Looks like they doubled down on the Trader Joe’s at civic square rumor in the latest campus update saying they’re trying to make it happen, so maybe something is in the works? Also mentioned that a new Library on campus is going to be next.

With most colleges either stagnant or shrinking in enrollment, I’m relatively confident that the era of packed in dorms is over.

Creighton breaks ground on new baseball practice field

The new baseball field — near Florence Boulevard and Cuming Street — will be completed by June 2026. In addition to being the home base for Creighton baseball practice, the all-turf field will serve as the principal location for teams preparing to compete in the NCAA Men’s College World Series. The 193,000-square-foot field’s design mimics that of Charles Schwab Field Omaha a few blocks east, to better orient visiting teams preparing to compete in the Greatest Show on Dirt.

Correct, the one on the left. Home plate is on the corner of Florence Blvd and Cuming and the filed will face southeast. They want it to Match Charles Schwab Field as close as possible so teams can get the fell of it.

So here is a rendering inside the ballpark looking basically straight north. You can see they do have a few seats in there too.

I kinda wish they would as well. Clearly Schwab is too big for them.

This should be the home of Creighton baseball. period. They can play Nebraska once a year at Schwab and have 3-4 other games where they feel like they are going to sell a lot of tickets against a national opponent at Schwab. They can, and certainly should do an in season tournament at Schwab with some national opponents and add local flavor with Nebraska and UNO, but on campus baseball should be the goal. This looks too nice to be just a practice facility. And, certainly their early season cold weather games would be fine. Add fixed seats dugout to dugout and call it good.

UNO baseball has proven that I'd much rather have 500-1k people actually invested in the game than even getting 3k in a 25k mausoleum especially when you have to give away tickets to get to that number. I've seen reports that Creighton has averaged around 2k a game in recent years....but, that's with a decent sized crowd for Nebraska once or twice a year. I've also been to games against UNO where they announced 6k, but had 5k school kids there right before school let out in early May. So, their numbers are definitely padded.

They tend to announce an average attendance on the year of something like 2k to 2500 if memory serves. That's what I've seen in the past. But, that includes 1-2 games vs. nebraska that are maybe 3-5k (nowhere near what that game used to draw) and often have a game against someone like UNO or someone else mid week where they give away a ton of tickets to school kids and announce 6k. So, I'd have no doubt their typical sold tickets are 500-1500 on most days. Like I said, have maybe 3-5 games a year at Schwab, and have the rest on campus. That makes way more sense.

The only reason I think playing at TD makes sense is because historically, those fields were multi-purpose for intermurals... Not sure where they're planning on doing that since the fields don't look too friendly for flag football or ultimate frisbee, but that probably is a campus consideration?

That's my thought as well. Looking at overhead photos of the old complex, looks like they had lines painted for the various sports, though. I can't imagine they'd want to paint lines down in the center of their campus?

Looks like that space will be grass, too. So I wonder how protective of it they'll be.

Who knows. Smarter people than I make these decisions.

Fly Together is a nearly $300 million investment in Creighton athletics and recreation through new and upgraded facilities across 17th Street from the rising Builder's District and Kiewit Corporation's headquarters. Entirely donor-funded, Fly Together launches with a $100 million gift from the Heider Family Foundation, the largest gift in Creighton's history.

This is mind-blowing to me. When I graduated 25 years ago, McGloin was under construction and was (more or less) the furthest east that campus stretched, at least for most undergrads. Now there's going to be (basically) uninterrupted new development from there all the way to the river. It's an entirely different place.

It was hard for me in reading the announcement to understand what they are doing or building.

What I saw
1. Rasmussen Center remodel
2. Some sort of training facility for athletes
3. Training table for athletes
4. Lot of paths and new green space
5. Non Creighton 12 story hotel, apartments and retail

What I wonder
1. New Brandies cafeteria for students?
2. Are they replacing the Keiwit Center and if yes what happens to it?

I don't see anything in those renderings even close to 12 floors, maybe the renderings are outdated, but it appears the tallest is maybe 8-9 stories in the rendering.
