Over 160 swoop in for second Platte River Migration Fest


LEXINGTON — Just as the Sandhill Cranes make their pit stop in the area during their migration, over 160 people swooped in over the weekend to take part in the second Platte River Migration Fest on Saturday, March 25.

The event was again hosted by Mac’s Creek Winery and Brewery.

The four businesses that took part in the inaugural year, Canyon Lakes Brewing Company of Johnson Lake, Kinkaider Brewery & Sideshow Spirits of Broken Bow, the Upper Room Brewery of Kearney and Mac’s Creek of Lexington, all returned for the second year. The two newcomers to the event were Pal’s Brewery and Feather River Winery, both of North Platte.

Pal’s Brewery Company has been open since March 29, 2017.

IIRC, Lexington has had quite the population boom over the last few decades thanks mostly to IBP/Tyson. Well, perhaps "boom" isn't the right word but they've seen population growth while many similar cities have seen theirs shrink.

Lexington is losing its Tyson beef plant. That’s 3,200 jobs. That’s going to gut Lexington,

Not to mention all of the jobs that are supported by the plant. Hopefully another company comes in or Lexington is cooked

Huge blow to Lexington, and they didn’t even give much notice, the plant closes in a few months. Could be a similar situation when Cabela’s left Sidney and devastated the local economy.

Sad to see what's happening in Lexington. I grew up in a town of ~10,000 people in MN with a meat packing plant as the primary employer (by far) so it isn't hard to imagine how this will absolutely devastate that area...but it will likely impact many people outside of that area as well.

Yeah, this is going to affect all of the towns between Kearney and North Platte in some manner.

Does anyone know WHY they’re closing? I lived through the packing house debacle in South Omaha in the late 60’s/early 70’s. There were 2 suicides just in my neighborhood. These closings are beyond devastating for a community.

Certainly something profit-related. Maybe they want to be closer to the end shipping destination instead of closer to the beef sources?
