I tried to photograph the Lake Manawa show tonight but either I was way to late or they had way more people then normal. The park was packed over an hour before the show. I tried to photograph it from South Omaha but was way off on my setup.

Since there were no fireworks shows tonight, time to archive dig. One of my first fireworks shoots back in July 2007... 18 years ago already! I'm in Council Bluffs, looking towards Omaha with the Harrah's Fireworks Show on the left, locals shooting fireworks on the right.

I heard them, and I stepped outside to find out. "What's the occasion?" Being a graduate, it came back to me, snapped my fingers. "Homecoming". I always loved that tradition to have a fireworks show for it.

That had to have been some kind of technical issue. The weird delays that started forming towards the end were not normal. Also, that company that does dozens of shows around Omaha every single year, and they’ve never not done one without a finale.

City officials say Omaha's New Year's Eve fireworks show was cut short after man 'tripped over a cord' and disabled show

The City of Omaha said the New Year's Eve fireworks spectacular was interrupted by a person who "suddenly emerged from the Missouri River bank."

According to the city, the person emerged from the bank near where the fireworks were being launched. He then entered the firing zone, creating a safety hazard.

The person was told to leave, and according to the city, "he fled, tripping over a cord and disabling the remainder of the fireworks show."

No one was injured during the incident, and the Omaha Police Department is investigating what happened.

Absolutely ridiculous. No clue how it’s all programmed but they can’t plug it back in and reset?

Who pays for the fireworks show? If it’s the city the should be refunded or the show should just be postponed until a later date.

There were difficulties with the Harrah’s show about 20 years ago and it only went on for a few minutes. They apologized and then had a bigger better show the following week. The way the article makes it sound….sorry maybe next year.

Its pre programed and there is a main computer and then I believe each rack has its own firing controller on it that talks to the main computer. They showed me how it worked back in the day, but it was a number of years ago and I don't know all the details.

Its part of the "Holiday Lights Festival", which was run for along time by VGA. Not sure who has it now. I know the city chipped in money and so did a bunch of businesses.

But who's fault is it when a homeless person comes wandering out of the bushes? MECA keeps people back on the park side, but is it OPD's responsibility to keep people away on the city land where they shoot the fireworks?

I know a couple of the guys who where shooting the show tonight. Can't wait to hear their side of the story.

My friends down here in Mexico read about the fireworks fiasco in Omaha, USA and asked me how such a thing could happen. They also asked me why the show was not set to start at Midnight, like apparently every other major fireworks show in the world. I had no good answer.
From what I have read the organizers were idiots, and their lack of security, redundancy of the technical aspects of putting on a show that ought to be pretty much routine after all of these years, and their failure to recover and resume in a rapid manner cost not only their outfit but the city a huge black eye. No doubt everyone who took the time and trouble to go downtown left feeling shafted. It makes Omaha look second or third world. Blaming a “creature from the Black Lagoon” just doesn’t cut the mustard.
Here in PV the show at Midnight went off without a hitch, as it always does.

Back in the late 80's, I was at a Fireworks show at Holmes Lake in Lincoln for the 4th.

The show was shot from the Dam and was supposed to be about 30 minutes long, all set to music broadcast on short-range radio.

About 5 Minutes into the show, it was dry, and the grass on the dam caught fire. The rest of the show all went up in about 3 Minutes. Not what was planned at all, but it did make for an impressive (albeit short) display!

I think planning for a 30 minute firework show is far too long. Most people get bored after 10-15 minutes.
