So glad to hear the continued success here. I always thought this building looked like an eyesore when driving south on 10th St.

Cafe Postale opens in historic former Burlington mail terminal

Cafe Postale now is open in the former Burlington mail terminal south of the Old Market.

The street-level restaurant is a partnership between chef Nathan Newhouse and the Commerce Village co-working space in the century-old Rail & Commerce Building at 950 S. 10th St. It was set to open as Cafe Postino in late February 2020 with different chefs, but the coronavirus pandemic altered that plan

Cafe Postale is closing permanently November 30th.
Cafe Postale wrote:After much thought and consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to permanently close Cafe Postale. Our last day of service will be November 30, 2026.
This is certainly not the ending we had hoped for, but we are incredibly grateful for everything this little café has become.
From morning coffee runs and lunch dates to celebrations, conversations, and familiar faces walking through our doors, Cafe Postale has been so much more than just a place to grab a bite. It’s been a place for people to gather, connect, and make memories.
To our incredible team, our loyal guests, and the community that has supported us along the way — thank you. You’ve made Cafe Postale something truly special, and we couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve created together.
We still have a little time left, and we’d love nothing more than to spend it with you! Stop in for your favorite coffee, enjoy one more lunch, and help us celebrate the wonderful memories made within these walls. Please be aware there will be changes to our menu along the way, but we will do our best to keep as much available as possible.
And while this chapter is coming to a close, the story of this beautiful space may be far from over. We’re hopeful that something new and exciting will one day bring fresh energy, new faces, and more memories to this special corner of our community. Stay tuned — we’re excited to see what the next chapter might bring!
With full hearts and endless gratitude, thank you for being part of our story. 🤍
With love,
The Cafe Postale Ownership

That's too bad. I don't make it downtown for Coffee very often, but I really did like this place.

This has to be a tough area to make it. I often wonder how long Via Farina will be able to survive here. It seems there's not enough spill over foot traffic from The Old Market. I don't get the impression that this area gets nearly even the foot traffic of Little Bo. The Blue Barn was a good addition for the neighborhood but still isn't enough of a regular draw. Something like Aksarben Yard happening would surely help. Moreover, it would be nice to see something game changing finally happen at 1100 Pierce St that could help bolster Little Italy. Obviously had the public market came to fruition here that would've been it. I wonder if there'd still be a place for an Italian food hall that could coexist with the coming public market? I know many including myself would love to see some form of an Italian grocer come back. You certainly wouldn't want to be competing with the public market but perhaps in good time this could work as a satellite location that's obviously Italian-centric.

Cafe Postale was not the same caliber of coffee shop as some of the others in the area. Restaurants like Via Farina and Sips seems to be busy as well. I am in the neighborhood and see the foot traffic at these places almost on a daily basis.

The space that Cafe Postale occupies seems to be more suited for a fine dining restaurant than a coffee shop. Something like Au Curant or Boiler Room would do really well here, given the proximity to downtown, Durham, and Blue Barn.

That's good to hear regarding foot traffic. Every time I'm in the area it's always dicey as a pedestrian crossing the street but during what I would think is peak hours I don't get the sense that most places are as busy. That Burlington place regardless of name/ownership never seems to have people in it.

Interesting idea about the Cafe Postale space. If there were a high end restaurant there, you could still have a similar breakfast/coffee place during the AM hours. Nicer, suedo fine dining places tend to operate limited evening hours and the space seems large enough to accommodate both.

I mean they do have good coffee, it's just their snack options are very limited. If they had more food options like sandwiches not just bite size snacks, people would have a reason to go there. I went there in the past but would accept the limitations.

That's why I prefer Lola's, they have very delicious food and coffee.

Good observation. Lola's would be the perfect model for this location. Coffee and breakfast in the morning with upscale lunch and finer dining later in the day.
