I just read an online piece citing two Sports Illustrated columnists who predicted that the Penn State head football coaching job would be offered to Matt Rhule.

I don't see PSU going that route; I like Husker football, but at the same time I speak realistically thinking it would be a step backwards for Penn St to make that move.

I see it currently at 50/50.

I ultimately dont care if he were to stay or go. I think he's a good coach, but not irreplaceable. He hasn't proven anything spectacular here, so I don't necessarily see his time here as much of a badge on his resume. If he wants to go, I don’t think the football program will be much better or worse off. Itll be more of a matter of how he want to be perceived. It would be a pretty bad look for him to leave, he's been loved here, stated he loves it here, called it family. So if he were to go to Penn State and falls flat, then what? I think his best option is to stick around, but I get other factors that play into it. And I don't think it would be good on Penn State's part because above. I think he's probably caught between and a hard place, and the best thing is to hold.

At this point in time, I'd be up for it - and they could make a huge spectacle out of it because as far as I can recall, I do not know of two college programs essentially "trading" coaches. I feel like Franklin is more likely to carry a chip on his shoulder and go off the rails on occasion... like Ryan Day or the guy at Indiana... arrogant and believe they are the best thing ever. Personally not a huge fan of that attitude, but maybe they need that in the Husker program.

And they start the second half with a kickoff return touchdown! Wow! Incredible! So now they're up 14-6. Boy, they really needed that.

That wasn't the first Husker game he has attended. I didn't see him this Saturday but did when he was at one 5 or 6 years ago.

We may never know, but what are the chances this was a result of a "tell me why I shouldn't leave for Penn St." conversation...

On ESPN today:
www.espn.com wrote:Targeted searches at PSU and Florida

Coaching circles often have a trickle-down effect, starting with the most appealing jobs, which are Penn State and Florida. What ultimately happens in State College and Gainesville might affect other open searches, as well as those that could come open, such as Florida State and Auburn. Kiffin, for example, will be high on FSU's wish list, as well.

The belief among industry sources is that both the PSU and Florida candidate pools will be limited. If either school is talking to six or seven candidates, something probably isn't right.

Yeah, I don't like to jump the gun on that thought. He previously stated his love for the welcoming nature of the city, state, and university. BUT, if I'm being honest, it did feel like he might have had the door cracked.

Like you said, we'll never know for sure. But now this circles me back to my previous concept that maybe we would have been okay with or without him. Now he has to really prove it. This extension is really the next rung on the ladder. I'd say we're about halfway there, this extension is an establishment of a new floor, which is a positive.

With all this pageantry, all I'm sayin' is they better put together a win.

Can't say the season to this point has inspired a lot of confidence in me, but on the other hand, I have seen a rabbit pulled out of a hat now and then. Its been a while, maybe we're due.

Ain't a poor soul scared of them tho lol. The irony, it burns!

I'm pretty pleased with the extension. It seems like we didn't add much expense for the existing contract years, and we only added two new years.

There are many things outside of Nebraska's control: recruiting base, NIL inflation, brand name recognition, etc. However, coaching continuity is something that we have a fair amount of control over. So even though Rhule hasn't proved a whole lot, we can at least maintain continuity with a coach who appears to have potential at improving the team.

By the way, Nebraska is not going to beat USC, so don't get your hopes up.

Well said. Was thinking the same thing but hadn't put it to words yet and was wondering if someone else saw it the same as me. We didn't really break the bank with this extension and in another year and half we will be exactly where we are right now. The only thing that could change it is if we make the playoffs.

I will speculate that a number of the big $ donors that wanted him to stay were involved with a piece we will never hear about. That would be a commitment to NIL money. He did not receive an increase to his base, but we all heard him say that he needed the resources for players. Probably had some doner commitment to that part

Yeah I think you are spot on there. I think I heard on one of the 1620 shows yesterday that they mentioned there were additional NIL commitments secured. Smart move on Rhule's part. Honestly NIL has made evaluating coaches much harder. If a coach doesn't have the proper NIL funds to keep or add to this roster it can be difficult to compete. I think NIL was a major factor in Gundy's demise at Okie State. Can you imagine if NIL was around while T Boone Pickens was alive? OSU would have been a monster.

I don't have my hopes up 😪 I barely watched any of the last game. At the expense of sounding like a fair weather fan, don't mistake me, I love my Skers, but when they don't put up much of a fight, it isn't exactly a hot ticket to me. Therefore if there's leaves that need raked, laundry and dishes to be done, etc. I'm not gonna set aside 4 hours to watch the game.

It'd be a big difference if they didn't let that Michigan game slip through their fingers, and didn't get embarrassed by *Minnesota*. I had lots of optimism that both teams would be undefeated for this game, and it could be a monumental pivot point. But now it's kinda just, meh. I HOPE they win, but I'm certainly not invested in it.

It would be nice for them to punch up for once. I think I can count on one hand since 2001 that they did that. Probably the biggest win of the century I can remember off hand would be Nebraska 24-3 Michigan State. Both ranked, both 6-1 IIRC. It was a later in season game that had meaning, and nobody, I mean nobody thought the Skers were gonna wipe the field clean.

Something like that would be nice, given the hyped up nature of tomorrow's game.

Completely agree. We are not fair weather fans just because we don't enjoy watching the beloved Huskers lose! I much prefer to follow other interesting aspects of the team; viewing their actual demise is unnecessarily frustrating.

Well, its a tough one. With all the over the top social media intimidation attempts. Nobody in the comment section anywhere is buying it.

Only thing I can grasp at is that USC is coming off a bye after a loss, and statistically they're not exactly world beaters compared to the Huskers.

I just hope for not an embarrassment, given the hype.

The logic in me says USC 35-28.

The Homer in me says Skers 28-27.

Either way I will be satisfied if a touchdown swing. I will turn on all my red lights regardless, as I always do.

Sorry to tell all you husker fans this, but every time Nebraska rolls out with a special alternate uniforms, they |expletive| the bed. So tonight, not only do they have special uniforms, they have also painted the end-zones, they paint the “N” logo, I’m expecting an extra special kind of self-destruction. Not trying to be a Debbie downer but history isn’t on your side Husker fan.

Those unis actually look a lot cleaner than I thought they would. At 7-3, so far they haven't |expletive| the bed yet. I had feared the game would have gotten away from them by now, but they really need to get control of that run game, or it will get out of hand soon.

So far from what I've seen, they seem to be keeping it together on the crucial plays. They've let a lot of runs go, but on 3rd down they've held pretty good. I can't argue with that, and call me surprised they're up 14-6. Still holding my breath though.

Ugh... I guess it was an admirable attempt. That series where they blew their timeouts and didn't get a point was where it shifted.

Rhule looks like he's been crying. Raiola isn’t the whole offense. Johnson is, really. Lateef put up that good long pass that wasn't caught... It was just a few plays away. It was about the best I could expect. At least the boys had a shot.
