And to add onto what felt more like an extended fall than winter, November was above average in high and low, and October was almost 10 degrees above average. It felt like it took forever for winter to get here, and when it got here, it GOT here. And it only lasted two weeks, maybe. Now meteorological winter is almost over. Still 3 weeks of astronomical winter left though.

Ha, Ironically enough, I slept the second half of the night with my window cracked because it easily maintained 74 (too warm for me) in here, despite having turned off the heat yesterday... And now there's two Robins chirping at each other outside my window.

Busguy2010 wrote: Mon Feb 24, 2025 6:22 am February definitely sucked. But looks like we're back up to what I was considering a warm winter. I mean, were looking at upper 50s to round out February. Is that not warm for February? We had quite a few above average days in both December and January, with some of those days well above average, and even a record high of 61 that one day in late January. December was above average in both high and low temp and January was above in high temp. It never seemed bad to me because I like it cold, and it didn't snow until a couple weeks ago. It really was only truly bitterly cold for that one week or so, and like I said, look at the upcoming forecast. February is probably gonna bring the whole winter average down, but December and January were both above average.
Actually January 2025 came in 1.3’f below average. As of today February 2025 is more than 10’f below average. It will end up well below average. So only December ended up above historical average temperature this winter.

January highs were .8 degrees above average.

https://www.weather.gov/oax/monthly_climate_records
(You have to change the month to January 2025, link won't direct to January. Don't expect anybody to do so)

I dont want to nitpick about a degree or two swing. Yes, the lows were a tad below average, the highs were a tad above. Essentially, January was not anything but average. So December was warm. The point I was making is that although winter finally did come through, it was very late in the season, and brief at that.

We never experienced a winter with less snow on the ground as late as it was, so theres also that.

I also wouldn't count out the well above average end to February to round out the month quite a bit.

There was a middling heat burst with the SVR Tuesday night, I didn't hear Emily mention it, though: https://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/yesterday.html

Potential winter storm could impact the Omaha area this Tuesday night into Wednesday. “Could” be enough to be impactful and cause travel issues. Going to depend on change over timing to all snow and how warm surface temps are.

Might not end up being a lot of snow (depending on temp) but with 60+ mph winds, it won't take much to cause some serious issues. I'd be surprised if the winter storm watch isn't upgraded to a blizzard watch/warning.

Also some severe weather and even tornado threat tomorrow afternoon - especially from Grand Island/Hastings over to Lincoln and Nebraska City on south. IMO, the highest tornado threat is currently between Grand Island/Hastings and Lincoln south to the KS border where I believe there is a decently high threat for cold core tornadoes (typically brief tornadoes) - though with the amount of precip in the area, they may be impossible to see.

If we get enough snow, the morning commute on Wednesday will be impacted from blowing snow (with ~65-70 mph wind gusts). But that all depends on how much snow we actually get and very difficult to know because it comes down to a bunch of factors like precip change over time, how warm surface temps are as the snow falls, etc...

My gut is leaning towards 3"-5" of snow in Omaha but this is definitely one of those "boom or bust" systems where we could get hammered by a blizzard - or basically get nothing aside from wind and a little snow.

It’ll be interesting to see if we get thunder snow tomorrow night. This is the type of system that could so I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see a few flashes and hear some rumbles with the snow.

I'd be ok with that tbh - still looking like 3 to 5 inches of snow in Omaha itself (IMO). The most likely time frame for thundersnow (which is fairly likely IMO), will be this evening shortly after when precip changes from rain to snow - probably sometime between 7 PM and 8 PM with a chance for some thundersnow in the area until around 9 or 10 PM.

These quick storms can be tricky to predict. Not to long ago they were talking about a storm like this and we didn’t get more than a trace of snow. This could go either way, it could be bad or not much. Have to wait and see. It looks like the biggest threat could be widespread power outages. Especially since a lot of trees and branches are still dangling or weakened from the July 31st storm.

Yep - it will all come down to timing and temperature. If the temperature hangs around freezing for longer than expected, the snow will struggle to accumulate. IMO, these are always the most difficult storms to forecast.

Based on model trends anyway, this is trending towards the heavier end of the snow totals in Omaha. Unless things QUICKLY change (which is always possible), this is going to be a full fledged blizzard in Omaha tonight and early tomorrow.

Unfortunately given the fact the snow will be heavy/wet stuff with the 65-70mph wind gusts and with damage still in trees throughout the metro from last year's wind storm, wide spread power outages will definitely be possible and probably fairly likely at this point.

Long story short, travel will likely become impossible tonight in much of the area.

Lighter, fluffier snow is more blinding with wind, but can you discuss how the wet/heavy snow will damage trees specifically? Is this because it will stick to the trees and the wind will add more stress to the weighed down branches?

Yes sir - you’re correct. The snow is heavy and will stick to things. The combined weight and strong wind will cause branches and power lines to snap….

Our power has gone out about 3 to 4 times already in Bellevue. Which is weird because all of our lines are buried in our neighborhood thankfully, each time it’s come back on within a minute or two

Must be power lines leading into your area somewhere that aren’t buried - or I’d guess anyway. Crossing my fingers we don’t lose it here in Millard….

There was some prescribed tree work being done in my neighborhood. I'd guess it had been months in the making, but they just wrapped up the other day, just in time. I think given the amount they removed around lines, it could easily be the reason I haven't lost power. Their timing ended up being incredibly coincidental.

That sucks - we have OPPD trucks in our neighborhood so I’m assuming some near me lost power but thankfully we didn’t.

I’d say somewhere around 3-4 inches of snow at my house in Millard but obviously tough to measure without melting it down.

Regardless, I’m not bothering to shovel aside from steps. This will all melt in a couple days anyhow with highs into the 70s early next week.

Like you said, hard to measure but I think we only got 1-2” in Bellevue. Our power finally came back on around 6:30 this morning. Thankfully the fireplace kept the house warm last night and also thankful it wasn’t 20 below like a few weeks ago.

Not sure how you measure this snow. We have bare grass right next to a hip high drift... Officially 3.7 at Eppley.
