What with this warm stretch we're in, that kinda lulled me to sleep... I just realized our typical first freeze is just a couple weeks around the corner. We'll have to keep an eye out for it. Though, in recent years, its been a bit of a mixed bag.

The first freeze has typically been about on time (right in the middle of October), but either holds off, or temps rebound until early November. I'd say in the last 5 years or so, I've gotten away with keeping my plants alive much closer to November than I had before. One brief light freeze doesnt kill em, and I've noted that recently, the consistent, deeper freezes don't really start til November.

according to KETV, there's a chance of storms saturday evening, and then the lows are generally in the mid to low 70's starting Monday

Based on the ECMWF, much of the rain will occur on Sunday as a cold front pushes through. Looks relatively light/rain showers in our area so currently I'm assuming it won't add up to much for most people but a steady rain - especially north of town.

Looking at the long range (which is unreliable the further out you get) - the ECMWF is showing the first flakes of snow in parts of central/western NE around October 13th with potentially our first freeze/near freeze in eastern NE shortly there after. Confidence this far out is extremely low but this is on par with roughly the average anyway for this time of year.

I got my eye on Monday. Finally a day where I won't have the AC on, and itll still stay within my comfort zone. High of 68 and cloudy. After that temperatures look to still be above normal through the 12th.

Fall is definitely here today, not saying we won’t still have some warm days but it’s definitely a change from the last few weeks.

Already have 1.65” of rain from yesterday and today and it’s still raining.

Not super surprised, but crazy how theres really no frost or freeze in sight yet. Talking about getting into late October by now.

I remember as a kid, trick or treating was always freezing cold. Or even just carving pumpkins outside a week before Halloween was almost prohibitively cold by the time dusk came around. That was also back when standard time started in mid-October. Same with the general feeling of fall, harvest time, even if youre into pumpkin patch going, it's just not the same if its not cold.

Feeling nostalgic I guess. I put up my Halloween decorations today, and even though it was a little cool the last two days, the forecast indicates true fall weather is gonna have trouble taking hold for some time. It just hasn't really felt like fall yet.

Right now i am on a 2 week river cruise through middle Europe. It’s been chilly and cloudy most days, with highs struggling to reach 60 degrees and nights mostly around 50 degrees. So it definitely feels autumnal here.
Of note, however, the German winery we toured had a question put to the owners as to whether they produce ice wine (eiswein), which is a sweet dessert style late harvest wine that by law requires 7 nights on the vine with nights at or below the freezing point. He indicated that up until 15-20 years ago they proudly produced eiswein, which was done about the first week of November. Back then the other grapes were harvested starting in mid October, as soon as they ripened. However since that time due to summer heatwaves they have needed to harvest their grapes in September, and this year the harvest began before September 10 and all the grapes needed to be picked before the end of September, or else they would have rotted on the vine. So it has become impossible to produce eiswein, as the frosts don’t occur before November.

I just got back from Colorado where the remnants of a tropical storm was dumping rain. Mid October that should have been snow, instead it was flooding.

No fan of the wind today, but its good to finally see a forecast where I'm confident the AC won't kick on.

Sounds like theres a chance of a frost tonight. Local news has trended their forecast low down in the past few days, while the NWS has remained at upper 30's, which wouldnt quality as a frost. Guess we'll see. Im gonna let my plants ride though, they'll be fine. No real other shot for probably the rest of the month. So if that pans out it'll be another late freeze.

How do you put your mower at the back of the garage when the trees are still full of leaves? I'm normally mulching up leaves late in to November or Early December. At the rate this year is going I'll be mowing leaves until late December if not early January.

Two steps

1) Due to storm damage, I have nowhere near the trees I used to have. Have had to take down three this year.
2) I can still get the mower out if needed, but the snow blower is ready to go.

They really altered the forecast low for tonight, from a potential frost to a freeze warning. Probably colder tonight than last night. That kinda came out of nowhere.

My plants were a little unhappy this morning with the low of 35, but if it gets down to 31, Id have to say they'll probably be kaput.

Wonder why they changed the forecast late yesterday. It wasn’t even that cold this morning. Most places in the metro were at or above 40, although it does look like the surrounding areas did dip into the lower 30’s.

My own outside temp said 35 when I left Gretna about 5 AM. When I got to Fremont, it was 34

Agree, I will be mowing probably till Thanksgiving mostly to pick up leaves, can’t wait to be done.

Boy, it is quite the picture perfect night to pick up some sticks and have a fire, nicely char up some Wimmer's hot dogs til theyre poppin and sizzlin and hit em with some Dijon, and wash em down with a few cold ones. And thats exactly what I'm gonna do. I live for this, my paradise.

I caught Bill's analysis last night. Not surprised at all, given the history lately. I just kinda long for a white Christmas for once. I think it's been, darn, ten years(?) since we've had a decent snow at or around Christmas.

Just been warm up to January lately, then boom, it dumps all the snow in January and February. There's no fun in that. At least when it snows in December, there's some charm to be had with it.

So it was our first official freeze. It actually got down to 30, so it wasn't even just a glancing one.

Well, I’m good since a hard freeze is considered 28° or below, I’m not sure it got below about 33° in Bellevue and all my canna plants are still green and looks good.

Exactly where I'm at, it got down to 32, and none of my plants got bit too bad. So in my book its just an official freeze, not a killing freeze. So if anybody has plants that made it last night, it looks like it'll be at least another week before another threat. Really late. Usually by now I'm cutting stuff down and throwing in the towel. I still have tomatoes that could use a little more time to ripen, and thats crazy to me that I'll be able to ride em out.

Should continue to be a pleasant weather week for the area with highs approaching 70 today. However, things will soon change and by late this weekend and early next week, we'll get our first real shot of "cold" air with lows in the low to mid 20s by Sunday night into Monday and highs in the 40s (with a low end risk of a few flurries/snow showers though odds look very low currently).

Looking at the long range, the cold shot of air won't last long and there really isn't currently any snow events on the horizon - in fact depending on timing of cold front(s) pushing through, possibly some thunderstorms yet as low pressure systems are expected to pass well north of us with our area mostly being in a zonal/northwest flow but consistently on the warm/south side of the low pressures.

Perfect fall morning today. As a photographer I was really sad I wasn't out taking photos this morning. When the sun came up, it was filtered through the broken clouds, lighting up all this great fall color we are having. Clouds were making nice dark backdrops behind the glowing orange trees. It just looked great out there for a few min today!

This is definitely my kind of weather. I went out for a walk and got all bundled up as if it was gonna be cold. Not even close! I'll give 39 is "cold" but really easy to keep warm. I wore my winter coat, and a cap, and I could have gotten away with just a decent jacket.

I haven't even turned the heat on and it's floating around 60-62 on it's own. Perfect for me. This is my energy conservation weather. I'll see how tonight goes, low 20's does sound kinda cold. Maybe just cook something, do laundry, or throw a couple logs in the fireplace, it'll probably be just right.

I finally had to pick the last 7 tomatoes from our patio garden Saturday. Some ended up in the chili I made on Sunday.
Cold weather and me aren’t exactly bosom buddies. We head to Florida for Thanksgiving and into December, before a brief return to Omaha, then back south for most of the winter. I much prefer 30c to 30f.

I pulled the last of my peppers saturday morning, I don't know about y'all but my jalapeno harvest this year was absolutely bonkers.

I had a lot of success with bell peppers this year. Much more so than last year.

FWIW, no real big/long lasting cool downs either anytime soon until we get out into "la-la-land" where the 12z ECMWF is trying to give us a snow storm around Thanksgiving. Nearly no chance this will actually happen though but I guess we'll see. Sure we'll have some stretches of "cooler" weather but nothing much really below normal anyway.

I don't think anyone would need ac, its not humid out and when the sun sets the temps drop quite a bit.

It easily gets up to the upper 70's without ac at my house on a sunny day thats above 65 ish. I figured we were past that time of year. Nope. I always just keep the temp set at 66, if it kicks on, it kicks on. Thats why I always open the windows at night until it gets too cold (for me thats 56 ish) to retain that cool air so hopefully it doesn’t kick on later. As soon as its cooler outside than it is inside, windows open. I have a fair bit of Nordic blood in me, so I guess maybe I'm predisposed to like it cold lol.

When its actually cold out, I keep the heat set at 54. It rarely kicks on just from retaining whatever ground heat, water heater, cooking, dryer, and sunlight gained throughout the day. Feels like probably gonna be waiting til after Christmas til I even have to think about all that.
