I thought the city is trying to beautify itself. However the city gave some money back to the federal goverment and allowed the owner of one of the outdoor advertising companies to erect about 20 tall advertisment boards along I-80 from 42nd St to I-680. Not only did they put up these ugly signs they cut down the trees around them. If the signs had neon on them you might think you were in vegas. I think the city made a huge mistake in allowing these new signs! How about tear all of the signs down and plant a lot of trees as a green space all along the interstate.

Drivers in the next two months should begin seeing the completion of 18 new billboards along Interstate 80 in Omaha.


Crews are putting up billboard poles along the south edge of Interstate 80 between 96th and 108th Streets.

Crews have been working on the structures of the billboards. The advertising signs should be up within 30 to 60 days, said Dick Deitering, vice president and general manager of Lamar Outdoor Advertising.

The new billboards are along the south side of I-80, east of I-680.

The Nebraska Department of Roads recently revised its interpretation of rules dating to the1950s to allow the new signs.

The new billboards were criticized this summer by a leader of a group pushing to beautify the city. Deitering said he hasn't received complaints from the public about the billboards.

He said advertisers are excited about new signs.

The change that allowed the billboards focused on the state's interpretation of what constitutes municipal boundaries.

Under state regulations, billboards can be placed along the Interstate in commercial and industrial zones within the boundaries of municipalities.

The state used to interpret the "boundaries of municipalities" as meaning the city limits. The city limits were based on boundaries that existed in 1959.

Lamar argued that it's reasonable to interpret that boundary to include the area outside the city limits where cities have zoning authority.
