Earl Mays

The Linden Market (NE 132nd & West Dodge) Earl Mays is either closing or relocating - it is up for sale/rent.
They used to be on 132nd & West Center if I am correct. Anyone know of their fate?

The Earl May has been closed for many months now. I believe Brad posted a photo of some work going on there relatively recently.

But:

1) Is Earl May a local company (I haven't researched this)
2) Are they closing down - Do they still have a store in Countryside?
3) Was this the store that was on 132nd & West Center. Are they relocating - again?
4) Who put them out of business?

Maybe I will find this out n the next few seconds.

Earl May is still alive and well... last I looked they still had their locations west of 90th and West Center and in Millard (by the Pizza Machine). The West Dodge store didn't re-locate... it just closed.

I believe they are based out of some small town in Iowa.

Oh Yeah. Thanks for jogging the memory Jeff. I drove past their plant in SW Iowa last year. I forgot about the Millard Pizza Mays. Duh! And the 91st & W Center - that I drive by all the time. I need to support this local venture more. I try to spend my money on places that redistribute my hard earned money locally.

Of course there's Lanoha and Mulhall's (along with several smaller ma and pop nurseries throughout town)... which are locally owned.

I recently had an unfortunate land deal offer with Lanoha on 168th & Harrison.
I shoud not blame him but others - still - for me they are just too...

Earl May is headquartered in Shenandoah, IA (along with Henry Field Seed Co., another large nursery), about an hour southeast of the metro. Earl May was one of the early adopters of radio broadcasting/advertising and started KMA radio (960 AM), which was one of the most popular radio stations in the country for a long time. I believe Earl was a native Nebraskan.

i always thought that the linden market location replaced the earl may that used to be at westroads that closed in the 90s. i think it used to sit where pf changs is now.

Interesting fact about Earl May...they started KMTV way back when. I found an old employee handbook at work and it said that employees of KMTV got the employee discount at all Earl May stores.

The Earl May store at 132nd & Dodge has been closed for over a year now. (I know because we tried to buy geraniums last spring there...)

The garden center at 132nd & Center was Henry Fields; that store closed to make room for Prarie Life.

all my memories of them is that they where hella expensive and small but had cool stuff. infact a store like this would be fun to have in the MTO?DTO area. help us urbanites get in touch with our outdoors side.

im pretty sure there is a nursery on about saddle creek and dodge, or in the area, right off of saddle creek. Not sure what they have in the way of selection, but it is the only one i know of in midtown

Other than baskets to put in windows and houseplants, just what would downtown condo owners buy at a nursery???

I'm not sure there was any particular emphasis on suggesting the needs of downtown condo residents (although you'd be amazed how much can be done on a roof top/within an atrium)... there are plenty of single family dwellings and greenspace in the areas in/surrounding Midtown and Downtown.

The nursery on Saddle Creek is Indian Hills, I believe. That's where they plant all the hanging baskets for the Dundee light poles.
