Hoping the mall and city are trying to work with AMC on upgrading their facility. With the other investments going on around there they should ask AMC to upgrade their screens/seats/facilities. Malls and premium theatres just go well together IMO and the location is prime.

Maybe this could be a partnership where the city builds more city-owned parking garages. Build them right along the access/ring road. Then it frees up surface lots for strong infill. I'm not talking about free standing single use, but mixed-use with density. Think of it as the current mall as "inner mall" and the new development as "outer mall."

I bet they have and it just hasn't penciled out with current demand. The one parking deck they do have was added in the late 1990s or early 2000s around the time they were undergoing a significant expansion with Galyan's/Dicks, Rave/AMC, and the various restaurants on outlots. The current market is probably maxed out.

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it. One the one hand, it's converting underutilized parking directly into medium-density housing. On the other, it looks a bit clunky.

Nice! That part of Chicagoland was my primary stomping grounds when I lived in the western burbs and continued to be during the work day after I moved to the City. That hotel was quite fascinating to me when I first moved there from Omaha. Having a towering, 4-star hotel next to a mall in the suburbs was a quirk of megalopolis living I wasn't familiar with.

And speaking of Yorktown Mall. One of its outlots is a cemetery: https://maps.app.goo.gl/xCFEnfbmVgkX1oWLA. So, as an alternative to multi-use buildings at Westroads, they could always do a cemetery...

Good point. Ive had this thought before too, but never liked it because it would be hard for a grid-like development to look good with all those curvy roads out there. Raze the dang ol Granite city, rebuild the transit center, and put like a 10 story apartment building with a small park next to it. I think the draw would be the transit access moreso than being by the mall.

Even getting a single parking garage would be a major improvement. The current parking stalls are so narrow, most cars barely fit.

Even though the original thread is seven years old, such a project could still be a good addition to W.R. In that thread, Cowboy stated about 3.5 years ago it could still be alive. Consider the original rumor started at the beginning of Covid. Obviously not a good time for this type of project to take root.

Fast forward to current times with Crossroads finally getting off the ground and Cannibal One gorging on nearby Regency. Dillard's is already looking like notable boost for Westroads and the timing may be right in the near future for an adjacent upscale mixed use development.

In regard to those renderings, it could be a nice focal point sitting at a pinnacle elevation and good architectural counter balance for Schwab.
