I totally agree.

All OT in college does is drag on, and actually allows for lucky breaks.

All the rules tell me is that starting at the 25 and two point conversions is an admission that they're amateurs. And they are.

Ties are disappointing for both teams, but that would also encourage getting it done in the game.

I remember CFB before overtime, it was awful. Hard pass on eliminating overtime. I enjoy the CFB OT model but can understand why others don’t.

Nebraska hasn’t won or gained a first down in an OT game since Pelini was coach, an absolutely baffling statistic.

Next game, Akron. That should be an easy win.

What were the main reasons that you disliked the lack of overtime?

I think two important factors that CFB should consider are:
  1. Player health and safety is a perennial problem weighing on American football. Eliminating overtime improves health and safety.
  2. The NFL allows for ties. (Although I would argue that the NFL should also eliminate its overtime period!)

We went to the game in KC. Took 8 people in 2 car loads. It was a blast. Such a moneymaker for KC. We left early Thursday morning and didn't have too much traffic. We did run into other Nebraska fans when we stopped halfway down. We got into KC around 11AM and headed to Harpo's in Westport to have a drink since it was a little early for lunch and to check into our hotel in Overland Park. We met up with some friends who went down Wednesday and were staying downtown. They said there were quite a few Nebraska fans at Power and Light Wednesday night. We saw a bunch in Westport, then again at Joe's Kansas City in Leawood. Our hotel was full of Nebraska fans. We came back Friday but our friends stayed and said larger than usual number of Nebraska fans at the Royals game, which had their annual Husker Night at the K.

Obviously close game. I will definitely take the win. Big thing, it's seems like for the last 10 years or so we always lose this type of game. I was thrilled we won this one. We are not at the point yet to look down on a win because of style points. On to Akron.

I definitely share your sentiment on that one. I couldn't tell ya how much I felt like "here we go again". but it didn't happen like that, so that's a positive. A win is a win :thumb:

Player health and safety is a perennial problem weighing on American football. Eliminating overtime improves health and safety.
My unending sympathies go out to the 18 yr olds signing $2 and $3 million per year NIL contracts.
The NFL allows for ties. (Although I would argue that the NFL should also eliminate its overtime period!)
The NFL also has 32 teams, balanced divisions, clear division winners where each team plays the others home and away every year, a salary caps and minimums, equal access for all teams, anti-trust exemptions, and, you know, cohesive leadership. (Or at least cohesive enough.)

That being said, the NFL's OT rule where a team can win without the other team touching the ball is possibly the dumbest thing in all of sports (except for maybe the actual existence of golf). Either do away with OT in the regular season, or figure that |expletive| out.

College football, jn turn, is an organizational |expletive| show.

Ties in CFB, outside of conference championship games and the CFP, are not that big of a deal anymore. The old non-OT system in college football has to be looked at in the context of the old disjointed bowl system where a national champion was crowned like a beauty queen.

Now, with a playoff and more access, an abbreviated regular season OT system wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But the "play actual football from the 25 and each team gets a go at it" beats the pants off the NFL's dumbfuqery by commitee approach to OT.
Stable genius.

I couldn't disagree more. College OT is a joke. It makes it so easy, its the equivalent of participation trophies.

While in the NFL, they have to earn it by putting together a whole serious azz drive. NFL OT really came into question when the Patriots beat the Chiefs in OT for the AFC Championship back in the 2018 season. But try and tell me the Patriots didn't earn that. It was a feel like temperature of double digit negative, they faced multiple third and 10's, and they still passed. Rex Burkhead, of all people, ran in the game winning touchdown.

And oh, the Chiefs fans were up in arms. "PaTirIcK MaHOMes Didn't eveN gEt two TUch D BawL"

Now, I do agree both teams should be able to tough the ball once, but thats just really kicking the can down the road. Where the problem lies is that its all decided by a coin flip. There should be some sort of competitive incentive involved with who possesses the ball first in OT.

The NFL has since changed that rule. Famously, the 49er's in the Super Bowl seemed unaware.

Mostly. The OT rules still allow for a team to churn up a bunch of clock, leaving the second offense at a massive disadvanage. It is better than it was but still unnecessarily... "complicated".

Just have ties in the regular season, and a simpler, equitable OT in the post season. Why it has to be so dumb is beyond me.

Well, I suppose if you see it that way. But the point is they do everything they can to find the easiest route to find a winner. It waters the game down by forcing unlimited opportunities for a team to get a lucky break or to make a mistake.

A tie does, and should taste bad, so better play good and score in the game where it matters. A tie is one less win, so they do matter at the end of the year. A 10-1-1 team is gonna lose that spot to the 11-1 team. So if a tie is on the table, the score is 28-28, I have the ball on my own 40 yard line with 40 seconds left, I'm doing everything in my power to get into field goal range or score a TD.

But as it is today, F it, I'll take a knee, and get awarded those 35 yards for doing nothing, and I can just kick a field goal if I can't produce an offense.

I have the Cy-Hawk game on in the background cause it was suggested to me when I turned the tube on. There was bit of a controversial call that benefitted Iowa, and I actually was kinda mad about it. And it got me looking into myself, and I'm sure many other people feel this way - Why do I actually want Iowa state to win? The Skers used to play Iowa State every year, but as far as I recall, we didn't hate them, but we hate Iowa.

Maybe its cause we can't beat up Iowa... Ah well anyway, fuk em. I hope the Cyclones win.

Is Iowa State trollin tho.?

I heard it and I watched it about five times and I can't unhear it. I swear the QB's snap count was literally "sh!t, sh!t, sh!t - SH!T". They got it off perfectly, as if it was practiced, and he threw a perfect pass, and the receiver dropped it. I'd be saying the same thing. I'm dying 😂 I'm preeeeeeeety sure that was the snap count.

The Big Ten had 2 shutouts today. Ohio State beat Grambling State 70-0. Penn State beat FIU 34-0. How often does that happen?

Yes, I’m aware that the teams they beat were a couple of nobodies, but still, 2 teams in the same conference with 2 shutout wins in the same day is not something you see everyday.

Maybe. Who knows? Akron did try to kick a field goal just before the half, but it went to the left and hit the goalpost. So they're still scoreless.

Oh man the fans wanted that shutout bad.

The Akron Zips may want to consider changing their name. Can't be good for team morale.

Somebody in my hood even shot off a firework. Hopefully every game is like this :;):

I just watched Oklahoma beat Michigan 24-13. Oklahoma is ranked #18 and Michigan is ranked #15. So after today, Oklahoma will rise in the rankings and Michigan will fall. I guess I'm feeling a little better about playing them in a couple weeks.

I figured they stood a chance of getting beat by Oklahoma.

For the Skers, it'll be their biggest first test, even though Michigan lost. If the Skers can make it a game, I'll be happy. I'm not expecting a win, I've (we've) been through too much lol

If they somehow pull a Houdini and beat Michigan, that paves a road to potential 10-0. I dont think it's gonna happen, but sure hope it does :thumb:

They'll probably hang around there. Both teams play nobodys next week, and Nebraska has received votes. I can almost guarantee they're going to make it a ranked vs ranked match up, whether it's really deserved or not. Skers will probably be 24, Wolverines will probably be 20, if I had to hedge my bet.

But I'm hopeful. If they can get through Michigan, every game after that, in a good year is considered "winnable". You really don't see another strong team until Penn State in the eleventh game.

You know, I'm definitely not expecting it, but I like to keep a 10-0 start, and a top 10 or even top 5 matchup on the table for a meaningful late November game. Would be pretty sweet.

I would say USC has an edge on us as well. But I agree, if we beat Michigan, 10-2 is like a real possibility. Certainly some iffy ones along the way, Minnesota looks good, MSU looks exciting on offense, Iowa still has its normal high level defense but the rest of the schedule is about as favorable as a team can draw.

It feels a little crazy to me, but I just checked ESPN, and they have the Huskers favored in every game, and well favored, in every game but USC, and Penn State.

I mean, sure last Saturday gave me some kool-aid to drink, but I didn't expect to have ESPN so confidently declaring the boys a 10-2 caliber team. Hey, I'll take it if it turns out that well, just surprised.

Michigan is still the betting favorite, 2.5 currently but was 3.5 when it opened I believe. I think they are referring to ESPNs own chance to win.
