Now it’s getting an honor that cements that classic status nationally.
The 103-year-old South Omaha steakhouse was this week named a James Beard America’s Classics restaurant, an honor that only one other restaurant in Nebraska has received.

When I worked a couple of miles from there, we did a good number of lunches there. They were always a hitGreg S wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 3:34 pmMe too. It's one of those Omaha restaurants that we take out of town coworkers to.

I was getting a little worried about the place for awhile there. The exterior was in bad need of a paint job, the original wood awning over the main entrance was rotting away, parking lot was in poor shape with grass growing up through the cracks, and their flatware looked like it was bought at a flea market. I remember I was struggling to cut my steak and then I looked at my steak knife and the serrations were worn smooth from years of rubbing plates. I was getting really concerned the place was barely getting by with no money for maintenance. I haven't been there since probably 2021.nebugeater wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 3:40 pmWhen I worked a couple of miles from there, we did a good number of lunches there. The food has always been good. I suppose the menu is a little old fashioned, but I think that's sort of their thing at this point. If you tried to modernize Johnny's you'd ruin it. Their braised Ox Joints on Tuesdays are amazing.

Along with all the "vintage" things you mention, at least when I was working nearby and going fairly often, most of the staff was vintage also. That was a good thing and part of the charmChadJK wrote: Fri Feb 27, 2026 5:17 pmI was getting a little worried about the place for awhile there.
