Less than six months after Bass Pro Shops opened in Council Bluffs, the metro area has a reeled in a second whopper of an outdoor retailer with Sidney, Neb.-based Cabela's breaking ground Thursday in La Visa.

Certainly the smallest market with both stores. Does this solidly establish our position as the red neck capital of the nation?

While at Cabela's, be sure to outfit the kids with action figures.

The building started getting a little hight to it this week as the rebar for columns starting going up.

The First Digs go to Cabela's

A message of "build it and they will come" intertwined through dignitary speeches last Thursday as a crowd gathered in chilly 35-degree weather to welcome a billion-dollar business to La Vista during a ground-breaking ceremony at 12730 Westport Parkway...

The groundbreaking ceremony was timed to coincide with the beginning of foundation work and the 128,000 square-foot store should open by early fall of 2006, said company spokesman, James Powell.

The La Vista store will be constructed following Cabela's unique style of bringing the outdoors inside with museum-quality animals displayed within colorful dioramas and huge aquariums stocked with native fish.

Other attractions at the new store may include a towering mountain replica complete with streams and a trout pond, a deli-style restaurant serving wild-game sandwiches as well as traditional food and a world-class gun library

I don't remembering reading about this restaurant. Maybe I have missed it reading about all the other bells and whistles. Ostrich Parmsan sandwiches?

Parking Lot Plan Advances

An eight-million-dollar La Vista shopping center parking project moves a step closer to reality. The La Vista City Council has voted to put the Southport West project out for bids. The city hopes to wind up with an eleven-acre parking lot with almost 800 spaces for shoppers at the 90-acre Southport West shopping and entertainment complex at Interstate 80 and Harrison Streets. Three hotels and a convention center are planned for the complex, and the outdoor gear, clothing and supplies company Cabela's is building there.

Many of the new developments along Giles - from the interstate to 96th street - are putting these bell shaped lights in. I was looking at them the other day - and there are many different variations of light structures - but the same theme. I was wondering how all these developments could have chosen the same theme - or if was a La Vista city ordinance of sorts that suggested this.

I can't find the article now - but earlier there was an news article about Val Vista and Southwind residents being upset that La Vista has put on hold their annexation because the city has spent so much on Southport. These neighborhoods were supposed to be annexed by now but La Vista will not have the funds to annex any new neighborhoods for a while.

Now that's a turnaround... a subdivision welcoming annexation.

Have to love the reference to this 'parking district' as well. I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with to improve the aesthetics though.

By paying off the SID the subdivision would save money. The article showed how much - I can't remember now.

yeah, in almost every instance I've seen where Omaha has been involved, the SID ends up getting a lower levy after annexation. But there always seems to be a consensus among residents that the sheriff provides better protection, separate fee based trash removal is better, snow removal is better... they'll even drive up debt to attempt to discourage Omaha from annexing them.

I've been annexed twice now... and I've always found the city of Omaha has provided just as good as service as what I had before, but of course at the lower tax rate.

What is a hoot here - is that the new La Vista Police Station is not in La Vista, and the new Fire Station they are building on 96th will not be in La Vista either. Oh well - planning ahead. I know it really doesn't matter for the Fire Department, but I just have to wonder about the jurisdictions for the County Sheriff and the La Vista City Police.

Precast structures usually go up really fast. Most of the work is on the foundation. With that done, all that's left is connecting the slabs, interior, exterior work, and that's it for the most part.

Here is the new Cabellas that just opened in Fort Worth Texas.

After Going to this Cabella's and the one in KC, which are exactly the same layout, then looking at the plans for the Omaha Cabella's, we are getting SCREWED!

How about speaking of the fact that this is their 3rd location in the state of nebraska and being only 2-3 hours from 3 other locations. This is the right size for them. I wish we could have one of the megastores too, but its really not needed with Scheels and Bass Pro in this market now.
