This is one of the more mismanaged projects. I would like to hear the city's retro on this one.

This is not in the Omaha City limits. I'm assuming its being built to city standards, its not a city project.

Also, it looks like they need a bridge or a culvert down at the bottom of the hill, so that could be while they closed it completely and didn't keep one lane open during construction.

That could be true - they also had to do that near our home on 180th & Giles when they built a bridge over the BNSF/Amtrak rail line. However, even with that project, I feel it was done in less time.

I just find it odd that given the resources at their disposal (be it county, state, city, federal, etc) I feel they haven't been full speed ahead on this at all.

To add to this, this is a Douglas County project.

There is a culvert that they were working on until just recently, but it looks like that is done now and they've been laying dirt and grading the whole westbound lanes stretch.

Seems like they are getting ready to pour the road soon although there's no sign of the slipform paver yet. But I would guess they'll do it sometime this month, which makes me surprised they recently pushed out the completion to September. But I guess they also have the median/turn lanes and it looks like the north side might need a retaining wall.

Like I said in a previous post, I think the utility work is what really delayed this and the recent news release hints at that. There's been long periods of little to nothing being done. While there were frequent periods of rain last year that it looked like caused the ground to be too wet to where they had to wait for it to dry out, a big thing I noticed is that there were utility poles blocking work on the westbound lanes. There was even one pole in the middle of the eastbound lanes that prevented them from completing a small stretch that they eventually did some kind of temporary relocation before the end of last year so they could complete it.

They didn't even start putting up the replacement poles on the south side of the street until early December and the old ones on the north side were finally removed towards the middle of February. Once that was done, work really started to pick up. So my guess is these utility pole relocations were supposed to happen much earlier and was for some reason pushed back.

At work, I would consider this a fill-in project. Only work on it when all other projects are up to speed.

It looks like they've been starting to put down a base layer and I think I see the slipform paver at the east end. They just may start pouring the westbound lanes this week.

Not over there a lot, but unless I am mistaken, this is not 100% closed. That is where the Q Street wins the award.

The other day it looked like it is mostly paved but still needed a lot of dirt moved or a decent sized retaining wall on the north side.

A bit off topic but 48th St between Q St. and Harrison St. has been closed going on 2 years now. Not near as much traffic on that street but still has been a pain the butt for a lot of people. Hopefully both of these projects will wrap up soon.

Here is the timeline that I pulled from reviewing this thread

Q St from 192 to 204 project started in April of 2025
The original completion estimate was Fall 2025.
Then in Oct it was updated to Spring of 2026,
Then they said Aug 2026
In May, it got pushed to Sept 26
Now it was moved to October 2026

I love how Pfitzer blames the streetcar for the delay with utilities but then OPPD and MUD come out and basically say that's not the case, we just suck

They were supposed to be finished with utilities last year (along with the whole project). How can MUD say finishing most of it this spring is not the reason for the delay? :problem:

There's no legitimate reason this should have take as long as it did considering they shut down both directions the entire time. Engineers, planners, crews... they call all point their fingers at the other one, but it definitely COULD have been done sooner.

This was only a mile of road. They better get started on widening 180th and 192nd between Dodge and Q St now if they hope to have it done before 2040.

Both 180th and 192nd need to be 2 lanes each way, with a turn lane in between. IMMEDIATELY, if not sooner.

1000% agree - I'm assuming costs are the reason they do not build these roads this way to start with. IMO, that's a total fail. Now both roads are heavily used and will require large disruptions to widen. I thought 180th was coming soon as they removed several large trees between Pacific and Center St, but I think it's still a few years out.

180th & Pacific is a nightmare - it often times gets backed up all the way to Center to the south. Due to the fact there are no turn lanes along that stretch, there are often times accidents or near accidents because of sudden stops.

I'm surprised they widened Q St East/West at 180th to 192nd about 20 years ago and are now trying to finish 192nd to 204th... Harrison is another road that needs 2 lanes each way out to 204th. Dropping the 7 Brew Coffee at 168th & Harrison in the next few months will cause nothing but headaches since it's 1 lane each way.

Its not that simple.
-Omaha can't widen those roads until the roads are inside the city limits.
-The Un-Annexed SID's do kick in money to widen the roads to the 3 lane sections.
-Douglas County works with the SID's to get the gravel roads upgraded to the 3 lane section and improves intersections.
-Neither the SIDs or the County will spend money on widening a road now when traffic counts don't currently justify it.
-Usually Douglas County doesn't has any interest in expanding a road to 5 lanes now when Omaha will just annex it sooner than later.
-Nebraska DOT wont kick in money until traffic counts justify the expansion.

Q Street wasn't widened 20 years ago, 2016 aerials show it under construction, so 9-10 years ago.

Other un-widened roads with unannexed SID's :
The Grove neighborhood west of 180th and north of Pacific isn't annexed yet.
Grove Ridge and Evert Place between Dodge and Pacific on 192nd Street isn't' annexed yet.
Shadow View west of 192nd Street is not annexed
Omaha has annexed nothing south of center and west of 192nd street.
Its kind of the same on the north side, almost nothing is annexed north of Maple and west of 180th.

Interestingly, it's Douglas County doing this project. They also did 180th north of Dodge to Maple. I've actually wondered why they ended up taking these stretches when Omaha is likely going to annex it in the next few years and "steal" it from them. But it makes sense that Omaha can only widen roads within city limits and may be why Douglas County did those projects instead.

The county tends to usually do just 3 lane roads because there is so many rural 2 lanes roads needing some kind of upgrade and they don't have the funds to make them all 4 lanes. 30 years ago they left them 2 lanes until they were ready for 4 but learned that a lack of turn lanes causes traffic to be a mess as the areas get built up before they can be addressed.

It was originally announced as happening this year or next year but was pushed back to around 2030.

I lived off 186th & Q for 17 years (from 2002 to 2019) and could have sworn Q St was widened prior to 2016 because the retail on the SW corner of 180th & Q wasn't there until the road had been widened (if I'm not mistaken).

Regardless, your comments provide some information that helps a bit... it's still a dumb excuse to not widen the roads. Money should be able to come from somewhere given the sky high property taxes we all pay.

Anyway, it's nice to see them move the completion date out another couple of months and yet no one seems to fess up to the reasons why. Typical govt BS.

If you live in Douglas county you can easily look at your taxes. I’d assume Sarpy has something similar. That said, in Douglas County, most taxes go to the schools.

Fort St between 108th & 120th is a good example of a road that was expanded too soon. For years it sat underutilized, and now that it’s getting the traffic it was built for, it needed to be redone.

Started posting about this last week but got distracted and forgot until just now - Q St closed from 204th to 205th St this past Monday to do that portion of the intersection. Supposed to be closed until late fall, which likely means early December.

https://engineer.douglascounty-ne.gov/w ... -205th.pdf

The good news is the portion east of 204th St looks pretty close now. The sidewalks are close to being done and they are almost done with the medians too - they started to seed them today. There's still a retaining wall to be built by one of the large power lines, but it looks like rebar has already been put in place.

My guess is 192nd to 204th will open in the next couple weeks. Hopefully...

Also noticed that dcengineer.org got a new look (and address).

Just think - if they're able to open before the end of September, they can twist that story into being finished early (compared to their latest update on delays).
