After a few decades of what may or may not have been "an agreement" between Krogers and HyVee not to encroach on each others turf in Missouri and Kansas with the KC Metro being HyVee territory, Krogers is making a move back in to the market. Dillons (The Kansas Kroger chain) is building a Dillons Marketplace store in Olathe, KS, a 100,000 Dillons store and gas station in Kansas City, MO Northland, converting a closed JC Penny store into a regular Dillons in Independence and is negotiating in Lee Summit, MO.
Previously, the closest to KC were the Leavenworth, KS and four Lawrence, KS Dillons stores.
Currently, there are only three HyVee stores in Kansas that are outside of the KC Metro. One each in Lawrence, Topeka and Manhattan.
6 Existing Central Missouri Kroger stores fall under the Gerbes banner, which is part of the Dillons Division of Krogers, as are Bakers Supermarkets.
Added note: I live in Hutchinson, KS, the HQ of the Dillons Division, and find it kind of cool to see among the hundred or so semi trailers at the warehouses at any time frequently include Bakers, Food for Less, Ralphs, Smiths and King Soopers.

Dillons just replaced one of their Lawrence stores (close to KU's campus) with a new much larger store. Hy Vee used to have 2 stores in Lawrence but closed one of them about 5 years ago and is down to one. I think these new Dillons stores in KC will do very well. The new one in Lawrence is fantastic.
