Re: 2025 Weather Thread
Interestingly, what snow had fallen while I was out was more spherical. It actually looked more like Ice melt itself, ironically.

It's very pretty.
It seems like its holding off. As soon as this stupid Tex-|expletive| game is over, we'll see what KETV has to say.

Temps ended up warming slightly during the overnight. Consequently, snow totals have likely dropped some and I'd expect most people to end up in the 3-6 inch range now.

It is a pretty snow. It’s barely snowing now. Just looking at it , I’m guessing maybe 2-3 inches. SW Omaha area.

It's coming down pretty good right now. I love it. I actually can't recall the last time its snowed this much "this early" used to be a normal thing, but in recent years, its held off til much later, so im almost a little surprised.

Re: 2025 Weather Thread
Other thing I love about snow is how normally when its this cloudy this time of year, I have to have my lights on during the day, and I hate that. Its bright as could be here because of the snow.
On the other hand, I'm really glad I don't need to be anywhere today haha. They haven't touched my street and I'd be damned if I even could go anywhere. It looks like an ice rink.

Probably a good 4 inches now. This is one of the earlier significant snows we’ve had. Maybe the earliest of at least 4 inches in the last 10 or 15 years. And now the wind is picking up.Cermak wrote: Sat Nov 29, 2025 7:45 am It is a pretty snow. It’s barely snowing now. Just looking at it , I’m guessing maybe 2-3 inches. SW Omaha area.

Re: 2025 Weather Thread
I wouldn't doubt it. Using my Sker-dar [my memory could be a little fuzzy due to all the Iowa Losses] I can only point out two games I remember that it snowed during, prior, or after a game, and it ended up being significant. One was the 9-6 win over Michigan State, and the other was when Taylor Martinez was playing. I think you're spot on with the "its been a while" assessment.Cermak wrote: Sat Nov 29, 2025 4:14 pm This is one of the earlier significant snows we’ve had. I swear growing up it used to be normal to have snowed by or around Thanksgiving. But like you said, its been a while. And look at that winter wonderland abound. I love it.

Re: 2025 Weather Thread
Fortunately/unfortunately (depending on if you like snow), this snow isn't going anywhere anytime soon and we'll get more tonight/tomorrow - just minor accumulations like a dusting up to an inch so nothing major, but still.
We won't see above freezing temps for at least a week with our first single digit low (Monday night) and subzero low (Wednesday night....low of -6) coming up this week. The sun itself may still be strong enough to melt some of it regardless, but a lot of what we have right now will be sticking around for the foreseeable future anyway.
On a side note, this is going to be an pretty challenging winter for my family and I. We have a new 100 foot cement driveway that's in the shade probably 98% of the time and in a house that's northward facing...and since it's new cement, we can't use ice melt on it at all this winter. Oh, and it has a pretty healthy slope on part of it. I'm using sand on it to help add traction, but this will be interesting regardless. Pray for us...lol

I have the same problem with my house facing north and I hate it. Every winter, the driveways are clear across the street and mine is full of ice. Someday when I move, one of my main requirements will be not facing north.stormchaser wrote: Sun Nov 30, 2025 6:53 am On a side note, this is going to be an pretty challenging winter for my family and I. In general, ice melt is bad for concrete and will damage it over time. While new concrete may be more vulnerable, it's still damaging as it gets older. I had a portion of my driveway replaced more than five years ago and I still just use sand. It doesn't melt the ice, but the grittiness makes it not slippery. And so far, it's held up perfectly, which is nice because driveways cost around $10k (or more, especially for ones the size of yours) to replace and I'd rather not deal with that again.

Re: 2025 Weather Thread
I've lived in houses facing all directions, and undoubtedly, north facing is the worst in winter. Although I did live in a south facing house that didn't have a driveway, but an alley in the back. Just as bad.
I didn't bug around, at some point, I realized basically everybody is unprepared for snowfall, so I always buy sand on a sunny day. Its funny, and can be frustrating (if you're looking for some) the feeding frenzy on Ice melt and sand bags. So for many years now, I've kept 4 sand bags in my truck bed, and if its tough enough to gain traction, I'll pop one open, and replace it with a new one when everybody isnt sold out.
I prefer sand. And a little tip, all the home centers either run out of tube sand, or "tube sand" is overpriced because it's "tube sand" Just buy all purpose sand. Its the same stuff, coarse grit sand in a different package.
I remember that one time I went to Home Depot, and they were out of tube sand. Empty pallet, and not far from it was a full pallet of all purpose sand. Dude was kinda freaking out at the employee about it, and I saw the full pallet of all purpose, and, don't mind if I do. We didnt actually say it (he was obviously not a contractor) but I knew we had the mutual feeling of "man, that guy was a Richard" because she had a little smirk as the guy stormed out, and she kindly and happily rang me up for two bags of sand. Ever since, I said I'm not gonna run out of sand

Let's go Randby
I cannot remember the last time there was such a consistently cold forecast before Christmas. Probably an unpopular opinion, but I've grown frustrated in recent years with how long its taken to feel like winter. Record highs and tornado warnings in December? Apparently not this year (though I always knock on wood).
Other thing I always find funny is often, despite us being farther north, we miss out on snow and at the same time Kansas and Missouri get hit. Looks to be the case coming up.

I've never requested one myself, but I've seen a number of those barrels of sand in all the neighborhoods I've lived. I thought, shoot, if I knew it was gonna snow this much, I would have gotten one. The deadline is ironocally 40 minutes from now.

My son had 3 hockey games up in Sioux City today. Lots of snow up there. I took Highway 75 on the way up and I29 on the way home. On the way up we started hitting snow just north of Decatur and it was really bad north of Winnebago. When we left there was quite a bit of snow on the ground in Sioux City and snow on the sides of I29 all the way back to Onawa about. It was in the mid 20's when we left Sioux City and 35 when we got back to Omaha. Quite a difference in 80 miles.

Re: 2025 Weather Thread
Just got back from Boone, IA an hr ago. I knew they were expecting snow but they prob had 4-5 in when we left at 7. Roads were terrible especially Hwy 30 near Ames. They pulled the plows off the roads and it was a slow go. Thankfully we were able to head south out of Des Moines and onto Hwy 34 and there was little to no snow the rest of the way.

Glad we missed this storm. It pretty much went to the north and east of us. I know parts of Iowa got hit again pretty good. With the past few December’s being somewhat mild and dry I had gotten used to winter not really starting till after Christmas. These past few weeks have been a little rough and a wake up call that we are still in the Midwest and winter can start in November as well.Brad wrote: Sat Dec 06, 2025 9:12 pm My son had 3 hockey games up in Sioux City today. Should get some light snow in the area over the next few hours. Shouldn't add up to much but maybe a dusting anyway so possibly a few slick spots tomorrow morning as a result.

Re: 2025 Weather Thread
Odds are currently DECREASING that we will actually have a white Christmas in the Omaha area this year. I know, we have some snow on the ground already. However, temps today and especially tomorrow will be above freezing (tomorrow probably in the mid to upper 40s) so some will melt with that warm up. Then we cool back down for a few days before a more somewhat sustained warmup is on the horizon with several days depicted to be in the 40s and 50s in the local area next week (if the last several runs of the ECMWF verify anyway) with maybe some areas approaching 60.
Currently all depicted snowfalls for the most part are expected to hit areas north and east of Omaha (as they slide southeast through those areas) with no big/impactful snowfalls currently depicted in our area.
Obviously things can quickly change this time of year so who knows what will actually end up happening...but for the time being anyway, it looks like what we have for snow is about to disappear.

I’m fine with a brown Christmas. We could still have a little old snow left over in shady spots. As it is difficult for snow to melt this time of year with the short daylight hours.stormchaser wrote: Mon Dec 08, 2025 7:22 am Odds are currently DECREASING that we will actually have a white Christmas in the Omaha area this year. Re: 2025 Weather Thread
Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what happens. The long range stuff (way off in la-la-land and typically fairly unreliable) shows potential "golfing weather" Christmas Eve/Christmas Day in our area with highs potentially around 60.
For the time being, the jet stream has shifted a little bit further north so despite the fact we are still in the same pattern as before, the storm track is far enough north and east of us (as storms are dropping south and east out of Canada) that we are depicted to miss out on most of it and stay on the warm side of things. Who knows if that will be what actually happens in the coming weeks as you don't have to go too far for areas that will see wintry weather - pretty much from the Dakotas, Minnesota, down into northern, central and eastern Iowa, etc on and off during the next couple of weeks. It wouldn't take much of a shift for us to get hit again.
For the foreseeable future, things are depicted to just graze our area though as the cold air wraps around each storm system. This is the scenario expected later today/tomorrow here. We'll have a relatively warm day today before the front/cold air pushes through as a storm passes to our north and east. The temp will plummet and the winds will get strong with potential for blizzard conditions from around Sioux City on north and east where they have more snow on the ground (and a little additional expected to fall) followed by a stretch of colder weather for a few days and then things will start warming up again and the process repeats itself.

Re: 2025 Weather Thread
Hope everyone is ready for some crazy wind in the area tonight. A "high wind warning" has been issued for gusts that could be 60+mph.
The 12z HRRR is actually showing the potential for gusts in excess of 70 mph. The map below is from the 12z HRRR for ~ 1 AM tonight. It shows "76 knots" (aka 87 mph). However, keep in mind this is at 850mb so these number are aloft some and not at the surface...but gusts of 70 mph at the surface seems "possible" anyway. Could be dealing with some widespread power outages in the area as a result. Thankfully since the trees don't currently have leaves, this shouldn't be as much of an issue since the branches don't catch the wind as much as a result.
But yikes:

Re: 2025 Weather Thread
KETV is crazy - they have Omaha well within the 1 to 3 inch snowfall range for Friday night/Saturday. However, only the 12z GFS supports this (and the GFS tends to be less reliable with storms like this in my experience) with most computer models showing that we will struggle to get even a dusting of snow on Saturday with the heavier accumulations staying off to our east and north. Unless this thing shift pretty drastically south/west, ZERO chance we end up getting anywhere close to 3 inches of snow in Omaha IMO ("maybe" an inch but those odds don't look great currently). Still plenty of time for that to change and trends will need to be watched but still. Yikes.

Thanks for the heads up and feedback.. I saw KETV’s 1-3 inches proclamation and I said to myself “what the…”..stormchaser wrote: Thu Dec 11, 2025 4:57 pm KETV is crazy - they have Omaha well within the 1 to 3 inch snowfall range for Friday night/Saturday. Yikes.
But like you said, things can change. We’ll see…

The 12z HRRR is continuing the trend of Omaha struggling to see much if any accumulation at all with this storm tonight/tomorrow (maybe a dusting but that might be the extent of it for most people).
These are the depicted snow totals based on the 12z HRRR. The heavier band of snow has trended further north and east pushing it further away from Omaha.
