Bass beer

Anybody have any suggestions for the closest pale ale I can to Bass in a store? It was always my go to at Goldbergs or the Dell and no longer sold locally.

Edit: or if not a pale ale, an IPA similar to the Flagship IPA at Upstream, Something nice and caramelly with a bit of citrus, not overpowering with the hops and bitterness that IMHO many IPAs tend to have.

heck, its not even sold in the US anymore. Pretty crazy for such an old brand, but it is what it is. Flavor-wise, Smithwicks is kindddddd of close. Definitely not the same, but the bitterness profiles are similar enough that you can try to trick yourself.

Isn't Nebraska Brewing's Cardinal pale ale like that?

It’s been years for me also, but American Pale Ales don't taste like English Pale Ales. American Pale’s aren’t as bitter forward, lack the carmel-biscuit notes and have a brighter hop profile. Is Fuller’s ESP still around? That might be a better surrogate.

I used to drink Bass as well years ago, but haven't had it in at least 15 years. Hobgoblin was another one that I liked from the UK, but it seems Wychwood brewery has shut down.

Man, Bass was what we drank on the Solar Car Team at Iowa State in the latter half of the 90s. Until Sam Adams and Boulevard Wheat showed up, that was it for non-shitty beer.

Any ESB is going to be the closest thing you can find. I feel like Pint Nine had one that I might consider close to that.

Bass was popular in the U.S. about 20 years ago. It was a personal favorite. I’d be surprised if Total Wine & More didn’t carry it. Newcastle is similar.

Its not being exported by the brewery or imported by the US. Its not legally available.

I used to always get a Bass at Goldbergs on 50th St. for years! I was there about 3 weeks ago and the closest thing the had now was Nut Brown Ale by Nebraska Brewing Company, although the waiter said Nebraska Brewing company was closing soon. I miss Bass though!

Hmm…two different styles of beer. A nut brown ale as a sub for a pale ale? Bass is less roasted and much more bitter at around 40 IBUs vs NBC's Nut Brown(like Newcastle) is 20 IBUs. So half as bitter. That Corn Coast one sounds legit though.

Its limited time only, but they still had plenty in the tap room last week.
