2025 NFL Season
Got a little pride to swallow seeing Easton Stick playing with the Falcons today. All rivalries aside (Westside vs Creighton Prep), I feel a little bit proud seeing someone who grew up in my back yard getting a crack at the NFL on TV.
With that, the NFL season is upon us. Football season in general. What a wonderful feeling it is.

Re: 2025 NFL Season
I was just browsing youtube as I drift away. And surely, the usual Tom Brady stuff came up.
So I got to thinking, what is the most "stacked" Super Bowl winning team of all time? Like, which team was assembled for that very purpose? Here for a good time, not for a long time. The most star studded team that got it done.
I'd have to say the 2020 Buccaneers. Not a Bucs fan at all, just a Tom Brady, Patriots, Lions, and Husker Fan.
Bruce Arians, Jason Licht, Todd Bowles, Byron Leftwich, Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Brown, Ndamukong Suh, Lavonte David, Jason Pierre-Paul, Mike Evans, Shaq Barrett, Carlton Davis, Leonard Fournette, LeSean McCoy. I'm sure I missed a couple. I just can't think of another Super Bowl winning team as stacked as that one. So many all time greats on one team.
Any others?

Last year’s Eagles, the amount of talent there goes down as one of the best teams in history. It showed in the throttling of the Chiefs in the SB.

I forgot the season starts tonight.
Eagles & Cowboys. I know there has to be somebody here fired up about it. Quite a notable rivalry, and division matchup to start off the season. Throw 'em in the fire, man!.

Re: 2025 NFL Season
I've got absolutely no skin in the game. If I ever do have skin in a game, I always backlight my TV with the team I want to win. I hadn't done it cause I really didn't care, until that Eagles player spit on Dak Prescott. I immediately turned it blue. Dak is like the golden boy of the league. Just classless by 98, and Im glad he was ejected before even the first snap. And he was laughing about it. What a piece.
Also of note, touch backs are now at the 35, encouraging kickers to kick the ball in the field of play. Interesting small rule tweak to encourage more returns.

Yeah, I've been busy and didn't realize the regular season started Thursday. I don't particularly care for either team, but it was a good reminder to reactivate my YouTube TV & NFL Sunday Ticket subscriptions until February.

An oddball Friday night game between the Chiefs and Chargers tonight.
Don't care at all, just something to watch. Weird. But If I have any allegiance, go Chargers.

Re: 2025 NFL Season
Definitely not rooting for the Chiefs, but that was a very impressive field goal by Harrison Butker, and the team.
Clock running, like 10 seconds left, Chiefs scramble to get the kick off, and just barely beat the clock. Butker hits a 59 harder with zero time to setup.
Also, very weird the game is only on YouTube. I'm guessing it's really an NFL Network production, because there's all the usual faces. Kinda cool to watch a game with just football personalities. People who have played the game, especially Kurt Warner.

Two division games to start the season. All Fn' right!
Chiefs are last in the division now. I mean it facetiously. Technically they are. I'm sure it won't last. Good to see Mahomes put some shoulder into his runs and not just draw the foul.

WOW, crazy how Baltimore managed to lose to Buffalo tonight, 41-40. I tuned out like an hour ago when the Bills were, what I thought, put away.

Mike Tirico summed it up for me. Josh Allen went 16-21 for 251 yards and a touchdown IN ONE QUARTER!!!
I'm a Patriots fan and I can even admire that.

Re: 2025 NFL Season
Just watched the Giants settle for a 25 yard field goal on 4th & 5 for 3 points.
*What if* instead of a field goal being universally worth 3 points, a field goal is worth the amount of yards its kicked? I.e. 0-9 yards is worth nothing, 10-19 yards is worth 1 point, 20-29 is worth 2 points, 30-39 is 3, 40-49 is 4, 50-59 is 5, 60-69 is 6, and 70+ is 7.
To me, thats would add an interesting wrinkle to the game that would encourage more going for it on 4th down within close range, and also reward teams that have a good place kicker.
It would be interesting to see that tried out in a preseason game.

This is an intriguing idea. It would certainly add a lot of interesting strategies to the game.Busguy2010 wrote: Sun Sep 21, 2025 10:15 pm *What if* instead of a field goal being universally worth 3 points, a field goal is worth the amount of yards its kicked? The biggest challenge is that it might distract from the general goal of moving the ball forwards. Consider this scenario:
- 3rd and 15 at the 22 yard line (potential 39 yard field goal → 3 points)
- The best play may be to intentionally go backwards one yard on third down, yielding
- 4th and 16 at the 23 yard line (potential 40 yard field goal → 4 points)

There *could* be a rule added if a ball carrier intentionally lost yards and gives themselves up (a defensive player wouldn't logically go and touch them), that could just be a loss of down from the previous spot. It would be sort of akin to the fake QB slide penalty. Like a "come on man" you can't do that sort of penalty.
Eh, just a thought. I thought a 20 something yard field goal is a chicken |expletive| way to get 3 points, whereas the Lions attempted a NFL record 67 yard field goal. Had the leg, but missed to the side. Thats a really tough field goal, and I dont think a 67 yarder should only net the same points as a 25 yarder.
Maybe only field goals attempted from 33-63 yards should count for 3 and anything over 63 should count for 6. Still would be kinda tough to officiate, but if it carries a loss of down and no yardage penalty, I feel like that would deter exploitation.

Im just about dead
Was rewatching the Lions - Ravens game. Former brick salesman and Lions kicker Jake Bates makes an open field, touchdown saving tackle on the kickoff.
Just about the only funny thing I've ever heard Troy Aikman say was when Jake Bates made that tackle : "I hate to say what he was doing with them bricks on that last play"

Re: 2025 NFL Season
Huh, so Packers - Cowboys ends in a tie.
Dallas had the ball first, got a field goal, and the Packers are down 40-37 with 1 second. They kick a field goal to tie it.
I just thought it was kinda chicken not to go for the win. What good does a tie do them? A tie is still one less win, so at the end of the season, the 15-2 team is still gonna get the better seed over the 14-1-1 team.
I suppose, as a Lions fan, I could understand electing to walk away with a tie if it were a division game, like Packers - Vikings.
But in essence, I guess I don't understand why you play the tie. I noticed the new rules affected OT because Green Bay won the toss and put the ball in Dallas' hands.

Reason I brought it up is because thay seem capable of being a 14 win team. So, I hope the Lions go 15-2 and get the 1 seed over the 14-2-1 Packers. Then at the end of the season it may seem like a coulda woulda shoulda.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Mon Sep 29, 2025 10:26 amI was just shocked there was still 1 second left on the clock. If they took that big of a risk on the 3rd down shot to the end zone, why risk that if youre just going to play the field goal anyway. They very easily could have ran out of clock or got a penalty and lost the game on that play alone.
To me, with the new rules, them electing to kickoff first is a bet to the Cowboys "bet you can't score a TD", and they didn't. So that then took all the pressure off the Packers. That tells me they were okay playing for the tie, and thats lame to me.

There's non competitive games, and there's boring ones, but this not competitive game is not boring. Seahawks are freakin killing it. Nice to see Darnold have a career revival after being drafted (disposed) by the Jets. The throwbacks look so good that should just be the normal jersey. Its also pretty funny it's Seattle-Warshington. With the Commanders wearing home whites, I had a little trouble figuring out where they were playing at first. Either way its clear to see who owns that building.

Yeah to make matters worse, Daniels dislocated his elbow with 7 min to go in the game, down 31 pts. Also Luke McCaffrey, who once played at Nebraska broke his collarbone on the opening kickoff. Not a good night to be a Commanders' fan.

It was actually pretty fun seeing big ol tatted up baby Maxx Crosby getting his butt wiped by the man. I've got no skin in the game, but I love Dak Prescott as a man. And love the Cowboys showing out for their lost teammate.

I'm afraid if the Lions were gonna win a SB in this window, last year and the year before were it, and they blew both.
Luckily I'm a Patriots fan too, and their season has come out of left field after 5 years of misery. They're starting to look like they could go all the way.

The Patriots have had the NFL's 32nd most difficult schedule. They are going to get exposed in the playoffs.

Yep, the Bears are getting on my nerves. Luckily we embarrassed them early in the season, but all the sudden the Bears are 1st, and the Lions are in 3rd, and not looking good at it.
I wasn't aware the Patriots had the easiest schedule. We dont get a lot of their games here, but at least they've been clean to watch.

Even if the Patriots have an easy schedule, they looked good last night and are on the fast track to the 1 seed, and every other team is having an off year, or coming out of down years. It's actually hard to believe how the NFL flipped this year. I am looking forward to the Patriots v Bills rematch in a couple weeks. That will be a good litmus test for Vrabel's squad.
This week also has some really good games in terms of playoff hopes: Lions v Cowboys and Chiefs v Texans. The losers of those games are going to be in serious danger of missing the postseason.

Re: 2025 NFL Season
I agree, the NFC has more, stronger teams. That brings up my dislike for the division format.
I wish, just wish, they would play round robin. Two conferences, every team in each conference plays each other once, and they base the seedings on record. As it stands, it would be 15 game seasons, OR that opens the door for them to add 4 new teams for a 17 game season.
I just hate when a weak division winner gets in over a 2nd or 3rd place team in a stronger division, that has an equal or better record. If round robin, every team still plays their division rival once, that one meeting makes it twice as important.
Doubt it'll ever happen, but it's a dream.

I enjoy the divisions since they help foster rivalries. In fact, I want college football to use the same model. For example, Nebraska and Iowa could share a division, and would play home and away every year.

I like the rivalries too, but I also hate how a division winner gets an auto bid.remline wrote: Thu Dec 04, 2025 9:58 am I enjoy the divisions since they help foster rivalries. Just projecting, since the Lions are 3rd, they're potentially going to be displaced by the Buccaneers. They currently have the same record, and the Lions beat the Bucs. The lions have to win out, while the Bucs just have to win that division thats a mixed bag of not-so-great teams.
Likewise, the Chiefs face the same path, yet they may be displaced by Ravens, who they beat.
The only truly fair way to determine the strength of a team is if they all played eachother, and seed them accordingly by record.
