I doubt that. Wal-Mart is too huge to even notice it on their radar. Unless Omaha wants them to have solid gold walls and even then I would assume they still may consider it.
More what I meant was keep insisting on revised designs until they look up and realize it's 2056.

No actually I am very serious. If it weren't for that horrendous development, the citizens, developers, city planners, etc.... would never have joined together to form Omaha By Design. Apprarently this is what it took to get people mad enough to take the law into their own hands!! So a big thanks goes out to John Boy and the rest of the Waltons!!

Oh, well, you made it sound like you liked it! Gah!

Anyway, Omaha by Design was already in progress when this happened, and the city did force changes to the buildings. But yeah, I see your point - Fool us once, wal mart sucks. Fool us again, shame on us.

A 'greener' Wal-Mart design
Wal-Mart officials are touting their latest design for the proposed Supercenter northwest of 72nd and Hickory Streets - the site of Omaha's old Ranch Bowl - as one of the most "progressive" and "unique" in the Midwest.

It looks like they are trying to hide the fact that it is a walmart with those trees, don’t blame them though.

WOW it sure takes a lot of terraces and landscape buffers to hide a Wal-Mart in the city!

That's pathetic that Wal-Mart is showing off their "most progressive and unique design for the midwest." Wow, all they are doing is adding trees and landscaped buffers.

I hate that attitude Wal-Mart has regarding this. "You won't find any better design for a commercial building anywhere in Omaha."??? God they are being such |expletive| |expletive| |expletive| |expletive| |expletive| |expletive| |expletive| |expletive| condescending |expletive| |expletive| |expletive| |expletive| |expletive| heads!

That's got to be a record for the most |expletives| in one post!!

But I agree - these walmart folks are just two-bit developers. No creativity, imagination, or vision...

Fight brews with test of design group

A Wal-Mart planned in south-central Omaha is emerging as the first real test of how far the city is willing to push developers to beautify new commercial buildings.

A fight is brewing over the design of the proposed Supercenter near 72nd Street and West Center Road. It's a fight that could fracture the three-year-old coalition of interests that until now have stood united in a broader effort to raise local building design standards.

A private group called Omaha By Design is leading that broader effort in cooperation with developers and the Fahey administration. New zoning codes are to be proposed later this year.
If Wal-Mart can't live with those demands and pulls out, so be it, says Connie Spellman, director of Omaha By Design.

"We have set a new standard for Omaha," said Wal-Mart spokesman Ryan Horn, who grew up in Omaha.

What Omaha are they talking about?

I thought this was interesting
To acknowledge the area's history, Wal-Mart has agreed to design its new Pella supercenter with a Dutch flair.

The 99,704-square-foot store will be adorned with a Dutch-style stepped-gabled entryway, earth-toned concrete masonry and simulated stucco. It will have a saddle roof, Dutch cornices and arched accents over the windows. Landscaping in front of the store will feature tulip gardens and crabapple trees.
It wasn't necessarily voluntary - Pella established mandatory design standards for businesses in the 1980s, said City Administrator Mike Nardini.

What I don't understand is when Wal-Mart said, " Wal-Mart says it is being asked to do more than the new Target under construction at 72nd and Dodge Streets. "It's a plain building with a red stripe," Wal-Mart's Horn said of the Target building."

Anyone that has seen the Target going up at Crossroads can clearly tell it's not a plain building with a red stripe. I think it's a great design and they did it without fighting Omaha.

The Target also wasn't a new development, so likely not subject to the same rules.

Omaha Board approves Wal-Mart at Ranch Bowl site

The Omaha Planning Board Wednesday unanimously recommended approval of plans for a Wal-Mart at the former Ranch Bowl site. Neighbors were unhappy with the decision of the board to approve plans for the supercenter on 72nd and Hickory Streets, saying such a large, 24-hour store does not fit in the neighborhood.

I read the article and am okay with many of the things people wanted WalMart to do. However, the fact remains that they are a business and that business is not pissing away money just to look nice.

Yet, I literally laughed when I read: "Regarding demands from neighbors to downsize the store from 221,000 square feet to 43,000 square feet, Bozeman was adamantly opposed."

How arrogant to expect the store to be willing to build something less than 20% the size they want. Why not just demand they scale it down to a convenient store?

-If you are so sure that is the wishes of their customers, I am MORE than willing to lay odds that they have ZERO problem making money there (as a result of meeting their customer wishes). basically, you think they should respect the wishes of people that would not shop there any way.

I think the next location the Mart opens up should be 1/5th of the size of their other two locations.

I have no problem people asking them to scale back. But asking them to scale back 80% is flat out arrogance and stupidity at its worst (who honestly expects ANY company to say okay to that?).

Perhaps, but this way they are guranteeing that those people won't shop there, where as the likely would have if walmart humored the wishes of their neighbors.

Can you imagine if someone moved into your neighborhood, painted their house like this:

Try and tell me you wouldn't be upset off. Well WalMart is doing the equivalent to their neighbors.

WalMart is arrogant and culturally insensitive. It's why people have no problem with Target (even though they are very similar operations), Target takes pride in it's appearance and makes sure the neighbors are happy, instead of just |expletive| slapping them and forcing them to accept what they don't want.

-Didn't see this earlier. You act like WalMart goes to people's houses, points guns to their heads, and forces them to shop there.

WalMart is a VERY successful company. They KNOW what people want and realize they are in the business of giving people want they want. You are just upset that you want more and Wal Mart realizes you are simply the vocal TINY minority. Rather than turning your anger to WalMart for providing the MAJORITY of people with what the want, turn your anger to your fellow citizens who are not as demanding as you.

Finally, realize WalMart is a business in a free enterprise society. If their stores were so bad and they really "|expletive|-slapped" people, not only would they not be anywhere near as successful as they are, they would most likely be out of business.

Sadly most people live in Hollywood's created conspiracy theory world where we are all brain-washed to do what we have no desire to do by the big bad multi-national corporations. WalMart is NOT providing a commodity (like utilities). People have PLENTY of options to speak with their wallets and they do it every day.

WalMart panders to the worse aspects of our society...the greasy, bloated, gimme gimme, me me me attitudes.

They're a greedy institution with no social conscious.

-I am a very happy person. In fact, my whole point is EXACTLY the same as yours. It appears a lot of people on here want to whine and bash companies because they are giving the majority of people what they want. I understand they are frustrated and want things to change. However, their time would be better spent rallying support for their cause then simply making flat out stupid demands of companies. Asking Walmart to make their store 20-30% smaller is a reasonable request that has a hope of happening. Asking them to cut their store size by 80% is flat out stupid and unreasonable.

The WalMart discussions were quite interesting and in the end Omaha is getting about all we could given the position we are in today. A couple of years from now we might be in a stronger position. Generally, however, all its ever about it how to dress up the box and how to obscure it with green.

WalMart is a concept that panders to greed, laziness and sloth
I'm not a huge WM supporter but some would say its convenience and value.
