Omaha adds second pro volleyball team — and two former Huskers will be on league rosters

Not long ago, Omaha had no professional volleyball teams.

Now the city will have two.

League One Volleyball (LOVB), which bills itself as America’s first professional full-season volleyball league, announced Wednesday that Omaha will be the fifth team member. That comes months after the Pro Volleyball Federation (PVF) added Omaha to its six-team league.

Katlyn Gao, co-founder and CEO of LOVB, said the city is big enough to support both teams.

“We’re not looking for people to choose,” she said. “It’s already a massive sport and I think the more attention on it, the more it will grow.”

Omaha would be the fifth LOVB team. Others are located in Houston, Salt Lake City, Atlanta and Madison (Wisconsin).

Per the article, the Pro Volleyball Federation starts their inaugural season in February. This league will have theirs in November 2024. Will be interesting if both these teams are in town, if we can support both. Current location is not determined for the LOVB team. Atlanta and Omaha are the two cities with teams in both leagues; we are an NY, Chicago, or LA of pro volleyball!

Larson is joining League One Volleyball’s pro league as a Founding Athlete and anchor for the Omaha team. “I’m just loving the momentum there is around women’s volleyball, especially in the States and just worldwide,” Larson told 6 Sports. “I really fell in love with LOVB’s mission statement and what they’re striving to do.” LOVB is pronounced “LOVE”. LOVB is a volleyball community that begins at the youth level and reaches all the way to the pro level.

Nationally I don't see how two new women's pro volleyball teams work. Locally I don't see how it works either.

Sounds like they’ll play at both Ralston Arena and Baxter Arena.

It also looks like their season schedule changed. If you look at the first post in this thread it references a November start to the season, now it appears to be January. They will now be seemingly competing with the Supernovas even more directly.

I completely agree. I really wish it was just one league. Seems like having 2 start up leagues will cannibalize each other. I think they overlap in other cities too.

It's an interesting situation where the new league (LOVB) has attracted most of the top players from the US and has a very beneficial tv contract with ESPN, while the old league (Volleyball Federation) is a more traditional league with twice as many home matches and teams picking their own rosters. I like the structure of the Volleyball Federation much better as it feels like a real professional league. However, it seems to me that LOVB has the better chance of surviving.

I also wonder if they get a little lost in the shuffle being the second entrant into the market and only playing a handful of home games.

It does seem like the Supernovas went after more locally recognized players possibly in response? The diehard fans I know of volleyball have already renewed or bought season tickets for the novas season 2.

I wonder how the ticket prices will compare? Both for season tickets and single game. Will be interesting to watch.

Single match tickets are available beginning today for LOVB Omaha with the code LOVB4LIFE. Seems like the lowest ticket prices on the ends is $31 plus fees. Earlier, I accidentally purchased tickets for a match in another city. Those tickets were cheaper.

LOVB also operates junior club volleyball leagues across the US. Club fees paid by these junior club players' parents will also help fund the LOVB pro league. Regarding salaries, I've heard that the few top players make more than the top players at the Volleyball Federation, but the other players will make less than the other players at Volleyball Federation.

LOVB Omaha won their season opener in Houston! Both our pro teams won on the same night!

For the first time, we went to a LOVB Omaha match this evening because I wanted to see how the experience compares to Supernovas matches. On the way to the arena, we discussed how it is interesting that the team with the national team players play in a much smaller arena so I expected a full arena especially since it was their last home match of the season. However, the arena was about half full, so after set 2 we moved to the first row near center court from our cheaper corner-end seats. We both agreed that compared to LOVB Omaha, the Supernova matches are much more intense even with the much larger crowd. Maybe it's because LOVB Omaha has lost so many matches, but the fans at the Supernovas matches are more focused on the match and the players celebrate more on the court.

Finally, I assumed that LOVB Omaha would handily defeat the Supernovas. However, after watching LOVB in person, I no longer feel that way. The players on LOVB Omaha have more experience and generally more talent, but the Supernovas do seem more motivated and in sync as a team. Both teams have elite back-row defense.

I know it is after the fact, but LOVB Nebraska played Madison on ESPN2 yesterday. I stumbled upon it and watched some. It was quality VB
