Looking for recommendations on a really good stout bear, one that's a little less coffee and rye and more a little more chocolate, brown sugar and molasses. Thank you.

Local beer or any beer? Might be in trouble if you are looking for local. Upstream, Lucky Bucket and Zipline all have oatmeal stouts, but that's the only thing non-coffee coming to mind right now.
I do like coffee stouts, but I also like a good traditional stout with a nice grain/earthy taste and they are just not many out there right now.

Thanks. Doesn't have to be local. I like Kros Strain a lot. I saw they have a stout that is about 15 ABV
I'm guessing it probably pretty good but I'm pretty sure you have to go to the source to get it. Kinda just looking for something on the sweeter side I guess, something different from Guinness.

Maybe look for obsidian stout from Deschutes brewing out of Bend, Oregon. Usually, you can find it at a lot of grocery stores and bottle shops and it’s a pretty solid standard stout from what I remember. While it is a big national brewery, it is independently owned, and they treat their employees very well.
The 15% from Kros Strain is probably one of their barrel aged beers with that kind of ABV.

Outside of oatmeal, I'm not a big fan of adjuncts like coffee in stouts or over done excessively high abv. bourbon imperial stouts. It can be hard to find craft stouts without coffee added. I'm not sure if it's even available here but Fremont does a very affordable 8% oatmeal stout called Dark Star. Locally, Brickway does Bella Diva, a 6.8% chocolate stout. It's full, rich, yet bitter enough. It's quite a bit sweeter than Guinness but kept somewhat in check by dark chocolate like bitterness. I find it like-able for the style. I'll second Sam Smith and Obsidian, which is best on Nitro. You might also consider some porters for the flavor profile you're looking for. They are generally less bitter and often a little sweeter. Bell's and Founder's both make solid straight up porters which you can find locally. Deschutes also does Black Butte Porter which is also ideal on nitro. I've always been a fan of Fuller's London Porter, which is rich and decidedly bitter for a porter. Not sure if you can get that one here however.

My two favorite stouts:
Hardywood Gingerbread Stout
Samuel Smith Organic Chocolate Stout
The Hardywood one is local from here in Virginia but you might be able find it elsewhere, not sure. It's considered world class by several places. The Samuel Smith one is very highly rated and can be found everywhere.

Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Stout is one of my all time favorites and tastes so good on draft.
I'll also give a shoutout to Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic Porter that I've recently started drinking. I think I need to stick to stouts and porters for NA since they seem to get as close to the real thing as anything else I've had.

Lumen Beer in Little Bohemia has a great milk stout called Sunday Spins. Idk if it’s still on tap but real good, sweet, but not too sweet flavor. They do have a porter too, named, Porchata, that’s real solid dark if you end up going porter style.

Bell's Expedition Stout is solid as well and you might be able to find it locally.

The last time I had it on draft was Wilson and Washburn. There are other places that sell it in a can, but it truly tastes better from a keg.thenewguy wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2026 2:46 pmwhere does one acquire belching beaver peanut butter stout?Stan wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2026 1:15 pm Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Stout is one of my all time favorites and tastes so good on draft.

I don't think of oatmeal as an adjunct. While technically it probably is, its just oats and to me its no different than barley, rye, wheat, corn, etc. As far as I know oat use is more about the feel than the flavor? Even some of the more popular New England IPA's brew with oats too.
Speaking of, I forgot about "Stay Oatful" from full fledged brewing, its really good, but not available in Omaha anymore, but on tape at the Brewery in Council Bluffs.
