Nebraska's Most Unique Place

We recently visited northwest Nebraska to re-visit a place that I think is the most unique in the state. It's also a great place for hiking. (Toadstool Geologic Park)

A couple maybe not unique, but attributable places close to my wheelhouse are Hummel Park and Merritt Reservoir.

Hummel Park doesn't scream what most people think of Nebraska. Very wooded, steep cliffs, and a creepy history.

On the other side of the state, just serene silence, clear night skies, beautiful scenes of the galaxy, unique remote peacefulness.

Do a little research on it first so you get the spooky vibe. Its better in the fall though. The back story of paranormal activity is interesting. I don't buy into that at all, but it kind of does put that bug in the back of your mind. A couple times I stayed past dark and felt inclined to challenge myself to walk the familiar trails in pitch darkness just to see how it felt. It was tough, to suppress, kinda like that feeling when you feel like somebody's watching you or chasing you up the stairs. Also as a kid we used to go on field trips there often, and somewhere along Pershing drive, there was a sort of formation on the cliff there that looked like two eyes. They were well known as the devils eyes.

But, no it's not haunted. I've been there probably a thousand times, and seen nothing but a few weirdos here and there. They even have a day camp there, horse trails, grills, covered picnics, a disc golf course, so its safe. The back story is just interesting, so that makes it unique, and also the terrain that isnt typically associated with people not from here. Close to home too.

That's a very good idea, make for a good video. I don't know that the devils eyes are still there, as those cliffs erode easily, im not sure exactly where along the way they are, and that was over 20 years ago, but it was a fun little legend we had as kids.

But otherwise, if you can find it on a good day, such as a cooler, perhaps foggy or misty day, its a nice place to pick up some twigs and fallen small branches and just sit around a fire by one of the many grills, and listen to the leaves and the wildlife, such as the owls, and just take in the ambiance. It is a little spooky.
