The Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America has listed the top 10 spring allergy cities in the country. In years past, most of the worst cities for allergies have been in the Southeast, but this year several northern cities top the list.
The AAFA 2006 spring allergy capitals are:
Hartford, Conn.
Greenville, S.C.
Boston
Detroit
Orlando, Fla.
Knoxville, Tenn.
Omaha, Neb.
Sacramento, Calif.
Washington, D.C.
Baltimore
The listings are based on pollen counts, medication use per capita and the number of board-certified allergists in the area.
It used to be the Phoenix area. But then people kept importing grasses and flowering plants... I think that the city enacted a ban against certain new imports.
So basically what yall are telling me is to go underground or where it is cold as a .... well never mind........ LOL I bet Antartica doesn't have any allergens.
I actually love this time of year have been out planting a few things and doing a bit of yard work.
The whole valley areound Phoenix has very strict rules on vegetation. When you build a new house (or, well, anything) on previously untouched land, you have to excavate, move, maintain and replant all the vegetation you disrupted during construction.
OMAHA, Neb. (FOX 42 KPTM) — On Tuesday, the weather in the metro was clear, bright and cool. A great change from the recent cold weather. Since the cold weather is moving out the trees, grass and flowers are popping up. This also means pollen and allergies. This kind of weather is great but for some people it can be a problem. "What’s going on right now is we’re in tree season and this time of year typically we would be going into the late trees and out of the early trees but because of the cold weather we had earlier in the season early trees like cedar have been really high these last two weeks," said Dr. G. Daniel Brooks from The Asthma and Allergy Center in Bellevue.
If you are having allergies at this time of year according to Dr. G. Daniel Brooks from The Asthma and Allergy Center in Bellevue it’s probably from the tree pollen. There is also a possibility it could be from smoke residue from the recent wildfires too. Dr. Brooks said just because you can't see the smoke in the air doesn't mean it's not there. If you are sneezing, coughing, have a runny nose, watery or itchy eyes Dr. Brooks suggest using some over the counter medicine to help with those symptoms. In the coming weeks Dr. Brooks said the current trees will go away but more trees like mulberry will pop up and those trees put out a lot of pollen.
PAPILLION, Neb. (KMTV) — A mostly empty dog park didn’t stop Lou Sloger and his dog Sasha from a springtime game of fetch, for them it’s routine despite his springtime allergies. "The most annoying thing is itchy eyes," Sloger said. He’s not alone, many suffer this time of year, and as the flowers bloom, so do symptoms. Dr. Jill Poole, an allergist with Nebraska Medicine says tree pollen is to blame and right now we’re in the thick of it. "Some trees will keep pollinating throughout the summer, but April is pretty much the worst time for tree pollen suffers," Poole said.
