Decent little dusting this morning. Quite the reality check after a beautiful weekend!

It was crazy on my drive into the office. Completely dry and sunny in Bellevue on my way to Aksarben Village, turn right near Baxter Arena and there was snow on the grass surfaces. Funny thing is there were 3 wrecks in Bellevue, but none in the snowy spots.

May be a messy evening commute in some areas - including potentially Omaha. Snow moving into the area from the northwest over the next few hours.

Special weather statement from the NWS for our area:

Scattered snow showers may develop across much of eastern Nebraska
and western Iowa later this afternoon and persist into the early
overnight hours. There will be the potential for very quick
reductions in visibilities with winds up to 40 mph in the heavier
snow showers. Visibilities under a mile will be possible. Snow
amounts will generally remain under an inch, though could quickly
accumulate and make roads slick for the evening commute. Most will
see little to no snow, but localized amounts of 1-2 inches are
possible. In addition to snow and strong winds, temperatures will
quickly fall well below freezing later this evening, potentially
resulting in flash freezing of roadways that don`t see snow
accumulations initially.

Based on radar, north of Omaha is more likely to see accumulation but the north/northeast side of Omaha “might” also. Probably too warm here for now anyway.

The latest HRRR short range model is concerning for a potential ice storm in parts of the area later today/tomorrow morning.

Some light freezing drizzle/rain should start this afternoon southwest of Omaha and move into our area mid to late afternoon and last throughout the evening/overnight on and off.

However, this run of the HRRR shows an area of heavier freezing rain developing in our area tonight or early tomorrow morning with over a half inch of ice depicted just barely north/northeast of Omaha (the purplish areas on the map). This is obviously extremely concerning IF this happens. It would be enough to cause some major issues.

For reference, this is an animation showing what the 12z HRRR is depicting for precip types with the lighter freezing rain starting this afternoon into overnight and then an area of heavier freezing rain developing and moving through our area late tonight/early tomorrow. If this happens, it'll be interesting and if trends continue, I wouldn't be surprised to see things upgraded to an ice storm warning.

Do not go out for any reason. I thought I could pick up food from a place in my neighborhood and couldn't make it back into my garage. Had to park down the street and walk home. I was sliding all over the place. It was really scary. I slid down hills going less than 1 mph. I'm lucky I was able to keep control enough to not crash into anything.

It seems to me this is the first legit ice storm we’ve had in a while it’s probably been 5 or 6 years. Right it’s best not venture out right now at least the side streets are terrible, not sure about the main roads.

I remember trying to get home in an ice storm after going to a movie at Westroads. Took an hour to get to Benson. After that I resolved, never again. There was no way I was going out tonight.

There was one probably 2-3 years back where my truck was unable to get in my driveway and I slid down the hill when I closed my door after parking on the street in front of my house. I ultimately was able to get into my garage when I switched into 4x4 low. And after that I had to accept not eating that day.

But this time was way worse. I started sliding downhill as soon as I started trying to go uphill. I barely was able to get uphill with 4x4 low. Even if I made it in the driveway I would have slid sideways.

I went to the store back at 6 pm and everything was fine but closer to 7 on the way home I picked up dinner and slid right into the back of a car in the parking lot. Thankful it was only 1 mph but it scratched their bumper a tiny bit. Took me 45 min just to get out of the parking lot bc it was on a slight incline.

I'd have to say this turned out on the worse end of the forecast. I went to the grocery store around 6:30 and my truck was already coated in a thick layer of ice. 4x4 helped, but not much. There are a couple abandoned vehicles on my street now. Not looking forward to the morning commute tomorrow.

One of the kids worked last night at a local restaurant. We didn't let him drive because of the impending ice storm. I went to pick him up around 9:30p and residential streets were a ridiculous sheet of ice. Main roads weren't too bad though. Probably the most notable ice event in recent memory.

I have a 4x4, and like I said, it didn't help much last night, and it REALLY made no difference this morning. It was just a circus show. Usually I go up my hill, but didn't even attempt. Even though I went down the hill, was still slipping and sliding going 5mph. Main roads were fine, getting out of the hood was the bulk of my commute today.

Most of it was melting so as of late morning they were only salting roads by request of Police, Fire, and Citizen complaints.

I had to catch a 6:20 am flight at Eppley Saturday morning. I was luckily able to get out of my neighborhood which was basically an ice covered skating rink. Once I got on West Center and I-80 the roads were drivable, I would say I averaged about 40 mph on the interstate. I was actually somewhat impressed with the road conditions on the main roads, especially I-80. As expected traffic was extremely light. I-80 appeared to be mostly just wet with occasional slick spots the temp was 33 which helped. It took me about 10 minutes longer than normal to get to the airport from SW Omaha. Once I got to Eppley things seemed to be running mostly as normal I didn’t notice any obvious problems. Since my last time at the airport 5 months ago it’s now completely engulfed in major construction, pretty impressive looking I must say.

Nothing says "Christmas" like thunderstorms - right??

Both the long range GFS and ECMWF have been showing "potential" for thunderstorms in our area sometime around Christmas (roughly) - give or take a few days. It's obviously a long ways out and anything this far out is pretty unreliable but based on the overall pattern, it wouldn't shock me anyway - but it also wouldn't shock me if the potential went "poof" too.

The mid to upper 50 degree dewpoints depicted in southeast NE on the ECMWF would be more than enough for thunderstorms and "maybe" enough for some severe weather. Thats of course if it actually happens which odds are low currently.

Dang, I wish I was in that situation...

The best time to Christmas shop for many things is in Jan and Feb when they are clearing out things.

Everything is wrapped when it arrives too. If we are not done before Thanksgiving, it is a total failure. Been that way for at least 15 years

Thought I would add this little tidbit I get a call from my insurance company today and of course the people in the other car stated that they had to go to the emergency room. I hope my insurance company fights that because I can’t imagine the devastation from being hit at 1 mile an hour

In case ya missed it, the winter solstice occurred here at 3:20 am today. Though it'll take a while to add up to anything noticeable, we're on our way back up. Even though I prefer standard time, I still don't like how short the day length is, so this is a positive in my book.

Technically sunsets have been getting later since the 16th because of the earth’s wobble. Sunrises don’t start getting later for another few days yet.

Actually the earliest sunset is on December 7th, although the first day we go up a minute from the bottom is around the 13th or 14th, depending on where you are in the city.

The latest sunrise is on January 4th with us going down a minute from the peak somewhere between the 7th and 9th.

Not completely weather related but it's worth mentioning, the NWS, etc is going to have an increasingly difficult time with distinguishing legit reports and bogus tornado reports due to how legit AI has become with generating realistic looking tornadoes (and the fact people are dumb and need attention so they make bogus reports).

They aren't "perfect" but they are pretty legit looking still and most people would have no clue they aren't real.

These are all AI generated...

Wow, didn't expect to see snow this morning....there was absolutely no mention on any forecast, but here in Bellevue there was a huge burst of snow coming down, only for a short while but the streets have a coating on them, which is more than we have had all season in Bellevue.

Yeah its all completely melted now, but that was definitely more than just flurries. It looked really pretty for a while though and I am working from home, so it was nice to see.
