A new development that combines retail space with adjoining residential condominiums
is breaking ground on the NE corner of 144th and Fort. It will be called Standing Bear Pointe.

......all tucked behind a nice tree covered suburban parking lot. Am I seeing the rendering wrong? I can't wait until the city adopts what the people wanted. Four Corners Style Development.

I have a bad feeling that by the time the city actually gets around to changing this part of the planning code (if they ever do) the county will be full.

The City continues to work with the development community to adopt new rules. Unfortunately, without thier (at least grudging)support they will not fly. As for 4 corners, it isn't going to happen at the intersection like you may be referring simply because the size of the streets prevents it from working. The concept is more of a village point one, creating a worthwhile space away from the arterial street.

If you read through the Omaha By Design guidelines that developers helped to write (very important I might add) you will see that 4 corners style development will be found on roads like Fort, Center, Q, etc....

I remember reading that even though they had agreed to it they were lobbying very hard against it's adoption. I think this is the last thing that has yet to be adopted. In my opinion the rest of the omaha by design guidelines are nice but essentially worthless without this one piece. We will never have mass transit in the western 2/3 of the city without this. Sad very sad!!!

This is also a piece that is very hard to implement later. Not just because buildings are built away from the road. Although it would be more costly to right a wrong, I would argue that redesigning those interesections would be the easiest thing to do. It is convincing the populace that doing so isn't going to bring the dreaded speeding cars, vagrants, and the plague that is the hardest thing to do. Why is everyone so scared of change in this country?

I sure hope I am wrong about this!!

There is already a small strip mall on the SE corner of this intersection. I can't remember all that is in it but I think an insurance agency office and a Veternarian office. They torn down a house that was on the NW corner a while back. On the NE corner there is a larger piece of property with a street running through it. The SW corner has a housing development

It does seem like they're rolling. Sign up this morning about a coffee place there. Not sure if that's part of the cheesecake deal or separate. Also something called Aqua Tots going in.

That sounds either like a potato soup restaurant, or water park for kids.

Yeah it's some swimming thing for kids.

The Cheesecake place is open and they have a coffee shop in the cheesecake place as well. Need to advertise out here. I had to drive by the store to see if open. More construction is going on in other bays as well.
