People who support McDonnell still think of Omaha as a small city that shouldn't grow. Or they went to catholic school with him.

Is really only watch KETV. In the span of just about an hour, McDonnell's ad showed at least 8 times.....one commercial break resulted in the same ad twice.
What is generally the history of ads? Does one running many more ads show a sign of desperation to get more votes?

Re: 2025 Omaha Mayoral election
The only thing it really tells us is that his campaign has the resources to buy all of the ads. For a mayoral election like this where turnout will be low, your main target would be older voters who consistently turnout at higher rates, and thus, TV is your biggest market. There’s not been a lot of polling except for one published by the McDonnell campaign that showed him at 37%, Stothert at 34%, and 28% undecided. It didn’t seem to ask about other candidates, so McDonnell’s numbers may be higher as the only non-Stothert option, and he could just be also trying to flood the zone so he gets a top two spot to go to the general campaign.swinquest wrote: Tue Mar 25, 2025 6:46 pm Is really only watch KETV. Re: 2025 Omaha Mayoral election
That is a good point about low turnout. It is looking like McDonnell and Stothert will win the primary. Will enough liberal leaning people bother to show up for the general election to support Stothert if that is the case?Garrett wrote: Tue Mar 25, 2025 7:05 pmThe only thing it really tells us is that his campaign has the resources to buy all of the ads. I mentioned it in the streetcar thread. She obviously isn't the ideal candidate for the more liberal folks in town, but she clearly has a much stronger vision for the core of Omaha than McDonnell.
The thing is I am sure some people are getting burned out voting for candidates they aren't too enthused with, but I really hope she wins and we can see some of these big projects/public works investments to the finish line. Then we can get a fresh slate next go around.

I think we've had the part-time mayor in office long enough.
Even if this BS was true, she gets more done "part-time" than the other candidates would full-time.

That's 84 days over 12 months ... just under 25% of the year.KETV wrote: But after examining the mayor’s records, KETV found that Mayor Stothert spent 84 days away from Omaha since late July 2021.
In the days she was absent, the mayor missed the fire that burned the Nox Crete chemical plant; an ordinance on a city health director; the December derecho that ripped across the midwest; a state attorney general investigation finding 43 clergy members from Omaha possibly abused victims in the Catholic church; and a flash flood that washed out cars in the Old Market last August.

Let's make sure to report the whole story. To get the 84 days, 25 were on weekends and 5 were holidays. That leaves 54 days. What the story doesn't mention is how many of those days she was out of town, that was Omaha business-related. I am sure some were.

Re: 2025 Omaha Mayoral election
An average work week is five days, which includes two weekend days. That would be 104 days off in a year. I work in a place that has federal holidays off and I get my birthday off as well - so I automatically have 118 days off a year....not including accrued vacation or sick time. Would this mean that I am part-time as well??? (sarcastic).
I read through the KETV article where it mentions elected officials does not accrue time off. Heck - the reporter was communicating with the Mayor while she was on vacation----proof that individuals at this level still work while away from the office (kind of an undermining way to get a story from the reporter if you ask me). This is the similar to chief administrative officers for corporations. They don't "earn" the time off because they always have their phones/laptops with them. Yet, they should be allowed to take some time off throughout the course of the year.
I heard that Mike Fahey was out of office more than the current Mayor.
So I don't understand why there is such a huge issue with this.

We’re also talking 2021, when she was taking care of an elderly parent. Most would get FMLA in those cases. It’s not like she was there going to the Arch every day.
Has the situation been the same for 2023, 2024, and 2025? My understanding is “no”.

Crazy how a bad candidate turned some of the mayor's critics into staunch defenders. I am among those. I fear what McConnell could do for the momentum across the city, not just the urban core. While I have posted my fair share of critiques of Mayor Stothert over the years, I want a lot of these things she's started get finished and expanded on. McConnell is wanting to impede things like the streetcar just cuz', so I am with many of you here; Stothert needs to win again.

I'm sure McDonnald will be in the office working 27 hours per day, 370 days per year. Maybe he'll even work a little overtime to dismantle things that have been in place for years, like the CHI Health Center and ORBT in addition to the streetcar. Who needs concerts, conventions, and better buses when its better to have the ability to complain that other places have these things and we don't.HskrFanMike wrote: Wed Mar 26, 2025 7:20 am84 days is the equivalent of 12 seven-day weeks.nebugeater wrote: Wed Mar 26, 2025 6:14 am Let's make sure to report the whole story. There was an archival website, Heritage Trolley, that had articles keeping track of streetcar proposals going all the way back to 1996 when Daub first started pushing for one, but it appears to be down. Anyway, as I recall, Fahey wanted a circulator route that I believe would have operated up 10th, across on Cuming, down 24th, and then completing the loop on Farnam. The Streetcar thread goes all the way back to 2004, so you can see the history of it develop there.nebport5 wrote: Wed Mar 26, 2025 3:18 pmReally? Are we confusing him with Suttle? I vaguely recall this. Was his circulator route a bus made to look like a streetcar(a la Ollie The Trolley)? I don’t recall while he was in office taking him seriously as a proponent for getting tracks in the ground.Garrett wrote: Wed Mar 26, 2025 4:06 pmThere was an archival website, Heritage Trolley, that had articles keeping track of streetcar proposals going all the way back to 1996 when Daub first started pushing for one, but it appears to be down. FFP did a story on the cost of stopping the streetcar. Shocker: it would cost millions and likely invite lawsuits aplenty.

https://flatwaterfreepress.org/omaha-ma ... d-it-cost/
Meanwhile, McDonnell continues to not confront the consequences of his proposal as he's unable to provide specific figures about what stopping the streetcar would cost the city.Flatwater Free Press wrote:The city has already paid at least $43 million for the project, according to the city. That is money that cannot be recouped if the city pulled the plug on the 3-mile train that would run from midtown to downtown primarily along Farnam and Harney streets.
Contracts signed by the Omaha Streetcar Authority commit the city to paying nearly a hundred million more.
But city officials, in response to questions from Flatwater, said the costs of cancelling the project would be far greater: budget cuts and tax hikes, paused public safety projects, a damaged bond rating, and threats of lawsuits from contractors, developers and bondholders.

Thanks for sharing. I always forget about FFP. I just posted on my social media to help disseminate the information. Hopefully, some people will actually read it, but if not I quoted exactly what you extracted which is the nickel and dime of the situation that Mr. McDonnell ignores, let alone the potential future investment the streetcar will bring to the city.almighty_tuna wrote: Thu Mar 27, 2025 10:39 am FFP did a story on the cost of stopping the streetcar. As I recall (and my numbers may be fuzzy after 20+ years), but the high-rise Marriott was going to cost more than 50% more than the Hilton proposal...but with only about 30% more rooms than the Hilton. I believe the numbers originally were $94.5 million for the 528 room Marriott and $59 million for the 400 room Hilton. Fahey chose the Hilton, and then negotiated another 50 rooms to take it to 450 rooms for $66 million (IIRC). Then about five years later, they added 150 more rooms to the Hilton to get it to 600 rooms (bigger than the Marriott) and I think it still cost less than the Marriott proposal.NEDodger wrote: Wed Mar 26, 2025 12:42 pmYes. Perhaps harder to quantify, yet substantial, is the amount of convention business lost by not building big enough from the get go to be more competitive.

A local executive explained the streetcar very succinctly to me about 15 years or so ago. Investment in a streetcar pays for itself by reducing the need for parking and street expansion AFTER it's implemented. What are Omaha's biggest parking needs? Schwab Field and the CHI Center.
So duh. The streetcar should connect to the ballpark and the arena. And if your argument is that Schwab FIeld was a mistake and that Omaha should have just freshened up Rosenblatt, well...
(SIde topic: McDonnell/Ewing/Stothert probably will need to start thinking about what the NCAA wants towards the end of this term, which will end in 2029. The CWS contract ends after the 2035 CWS.)

I agree it can be used more than what it is, and a lot of availability once Creighton baseball moves.

They have no plans of moving, they are just building a practice facility.swinquest wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 3:25 pm Isn't the use of the ballpark up to MECA since they own the park?

1. Concerts at the Chuck require an act with a large enough draw to fully utilize the space, and those don’t come around every day. There have been concerts there, such as P!nk in 2023.Linkin5 wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 2:14 pmSorry, but it’s not a tired anecdote at all. 2. I’m sure costs alone would immediately cross this place off the list of possible venues, in comparison to parks where those things tend to be held.
3. Baseball use is likely pretty heavily restricted with Chreighton’s use of the facility as well as the Royal’s control in the region.

Yeah, I’m not saying have solo concerts there every weekend, but they could have done a much better job getting more. The only standalone concert there I can think of was Pink in the fifteen years.EricHaley wrote: Fri Mar 28, 2025 8:22 pm1. They had a music festival in 2010 or 2011 but it was a really weird format over a full week and there was no continuity between the bands. A one or two day format festival over the weekend would work pretty well there.
They could bring in an independent Northern League team like the Lincoln Saltdogs. Saltdogs have no problem scheduling around Nebraska who also plays there. Royals would have no effect on a team like this.
They have had several hockey games in the stadium, it should be a yearly thing with North Dakota or a Minnesota team.

Bemoan the lack of a major secondary tenant all you want, but the CWS is a |expletive| gold mine for the city not just in yearly economic impact (over $100M/yr) but in two weeks of nonstop media exposure. The Chuck is a one of a kind, purpose-built stadium specifically for the CWS, worth every penny and square foot of those city blocks, empty or not.
I sure don't hear this level of whining about Memorial Stadium being used for a handful of events every year.

The Huskers and the Saltdogs season have very little overlap and really only is an issue if the Huskers are hosting a regionalLinkin5 wrote: Sat Mar 29, 2025 10:22 amYeah, I’m not saying have solo concerts there every weekend, but they could have done a much better job getting more. Exactly. Which is why I don’t understand why Eric mentioned it as a hurdle for an independent team at TD. Additionally, when Royals/stormchasers/Golden Spikes shared Rosenblatt with the CWS they were able to schedule away games during that time.nebugeater wrote: Sat Mar 29, 2025 12:32 pmThe Huskers and the Saltdogs season have very little overlap and really only is an issue if the Huskers are hosting a regionalLinkin5 wrote: Sat Mar 29, 2025 10:22 amYeah, I’m not saying have solo concerts there every weekend, but they could have done a much better job getting more. Tuna, I’m glad they built TD and brought the CWS downtown. I’m confused why anyone wouldn’t want the stadium to be utilized more though. If you want north downtown to be more vibrant and spur more development you should be cheering for the stadium to have more events outside of the CWS.
Is Memorial Stadium a fair comparison? It is on campus and isn’t controlled by a city entity like MECA. With that said, I do wish they utilized it more for concerts, etc, which I think we actually will see here as universities look for new revenue sources with NIL.

THe few concerts are Memorial stadium have all been covered withhow difficult it is to do there because the evolved dsisgn. It is impossible to get larger trucks to the field with all that is needed to set up for a concert.Linkin5 wrote: Sat Mar 29, 2025 12:48 pmExactly. There have only been three or four actual concerts in Memorial Stadium that I can think of
Farm Aid 3 ( I was there)
Larry the Cable Guy ( I was there)
Garth Brooks
You might be able to call the Scooty McMCreey concert a fourth, but all that setup was done for Volleyball day, not for a concert.

Yeah I do recall that as well as selling alcohol being a logistical hurdle. I wonder if they’ll make it possible for larger vehicles to get on the field with the south endzone redo coming up. Anyway, yeah it’s hard but doable, and the amount they’re paying players is only going to go up from the $20 million they’ll pay now. Might as well get some new revenue streams.
