Millard Activity Center (204th & Q Street)

Post by locoluke »

Millard announced they’re building new activities center in an email to parents and staff today:

“Millard Public Schools Foundation, in partnership with Millard Public Schools, is proud to announce the groundbreaking of the Millard Activity Center — a bold and visionary project designed to ignite opportunity, inspire excellence, and serve as a cornerstone for the entire Millard community.

“Situated on 40 acres just west of 204th and Q Street, this 85,000-square-foot campus will be one of the largest community-focused projects in the Foundation’s history — and the most transformative. Construction begins this summer and is expected to be completed by fall 2026.
Activity Center

“The facility is being designed by Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture and BCDM Architects, and constructed by Sampson Construction — trusted partners committed to creating a space that is both innovative and lasting.

“The project is being made possible entirely through private funding and generous donor support without the use of tax dollars.

“‘There are so many unique aspects of Millard that make it a special place to call home. We have great schools, terrific families, and a strong partnership with the Millard Public Schools Foundation. Through their hard work and the generous donors in our community, we will have a new state-of-the-art facility that is like none other in our area. As soon as people walk through the door, they will realize how special this facility is, and the incredible value it will provide to our young people and families in our community. We are thankful to the Foundation and everyone who has come together to make this possible,’ said Dr. John Schwartz, Superintendent of Millard Public Schools.

“Inside this dynamic center, students and families will experience:
• 54,000 square feet of hardwood court space for basketball and volleyball (six full-size courts).
• A custom-designed Innovation lab for hands-on exploration in robotics, coding, and invention.
• A state-of-the-art esports lounge for competitive gaming and digital skill-building.
• Multipurpose classrooms to host enrichment clubs and summer programs.
• A sports performance training gym built to improve skills, enhance confidence, and foster leadership.
• An indoor synthetic turf area — nearly 5,000 square feet — for year-round athletic development.
• An outdoor adventure course that supports physical challenge and resilience.
• A scenic cross-country course winding through nearly 40 acres of natural space.

“‘This is more than a facility — it’s a promise to transform tomorrow, one connection, one idea, one victory at a time,’ said Carlos Castillo, Chief Executive Officer of Millard Public Schools Foundation. ‘Every inch of this space was thoughtfully designed. With over 40 years of trusted partnership between Millard Public Schools and the Foundation, this is a natural next step — a shared investment in our future.’

“Millard Public Schools Foundation has selected SportsMan Solutions to lead Pre-Operational Setup and Sponsorship efforts for the Millard Activity Center. SportsMan’s work in securing local and regional tenants is projected to drive more than 400,000 annual visitors, from sports teams and summer campers to families, educators, and alumni.

“‘Title Naming Rights and Sponsorships will play an important role at this facility. We are thrilled to be able to share the Foundation's story and become an extension of all this incredible momentum heading into groundbreaking,’ said Ryan Patrick, Vice President of SportsMan Solutions.

Speaking as a Millard parent living in Green Meadows on the northeast edge of the Millard Public Schools at 137th and Blondo, couldn't they have found a location more centrally located in the Millard district? Come on...Gretna's closer to this than we are!

I'm not sure I'd define an area by its school district. Papillion, for example, has an elementary school near 25th & 370 (Golden Hills Elementary School). Omaha has a high school at 42nd & Giles (Bryan High School). So, does that mean Bellevue stops at 25th street and Omaha extends down to Giles? I also don't subscribe to the idea that everything in Douglas County that is west of 108th and south of Center is generically "Millard." Most of it is either southwest Omaha or simply unannexed Douglas County. What is Millard? Whatever its city limits were when it was annexed by Omaha in 1971.

They literally couldn't have found a spot that is more off-center from the rest of the district (marked by the red X). I understand how it could be difficult to find a 40 acre plot of land in the middle of the district, but it's like they aren't even trying.

Semantics of Millard or not, you're unlikely to find a contiguous 40 acre plot closer to central Millard anyway. Looks like a cool facility to have in town.

Saying that it's "in town" might be pushing things a bit.

I don’t disagree with the complaints about it being too far west, but, for what it’s worth, it’s being built adjacent to Horizon High School on land that Millard already owns.

How about we just decide to be happy that private donors are giving their hard earned money to build something that makes our community better?

I'd like to know who sat down at a table to determine the school district boundaries - not only for Millard, but for Gretna, Elkhorn, etc. It's not logical and definitely wasn't drawn up to benefit parents and the residents it affects.

We live one north of 185th & Giles and love the neighborhood we're in and we moved here partly due to the fact that our little parcel is considered Millard Schools. However, you go about 6 blocks west and it changes to Gretna, or even two blocks south, and so forth. They're even opening a new Gretna Middle School about 6 blocks up the road, yet we're not in the district.

It's never made sense to me that the boundaries are so zig-zaggy out here. I imagine there was some logic, perhaps someone tried to divide up the total households available. Either way, it's not smart, IMO. I also have a coworker who lives south of HWY 370 and their kid is getting bussed over to the new middle school this fall, even though Aspen Creek has a relatively new middle school that's closer.

I also recently found out that houses that are near Tiburon golf course near 168th and Cornhusker are considered Springfield schools. Perhaps that's only some of them, but I don't get it.

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to the new facility - it looks amazing.

My understanding is that many of the boundaries were established based on the current property owner's boundaries when the land was rural farmland, and these boundaries were set. It made sense at the time, with little to no population, and one plot of land with one owner would be in one district. Fast forward to being developed, and it makes a mess.

I believe there was some effort 10 - 15 years ago to do some realignment, but it got met with resistance early on and never really got off the ground.

There were definitely some games afoot back in the day in eastern Sarpy County. The military reimburses the public school system for every military kid that attended their schools. It made sense. The military plops down a base. The land is federal. Military families move into on-base housing. Since it is federal land there are no property tax revenues for the local school systems. Meanwhile, hundreds of military brats flood into the local schools. So, the federal government provides something called "impact aid" to the local schools. That can be big money for school districts. That's why you see Papillion-La Vista schools so far east and why Omaha built a high school in Sarpy County. They wanted a taste of that money. Or, at least, that's the spin I heard many years ago. :)

It would be easier (but still impossible) to consolidate the public school districts than to horse trade areas around.

It's about as easy as merging some counties when that's brought up, but that's a whole different topic.
