Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
I don't believe so, the BP locations bought by Casey's became Casey's and the rest became Speedway. As far as I can recall, the Shell stations were always that way. For example, the Shell just south of Baker's @ 120th & Center.

Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
The Speedmart in Gretna just completed the transition from Shell to Amoco. along Hwy 6, somewhat across from Casey's and Fairway. This is the location where, a few years ago, the 60 million lottery ticket was sold.
For the record NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER !!!!!!!

Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
The Speedmart in Council Bluffs went to Amoco quite a long time ago. Around the same time that Anderson's went to Amoco.
The switch to Amoco is just a marketing scheme, correct? It still the same international company trying to get a better market share in the US?

Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
That's what I am wondering. Trenton was touting it for a while when the Anderson's switched from BP to Amoco. Talked about the gasoline. I always wanted to ask, does BP have a different blend than Amoco or is it just a change in name only?Brad wrote: Mon Jun 02, 2025 12:02 pm The Speedmart in Council Bluffs went to Amoco quite a long time ago. The only difference is any additive they put in. They all come from the same distribution pipeline and tanks and are only separated by octane grade

Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
Anderson Convenience Markets (which were BP's) have also switched to Amoco. Though, unlike Shell, Amoco and BP are the same parent company.
IIRC, the brand of gas pays for the pumps, awnings, and signage. In return, the owner signs a 20 year (or whatever) contract with them to sell only their gas. That's why when you're at some dive gas station with dilapidated pumps and you're thinking to yourself, "When are they going to replace these pieces of cr@p?" Well, they're waiting for their contract to expire so they can sign a new one and get the new brand to replace all of their stuff. They're certainly not going to spend their money on it if they don't have to.

So does BP and Amoco have a different additive since they are the same company? I get that Shell would.nebugeater wrote: Mon Jun 02, 2025 12:20 pm The only difference is any additive they put in. They all come from the same distribution pipeline and tanks and are only separated by octane grade

Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
My understanding is that Amoco was brought back due to its name recognition.
So people buy gas because of the brand? I’ve always determined what gas to buy by a combination of price and convenience. On some occasions the condition or amenities of the gas station plays in, like if they have a nice car wash. Almost never do I care what brand it is.

Yep. Same as AM/PM on the West Coast, and Aral in Europe.Greg S wrote: Mon Jun 02, 2025 1:04 pmSo does BP and Amoco have a different additive since they are the same company?nebugeater wrote: Mon Jun 02, 2025 12:20 pm The only difference is any additive they put in. Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
I rode with gas tanker drivers in DFW back in the early 80s. The tanker would first go to the ethanol tank farm and load 10% of its capacity, then cross the highway to the gas terminal to fill up the rest.nebugeater wrote: Mon Jun 02, 2025 12:20 pm The only difference is any additive they put in. At the gas terminal were rows of barrels full of additives, one for Vickers, Diamond Shamrock (who owned the tank farm), Shell, Gulf, Texaco, etc. That was the only difference.

Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
Huh, I guess I never noticed/never considered it. Well, I do remember when Bucky's were bought by Casey's. Some were BP, some were Shell. Some of the Bucky's became SpeedeeMart, and I think at least in my roaming around, were all BP. It all goes over my head. I just avoid MegaSaver at all costs, and usually don't do the little gas stations a whole lot, but when in Rome, I will.

Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
Before Casey's bought Bucky's, some were BP, some were Shell. Interestingly, im 98% sure this is all correct: the Bucky's on 84th & Papillion Creek was a BP and became a Casey's, the Bucky's at 72nd & Grover was a Shell and became a Casey's, the Bucky's at 60th & Center was a BP and became a SpeedeeMart, the Bucky's at 77th & Dodge was Shell and became a Casey's, and the Bucky's in Benson was a BP and became a Casey's. So a pretty mixed bag as I see it.EricHaley wrote: Mon Jun 02, 2025 9:39 amI don't believe so, the BP locations bought by Casey's became Casey's and the rest became Speedway. Sounds like all it comes down to is who wins the contract for the station?

Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
The Bucky's stations that stayed BP or Shell did so because of an antitrust settlement--Casey's is the 800 lb. gorilla and they weren't allowed to become a 1200 lb. one.
As for why Shell's been decimated: Either Shell wanted more of a royalty out of the current owners, or BP/Amoco was willing to settle for a smaller royalty and were willing to pay to remodel the stations.

Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
When Casey's bought out Buchanan's Bucky's stations, Casey's converted some to full Casey's and other's became "Good Stop", which allowed them to not turn every store into a pizzeria. (Though the one at 132nd & Maple just switched from Good Stop to a full Casey's.)
Buchanan's service stations at 50th & Dodge and 80th & Dodge remained Buchanan's.
As for the resurrection of the Amoco brand, BP relaunched Amoco in certain markets after acquisitions to avoid having to rebrand stations as BP across the street from an existing BP. I think they've since found the Amoco brand to have a better reputation (less Deepwater Horizon-ish), so many local chains (I.e. Anderson) have swapped the green and gold for red and blue.

When I drove by over Memorial Day, the Anderson BP at I-80 and NE-50 was still BP. And the Anderson 66 across the highway was still a 66.

Every time I see BP I automatically think "B!tch, Please". Been that way ever since Deepwater Horizon.HskrFanMike wrote: Mon Jun 09, 2025 10:49 pm When Casey's bought out Buchanan's Bucky's stations, Casey's converted some to full Casey's and other's became "Good Stop", which allowed them to not turn every store into a pizzeria. Re: Shell - Amoco Gas Stations
And as if on cue, Shell's rumored to be acquiring BP. This has been off and on since before Deepwater Horizon. British regulators so far have a dim view of the deal.
