Omaha hosting FIVB World Cup matches in 2027

Post by Greg S »

Omaha will host matches in one of the biggest events in international volleyball next year.

The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) announced Thursday that CHI Health Center Arena will host pool play and the Round of 16 in the 2027 Women’s Volleyball World Cup, marking the first time the tournament has been held in North America — with the United States and Canada as host nations.

This is big new for international volleyball fans. The event formerly called "The World Championships" recently changed its name to the Volleyball World Cup. There used to be another event every four years called the FIVB World Cup, but it ended when the World Championships changed from being once every four years to every two years. It will also be the final chance to qualify for the Olympics. Among the teams that didn't already qualify, the top three will get their ticket to the Olympics. I previously attended this event in Asia where it has been held many years.

that's huge news! I wish the streetcar was rolling by then, but the airport will be basically ready and Drury should be done/about done, and i'm sure the rooms will be booked out far in advance

I like that Omaha (and Nebraska as a whole) is leaning into becoming almost a cultural center for volleyball in general.

I wonder if we had the 800-1000 room anchor hotel would we have had a shot at the semi/finals?

The Cultural Center for Volleyball is about 60 miles west of Omaha and then extends to the rest of Nebraska, including Omaha

Most volleyball fans in Lincoln and Nebraska are Nebraska volleyball fans and are knowledgeable about other top NCAA teams and players. Volleyball fans in other volleyball-crazy countries such as Thailand, Japan, China, and Poland tend to be fans of national teams and are familiar with top teams and players from other national teams. For example, in China this past summer, the VNL finals (which didn't include China's team) were broadcast live on China's equivalent of ESPN.
