Yeah, I think 72nd is supposed to start construction either this winter or early next spring. I don't think they will be able to fully shut down the road like 42nd but even if they keep two lanes open it will be a headache.

Just an extra lane to F for now. They have a separate plan tied to the 72nd & L Street bridge replacement that will extend it to L Street. That doesn't happen until around 2028.

A construction project is planned for 2024 on the 72nd Street bridge near Interstate 80 in Omaha.

Construction starts in two weeks. Northbound will be closed for the year.

Phase 1 construction is planned to begin on Monday, March 18th, 2024. During Phase 1, 72nd Street northbound will be closed at L Street for through traffic. See detour below. Local access to businesses between L Street and F Street will remain open. Phase 1 construction is expected to last through the end of 2024.

Phase 2 construction is planned to begin in early 2025. During Phase 2, 72nd Street will have one lane open to traffic in each direction through the construction zone. Phase 2 construction is expected to last through the fall of 2025.

Construction to start on south 72nd street bridge next month



A major construction project starts next week in Omaha and it won't end until fall of next year. It affects the bridge over South 72nd Street and businesses are already bracing for impact. The goal is to improve the bridge. Public Works said it's old and in need of repairs. Businesses in the area said they expect to see a lot of congestion.

"It's really an integral part of the city so that's going to be tough to watch," Business Owner Bill Marion said. During the first phase, 72nd Street northbound will be closed at L Street for through traffic. Northbound 72nd Street will be closed from F to I-80. This phase is expected to last until the end of the year.

I was just in that area, I just decided to take 60th all the way to Q since I wasn't sure of the status of the 72nd bridge, or 72nd & L.

Its pretty well a double wammy of construction. We've all had to jog over to 60th or 84th for what seems like a year or more. For my purposes, if 72nd and L is closed or is a nightmare anyway, I'm just going to continue jumping over to 60th or 84th. Been mighty inconvenient. Glad I don't make that trip every day at least.

They are forced to stop working every time a train comes by and they said there were more trains than expected.

Shouldn't the number of trains be scheduled, predictable, and repeatable within a reasonable margin of variability? Find it hard to believe that, if planned correctly, there are "more than expected".

I agree, it is almost laughable at the the excuses that construction delays come up with sometimes. In Bellevue, they have been rebuilding 36th st since 2019 and it still has at least another year to go. I understand that covid happened but to rebuild a stretch of road that is only 3-4 mi long shouldn't take 7 years. The truth is, they are hardly ever working on it. So many days with perfect weather go by and not a single construction worker on site....but when its raining, somehow they magically appear and try to scramble to get anything done.

No, the only truly schedule trains in North America are passenger trains and that line has zero passenger trains. There are some regular freight trains, but they never follow the exact schedule. The other "Problem" is that the Union Pacific mainline splits in Fremont and Missouri Valley. Trains on the mainline can come through Omaha or go through Blair. Generally they try to run higher priority trains and most westbound trains through Blair and lower priority and eastbound trains through Omaha, but that varies based on traffic and track maintenance. Also trains that originate in the Council Bluffs yard generally start working at the same time every day, but depending on the number of cars and how long it takes to build the train, when they actually leave the yards can vary.

Well thats "good" I guess. But like I said in the L Street thread, with that project starting, it really makes no real world difference to me that this will be done soon. Ill continue to avoid 72nd to get south til whenever that L street intersection is done. Hard to believe by the time that comes around, Ill have not been on 72nd south of I-80 for effectively 3 years.

They finally got the concrete finished in the median and all three northbound lanes over this new bridge are open. However, the southbound lanes are still down to one lane and also they started ripping out some other concrete near the exit ramp from eastbound I 80 just this morning.

Sometimes they pour temporary concrete or asphalt and and id assume they are removing the temporary pavement now and will put a curb back in.
