Iowa couldn’t have a huge board bc of the weight and the ceiling not being able to support it, but now they can.

It would be nice to see one a little bigger than what we have currently. Video is fine but stats are sometimes hard to read. A lot of arenas now have more screens than a whole video board integrated, but who knows. Maybe they will release some renderings/specs soon since it will be completed in about 9 months.

We've had some big announcements from the City/Mayor in the January/February timeframe the last few years. Maybe the hotel partner for the expansion will be announced then, at least I am hoping for that.

Oh I definitely imagine that they're going to announce just about everything they can in the run up to the election. The Civic Site was supposed to be the big thing back in the 2021 race that was announced pretty close to the election, though we obviously saw how that has gone.

Per Grow Omaha, at the latest MECA meeting, Jay Noddle says they have been receiving inquiries from hotel operators (not specifically hotel brands) about the 3rd convention hotel.

Drove by today. One thing I didn't think about but one of the first orders of business is that they are modifying/removing parts of the emergency staircases on the back of the building.
