UNO's $35 million renovation of Durham Science Center set to begin in March

A $35 million renovation of the Durham Science Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is set to begin in March.

Despite the price tag, the two-year project involves improvements that will likely go unnoticed once work is finished.

Sacha Kopp, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNO, said the renovation will essentially be an infrastructure upgrade to a building that has seen only minor touch-ups since it opened in 1987.

The renovation is expected to be completed in April 2024, according to the Board of Regents document.

UNO partners with United Airlines to bring Aviate program to young pilots

Becoming a pilot for a major airline is no easy task, but it is a dream that UNO student Garrett Ferguson has had since he was a kid.

“I grew up across the street from the Lincoln airport in Lincoln, Nebraska. I would always see the planes flying overhead and as a kid that was one of the coolest thing you know. Just getting to look up and see planes flying over you. You think that is really something cool I could get into,” said Garret

Thankfully for Ferguson, there is a huge demand for his dream job.

Consulting firm Oliver Wyman estimated earlier this year that the industry is facing a shortage of nearly 8,000 pilots and that shortage is only continuing to grow.

One major airline has partnered with a select group of universities across the country to keep flights in the air to find the most talented young pilots to add to their rosters, and that partnership has now made its way to Omaha.

“It's a great boost and it's really a win-win for the industry and UNO. We know we have a pilot supply issue isn't the industry now so the airlines are coming to us now looking for the top talent and we are happy to provide it,” said Dr. Becky Lutte, associate professor with UNO’s Aviation Institute.

Through the program, United is able to find potential pilots through UNO, and other participating universities, and offer a conditional job. Students get training through the program and do not have to go through additional interviews/hiring process once they get into the Aviate program. There have been a lot of changes in the aviation education sphere in the metro and this is another nice step forward.

Interesting there are liquor license requests before the city council next week for UNO. The one for Canagilia Field makes sense as they sell alcohol at other athletic venues, but one for the student union is a bit puzzling.

When I was in high school I toured Regis Uni in Denver (a very small private catholic college) and they had a full bar in their student center. I will add that I won’t be surprised when the day after mr Osborne passes UNL slams the gas on alcohol sales.

DePaul has a bar in the basement of the business college/law school. It is catered toward the biz/law students (TVs played Bloomberg TV, not sports). Does feel like a difference between that in the heart of the loop and a bar in the UNO student union. Not necessarily against it, just an interesting decision.

It's been a while since I was a student at UNO, but they periodically had luncheons, lectures, and other events at the student center. At the time, the administration was adamant that the campus remain dry. Perhaps student drinking has fallen to a level that permits the use of alcohol in some spaces.

That and like someone else mentioned, they've had it at athletic venues for some time (you could go all the way back to UNO at the Civic for hockey, or start with the opening of Baxter Arena). Plus with their Ak Sar Ben Campus, alcohol is mixed right in with the private development there.

UNL is headed in this direction too. They now have it at PBA for basketball. I don't know if it was approved but at one point it was discussed to possibly have it at the volleyball event Wednesday. Assuming if it did we'd have heard more on it. I actually look for it to be added permanently to Memorial Stadium with the upcoming major renovations. The survey they did with football season ticket holders had tons of questions on alcohol in Memorial Stadium.

UNO athletic officials are campaigning for a new basketball/volleyball/athletic practice facility next to Baxter Arena. That would also house the Maverick athletic offices.

Also potentially included: clubhouses for both baseball and softball

I still hope they end up building that campus housing building they talked about on the East Side berm of the soccer pitch.

Eventually, I forsee infill on both the east berms and where the former North football stands were. They won't touch the Pep Bowl though. That seems to be protected ground.
