HyVee (90th and Center)

This Hy-Vee is the relative runt of the litter. They don’t have the product depth that the larger stores have. While it is relatively close to my home I routinely shop at Peony Park or 96th and Q, where the selection is much larger.
Aldi is my true store of choice, however, for all of the basics.

I live near this store too and I too would rather go to 96th & Q, Less of a madhouse, more selection and I've seen enough moldy produce and unstocked shelves at 90th & Center to turn me off from that store for good. I always pined for a full-service Fareway at 84th & Frederick and just move the meat market within.

They are trying to save it. There will be 12 charging stations and right now there are 8 tight spots on the west and 5 large spots on the north.

With the opening of Tesla chargers to all vehicles it has caused some troubles. Not all vehicles have the charge port in the same spot, with some needing extra parking room. The chargers come assembled with cement bases in groups of four that they drop in place. This hopefully will allow the air station to be an open spot.

Call me almost totally ignorant on the entire topic of electric vehicles, but is the idea behind what Hy-Vee is doing that people will drive to Hy-Vee in their EV, park at an available charging station, walk to the store and do their shopping while their car charges, then walk back across the parking lot with their groceries, unplug their now fully charged car, and drive off?

Sure, but there also is no indication that this particular charger will be open to all EVs. So far only a limited number have been opened up to non-Teslas.

That may be what Hy-vee is hoping for but its doubtful that will happen for a couple of reasons. I think in general the idea of someone hosting a supercharger or any EV charging solution is that yes a certain portion of EV owners will stop and frequent the business be it a restaurant, gas station, hotel, grocery store, etc.

The thing is supercharging is about 3 times more expensive than the OPPD residential rate. Furthermore, any one in Omaha with enough money to afford a $50,000+ EV likely has a charging solution at their residence. Therefore, as a Tesla owner in Omaha I have no reason to use this supercharger and even if I went to this Hy-Vee as I do occasionally I wouldn't plug in.

What 90%+ of this supercharger's traffic is going to be will either be Tesla owners from out of town staying in Omaha or more than likely transient Tesla's driving through on I-80 needing a charge. Now Hy-vee might still find it valuable to give up 12 parking stalls on the chance that these people stop in the store or the gas station and buy something, but again I don't think it is going to be people grocery shopping using them.

Around the area, the Superchargers are at similar types of places. Runzas and Truck Stops in mid-Nebraska, Hy-Vee's in Iowa/Missouri/Nebraska, Super Targets in Minneapolis, and KumNGo's in Iowa. I think the surprising thing is that the metro hasn't had a 2nd one until now, and this is the first one on west side of the river. Des Moines has ~3, KC has ~8, ...

It'll be used heavily by travelers, but also by those visiting the city for work & relatives from KC/Kearney/DSM/MSP etc. One of the top reasons to use it will be to top up before returning home, or while passing through.

Yeah ostensibly driving by you'd have sworn everything was done and they were open. There was apparently something the city didn't like in the electrical permit though that had to be fixed.

The location isn't on the car's navigation system or their app yet. When that happens you'll likely be seeing Tesla's there pretty regularly.

The 90th and center location of Hy-Vee drives me up the wall. It is right down the street from my house so it’s super convenient but it’s literally the worst run Hy-Vee in Omaha. Many times I drive to Peony Park to avoid this store. Since around September, October 2025, I have been trying not to buy beer at a grocery store, instead buying it directly from breweries and cutting out the “middle man”. My one exception to this is the casual pint. That said when I do go to HyVee I still look at the beer isle and I noticed a couple weeks ago the beer wasn’t cold. Today when I was in there it still wasn’t cold so I said something to the manager and he said “we are waiting on a part and it will be a couple more weeks”. I feel like once again HyVee is lying. I guarantee you if this was the meat, milk, or ice cream, it would have been fixed the next day.

They better get their |expletive| together because with the upcoming mega-Bakers stores they could certainly start losing a lot of their customers. I use Hyvee for basically sale items at this point because I’m tired of their continued practice of raising prices regularly.

It also drives me bananas that they charge different prices at different stores for items that are not exclusives. Very shady for them to sell the same thing for $2 more at a store only a few miles away from another location. IMO.

Well, this is my neighborhood Hy-Vee so I’m typically in there about once a week, usually because of some advertised sale or because I happen to be driving right by and remembered we were out of this or that for dinner. Yesterday was one of those days and of course I must wander a few aisles out of curiosity. I saw a premium brand Italian pasta sauce on sale for $4 per jar discount so I figured I would try it. Plus a favorite sub sandwich condiment of mine isn’t sold at Baker’s so I picked 2 of them
up, on sale. I grabbed a couple of other things and went through self checkout and wouldn’t you know it neither item rang up at the sale price. I should have checked the receipt before I got home but didn’t. So I went back today to get my $5 that I was overcharged. First I went and photographed the sale price signs for those items then hit the customer service desk. The gentleman heard my complaint, circled the items on the receipt, didn’t ask to see my photographs, and promptly “refunded” me the full $17.97 cost of the items in question! So in essence I got all 3 items for free.
For once it paid to shop at that Hy-Vee. Literally.

I'm not super well acquainted with that location, but I've been there often enough recently. At least in the evening hours, it seems to be mostly kids working, and if you buy a bottle of wine or some beers, it seems hard to come by somebody of age to complete the sale. Every time I have, the lone person of age didn't even check my ID. I look plenty mature enough, but I'm not that old lol. Even got darn Saddle Creek Family Fare cards every time. They're just kinda loose, and I can see how that would trickle into price inaccuracies, and not having the fridge running.

I just got back from this Hy-vee. And I felt kinda bad I showed up at 9:47 and they close at 10. I walked out right at 9:59 with a lady carrying a basket. She walks over to her Tesla thats parked in one of the very closest spots to the door. Unloads and sets her empty basket in front of her car. I said it loud enough she might have heard me "well that's pretty shitty!". Given her swift and spry movement, I would guess there was no reason she couldn't have taken it back to guy locking the door.

It never fails to amaze me how many inconsiderate shoppers there are, who are just too damn lazy to haul their carts 40 feet to a cart corral or back into the store. ALDI has the right idea, forcing you to drop a quarter into the cart mechanism before you can access a cart. You virtually never see carts strewn about their parking areas.

It would be nice if people were just cool, ya know? I forgot to also mention some young dorks showed up at 10:01, and the manager had turned the door off, but hadn't actually locked it yet. Probably because he had to go back out the youngins actually manually opened the door lol. Ya know, when a store is closed, it means you probably can't buy anything... Maybe they didn't, I don't know.

Its just funny how many odd things ive seen at this particular Hy-vee. You wouldnt think...

I still want to hear the ending to that Tesla joke. Theres gotta be a good one out there.
