Hemp Industry
Let me start out by saying this post isn't about whether you're "for" or "against" the hemp related products currently being sold (CBD, "delta-whatever") in many places. Some of you have varying opinions on the matter. That's fine. However, the complete BS that our Government just pulled needs attention IMO. Enough is enough.
Yes it's great that the shut down is over. However, they "conveniently" snuck through the banning all hemp related products across the country (aside for making rope, etc) as they passed legislation to restart the Government. That means pretty much every single one of the 42 degrees type shops are about to go out of business once the change goes into affect this time next year. Some of you will be glad to see this happen. However, regardless if you are "for" or "against" them, this is a pretty substantial hit in tax revenue and sizable increase in vacancy rates - not just here obviously, in many states across the country.
Personally I find it ridiculous that our Government can just add random things like this to bills, have very little (if any) discussion about it - and force it through. In this case using the excuse of "we need to keep it out of the hands of children". Umm, you already have to be at least 18 to purchase (in many states 21). Do children get it anyhow? Probably. Do children also get their hands on other things like alcohol, etc, etc? Obviously. Are we going to ban that too?? Is prescription drug abuse a FAR LARGER problem for children? 100% yes.
I'm sorry, but what a crock of sh*t. Its clear yet again that our Government is bought and paid for by lobbyists. Otherwise, who was even asking for this?? Yet somehow our Government is able to work at record speed to get this passed for something that affects so many (either directly or indirectly) and will absolutely decimate an entire industry. Because big pharmacy lobbyists didn't like how it was cutting into their profits. Thats the REAL reason.

Re: Hemp Industry
I can't touch on any recent changes as I'm uninformed.
I'll give two cents though. I consider 42 and 50 Shades and the like illegitimate. Their fault? Absolutely not. They skirt the law by finding some chemical loophole that allows them to sell it. And I don't care, there's no difference between an 18 year old, a 21 year old, or a 50 year old going to these places. They're not there for "medicine", they're there to get high. So I'll be glad to see them go.
However, I'm 1000% certain cannabis has medicinal properties, but the problem is 98% (dont quote me) use it to get high under the guise that its for medicinal purposes. It really undermines the cause of people who really, really need it.
If you could "micro dose" long enough, you'd get the benefits, but you wouldn't get high, would they still be on board? Something tells me no.
I'm all for cannabis for medicinal purposes. I also think if someone wants to grow it for personal use, that should not be a problem.
I just get frustrated with all the youngsters vaping and smoking casually and recreationally during the day and out in public. As a former smoker, we used to be scared of being caught, but kids nowadays don't give one iota.
Do that |expletive| at home.

Big win for the Mexican cartels. They don't need boats, so while their competition is getting literally bombed in the ocean, they'll just bring it across the border via trucks and tunnels. Big pharma will sell more pain killers to the rest of the population.

Unfortunately you're 100% right. All this is going to do is make it so people will seek out illegal means instead (maybe not for hemp products specifically but others for sure) - all because a made up problem that they used to push an agenda with basically no process at all to making that decision.BuildTaller wrote: Thu Nov 13, 2025 2:32 pm Big win for the Mexican cartels. Gee, wonder how much $$$ McConnell was paid by lobbyists to ensure this happens?? Just reinforces the fact we NEED term limits (he's been in office for 40 years) and they need to get rid of "lobbyists" which lets call it what it REALLY is these days - bribes and corruption. Enough is enough.

I am confused about all of this... so NO Republicans (either politicians or registered voters) have their hands in that industry? It's only run by Dems and liberals? I mean I do understand the premise that maybe it's not their first investment. However, if it makes money (and A LOT of money) I imagine they'd have to touch it.stormchaser wrote: Thu Nov 13, 2025 3:03 pmUnfortunately you're 100% right. Kinda like Vegas... there has to be gobs of politicians backing that industry - so trying to shut it down seems counterproductive. To be fair, I do not personally know a lot about it... I'm simply making an observation from a financial point of view.

Re: Hemp Industry
I'm sure there a multiple politicians backing or invested in the industry - but big pharmacy has WAY more power and people it's backing and in the grand scheme of things, the hemp industry is tiny. The greedy bastards at big pharma started to see it cutting into their revenue too much so they needed to find a way to stop it. The restarting of the Government was the PERFECT opportunity as the "news" of this happening would be far overshadowed by the Government reopening.djc311 wrote: Thu Nov 13, 2025 4:18 pmI am confused about all of this... so NO Republicans (either politicians or registered voters) have their hands in that industry? Ultimately this is all the same reason marijuana hasn't been federally legalized (and up until recently was classified as an equally dangerous drug as fentanyl - which LOL). Greed and corruption - plain and simple. These idiots in office are supposed to represent the people but all they ever represent is big business and pretend to give a sh*t about "the people". The only time they "care" about the people is when they need votes.

Re: Hemp Industry
I totally get the "Big Pharma" thing. Back in my day, I was also really into researching the corruption within pharmaceuticals, and I was mad and active about it. The issue surpasses politics on both sides of the ring. It's been an issue for every administration.
Now, personally, I wish it was legal. I used to use it to help get a good night sleep, ground up in a capsule, just as you would pop a melatonin, no intent to get high at all. At some point the stuff got too strong and it started giving me trippy nightmares. So there's the issue for me. There's no way to tell what, and what amount you're taking. If I could take some for the medicinal purposes only, I would totally.
What mucked it up is anywhere you go to get legal weed is basically a headshop. It's a joke, all the places that have their employees wear white coats. Like come on, you're a budtender, not a pharmacist
So what ruins weed for me, is that, like I said, 98% use it to get high, recreationally, out in public. It ruins the legitimacy of any compounds that are actually medicinal. In principal, its just like an opioid. Yes, it does the job, but it also sends you into outer space.
It matters what you use it for. I don't like how accessible it is/had become/whatever. If they really need it for whatever ailment, they'd be happy to put some work in for it, and wouldn't smoke it. So yes, in that sense, it is just like alcohol. So many kids I see just taking a puff without a care in the world, or ripping a vape pen even inside of a building. It either tells you about their character, or, or, it tells you what the weed is doing to them.

No matter your views on THC products, they shoved through legislation in a supposedly "clean" CR that wipes out a $28 billion industry and 300k jobs. This is absolutely a disgrace and the politicians that pushed this through should be ashamed.

Re: Hemp Industry
Despite how it's done, it'll get a result. Don't make it about him. Think about the problem.
You have to admit, it is getting out of control. And the real stuffs not even legal here lol. There's head shops every half mile where any dork seeking a high can walk in and grab an eighth, take a hit in the parking lot and be on their way. They either dont realize or don't care (isn’t that a side effect?) that that's still driving while intoxicated. No different than somebody grabbing a handful of shooters at Hy-vee. You know what they're fixing to do.
I wish it were legal for every legitimate medicinal use. But its the recreational use that ruins it. There's like a moral code thats degraded, where now it's cool/acceptable to be high all day. If they did it when they get home after work, on their day off, not in traffic, I don't think there'd be any reason to ban it. They did it to themselves, or maybe the younger reckless people did it for em.
I'm not for a ban at all, just recognize there is a problem. Something needs fixed, and maybe pressing the pause button is at least an attempt to see what happens. It doesn't bug me because I don't use it. I tried 50 shades once (that was my last dabble). It worked, but I said "well, what's the point?" That was my last use and the moment my brain and my body aligned in agreement that we would never even feel like taking it up again.
I have a relative that grew up here, moved to Colorado a long time ago, and now they're considering coming back to Omaha in retirement. They cited drugs among other things as for wanting to come back and live a so-called safer, less problematic life (i guess). I said "it's actually no better here. At least you have mountains!"

Re: Hemp Industry
Personally I don't see the problem at all. It's already illegal to drive under the influence and this is no different. If someone is choosing to get high with it, thats their choice and certainly not something the Government should be deciding for anyone - just like marijuana. IMO, it's no different than choosing to get drunk (actually I'd argue it's WAY SAFER than people who get drunk).Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Nov 14, 2025 10:36 am Despite how it's done, it'll get a result. And the only reason it's being banned is due to lobbyists for big pharma. They can try to spin it any way they want, but that's the reality and is 100% the same reason marijuana isn't federally legalized already. It's about money/greed - plain and simple.

Re: Hemp Industry
Well my main point is people seem to have a lackadasical perception toward marijuana and it's counterparts. I totally agree, getting high on weed is probably less detrimental than getting drunk, but that also leads to that "hey man, everybody does it" attitude (which is a practical enough assumption for the user to make), but that doesn't mean feel free to smoke it in parks, on the street, or in public in general. There's just something about cannabis, where people think it's okay to wake and bake, and it doesnt carry the same stigma as somebody who starts their day with a shot of vodka. Its the same as drunk driving. Sure, it's all illegal, but that surely doesn't keep people from doing it. And I think the ease of access has been the issue. I couldn't tell ya who you could get real weed (that actually could have some medicinal properties) from, but I could sure name off a dozen places you can get delta 8. And thats it, that proves its just for people who want to get high.

Re: Hemp Industry
One last thing. Smoking cannabis isn't healthy. It might be less detrimental. Throwing it down your gullet, it may actually be healthy. However, where they went wrong with edibles was making them into candies, cakes, and drinks. That made it a novelty, and a mockery IMO. Sure, its a fun concept, but let's be serious. In reality, what I'd like, is if I need a sleep aid, perse, I'd much prefer it to be a reliable, exact dose that I can just pop like a melatonin. I don't want to eat a gummy bear for medicine, that's just silly.

I do agree that the younger generation tends to be a lot more open with these types of things compared to previous generations...but I think that's more of a societal shift and people understanding that it isn't this big bad terrible thing like propaganda such as "reefer madness" tried to make people believe.Habits76 wrote: Fri Nov 14, 2025 12:26 pm We get it Busguy2010, you don't like weed. On a side note, want to quickly and easily fix the overcrowded prison system? Legalize marijuana federally and end people's sentences that are in prison specifically for marijuana related crimes. Pretty simple really.

Id be all for it if they just allowed people to grow it for personal use. I hate smelling it every which way you look out in public, and definitely hate that every day crashouts can regularly be seen sipping vape pens, blunts, etc, walking down the street, driving down the road, walking into Walmart... And have easy access to it. Like come on, they're not using that stuff medicinally. It actually makes a mockery of the people who actually, genuinely use it to treat an ailment. So you'd think maybe if they were allowed to grow it, and put the work in for their medicine, they would use it genuinely for their "ailments"? I HIGHLY doubt it lol.

I see where you're going with that. But the thing with cannabis is since it does have some medicinal properties, I've noted that people are too lax about it. I used to smoke weed, but back then, we did it at home. Theres a reason for 4:20, meaning, after school or work. Theyve taken it out of context. Thats the bottom line. With all the relaxed kids out here now, they think its NBD to take a puff in traffic or, like I was saying the other day, two seconds before going Into Walmart. You wouldnt catch me killing a beer on the walk in. They think its cool because they think it's what everybody wants. Its not. On top of that, half the people I see out in public sipping on a vape pen look like they probably bought a 25oz bud Ice with their cartridge anyway.almighty_tuna wrote: Tue Dec 16, 2025 3:41 pm Next up on Busguy's Common Sense Podcast: You can only drink alcohol if you brew or distill it yourself.
If I ever came down with an ailment that would benefit from it, I would 1000% grow it for myself, but I'd have decency in how I administer it. At least make edibles or tinctures. Smoking or vaping, it just screams doing it for the high. So do it at home. Problem solved. I don't even care if they do it in the park, at the golf course, fishing, or what have you. That's recreation. Doing it in traffic, or when there's a bunch of people walking into a store behind you, children in tow, that's just against code. It's become too convenient, and people don't care, and yeah, thats a side effect.
I dont hate the plant, im starting to hate a lot of the people who use it. They give it a bad name. Let them grow it for themselves so they dont have to be paranoid about it and see what happens.

I was looking up some zoning code this morning and I never realized it, but Omaha added "Chapter 57 - CANNABIS" to its Municipal Code this fall.

Who is to judge what an ailment is? mental issues, ADHD, OCD. Those are not visible ailments. Just because you think you can judge what someone is experiencing by looking at them certainly isn't true. Other states certainly treat these issues with cannabis. Also, forms of arthritis, cancer pain, etc. So many uses. Would we prefer more opiates? Are you a pharmaceuticals rep?Busguy2010 wrote: Sat Dec 13, 2025 7:02 pm Id be all for it if they just allowed people to grow it for personal use.
Just because you "hate smelling it" is not a valid rationale for prohibition. That may well be your reason, but that just isn't valid. Neither is having to look at people that look like "crashouts," and seemingly believing their appearance is due to their cannabis use.
There are many things in society I do not like. Religion encroaching on non religious spaces. Guns. fireworks. But, just because I don't like them doesn't allow me to make them illegal. And, much more harm can be done by all three things I listed than marijuana, in my opinion.
And, the idea that being ok with growing it for personal use is also dumb. As the other post said, you then should only be able to consume alcohol if you distill or brew it yourself.

I'm not for prohibition at all. I just wish people had more etiquette. Im all for its use for arthritis, pain, cancer, appetite, anxiety (although thats why I quit because it gave me extreme anxiety) insomnia, etc. None of those things mean you have to smoke out in public areas where theres other people subject to it. For me, its no different than when I smell somebody smoking a cigarette right next to the entrance or in traffic. Theyre both just unpleasant and unhealthy as someone who wants to be subject to neither.omaha79 wrote: Wed Dec 17, 2025 10:03 am Who is to judge what an ailment is? mental issues, ADHD, OCD. And believe me, I've been in that world, and I can say with confidence many who do will also readily smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, carry a gun, drive like feces, etc. Just take a bong rip at home, better yet an edible or tincture, that should be enough. People just don't care.
I'll let ya know I'm more of an indica guy, if anything. I really enjoyed how it improved my appetite and sleep, and general body pain. But I didnt like the high. Honestly it gave me some batshit crazy dreams, so although I'd sleep mostly through the night, I'd wake up with my day started on the wrong foot. And then I'd walk out and my roommates would be passing a pipe, so I was just part of the rotation. So for a while there, I was pretty much high 24/7. One day I woke up and said, what am I doing? Rent was up, and when I moved, I didn't have the influence to smoke all day. I continued to smoke occasionally, and eventually the want to quietly faded (ha) away. Haven't gotten high in 8ish years. Can't believe its been that long, time flies. I'd use it now for medicinal purposes if it weren't for the high.

Re: Hemp Industry
It's not something I'm very interested in for myself. I agree with the comparison to cigarettes. and it felt like we got away from cigarettes when they did the restaurant/bar ban. I was all for that as I hated going out and coming home smelling like cigarrettes. I have never smoked. It's not my thing. I'm not for prohibition, but I also agree that being inconsiderate and just doing whatever you want isn't the answer either.
I feel like with vaping, whether it's THC, Delta, or nicotine, courtesy has gone out the window and people just do it wherever. And, I've seen a ton of bartenders have to remind patrons that smoking, even vape, isn't allowed inside establishments. And, at the dive bar I frequent along with others, I've seen patrons cop attitude. "It's only vape." Well, that doesn't matter if you're producing a constant cloud with your massive vape apparatus. Go outside or to a smokers patio.
I just think the overall level of entitlement in our culture is off the charts in all areas anymore. It's not just smoking.
