New UNMC Hospital Announced for Bellevue

The Bellevue Leader has a breaking news story, that the Nebraska Medical Center will build a new hospital at 25th & 370 in Bellevue.

The Nebraska Medical Center has announced plans to build a hospital in Bellevue on the strength of a growing community, a base hospital closure and major investments by local physicians.

"I'm kind of surprised that nobody has done it," said Cindy Arbaugh, project administrator working with UNMC. "I just think Bellevue has really come into its own."

The $58 million hospital and $90-million project will be located at the southwest corner of Highway 370 and 25th Street. Groundbreaking is set for this fall, with an anticipated opening in October 2008. Other buildings will include medical clinics on site.

* Is it a full hospital? Yes. The biggest services are emergency care, obstetrics, inpatient and outpatient surgery, intensive care, cardiac catheterization, a pharmacy, radiology and lab testing.

* How big is it? 200,000 square feet, 60 in-patient and observation beds (could add 60 more beds in the near future).

* What's the cost? $58 million for hospital construction, entire project could be $90 million.

* When do we start? Groundbreaking is set for later this year. The campus is expected to open in October 2008.

* What's the impact? Estimated $5 million to $7 million in new state and local tax revenue.

looks like a pretty nice facility I don't blame them for building down there since the area is certainly going to grow.

is the something a bout these places that makes them more efficient or somehow function better if they are mid-rises and not campuses? every facility i can think of that is new is multiple floors in an area the suburbs that is known for campuses. heck even the grand island thing is 5-floors.

It's easier to move gurneys (sp?) quickly up a few levels in an elevator than it is to push one down a hall for 6 blocks.

-Wasn't this old news? If not, sorry. My wife works at a Doctor's office in the area and I knew about this months ago. I will try to be more proactive in posting in the rumors area.

I don't know if it was ever posted (I don't know why), however it wasn't that big of a secret, infact I think some people on this forum heard about it before.

Even the article mentions that the idea has been floated before. But this is the first mass media outlet of the info, that I know of.

The plan for the hospital is to have room for a future expansion as the region continues to grow. This plan will attempt to avoid an over-build of the region, but still have the ability to respond to the explosive growth in the county! Currently the directors of the hospital are in negotiations with doctors who will run the departments, including the ER, the clinics etc. This will bring a huge economic boom to the region!

Even before construction has begun, the size of Bellevue's new hospital has grown.

Groundbreaking on the hospital, planned for the southwest corner of 25th Street and Nebraska Highway 370, has been pushed back from late fall to next spring as a result.

The Bellevue Medical Center still is expected to open in October 2008, said Dr. Richard Osterholm, chairman of the hospital's board of directors.

But it will open with 100 beds instead of the 60 that were planned when the $90 million project was announced in May, Osterholm said.

WASHINGTON — A Bellevue hospital now under construction is caught up in a legislative battle on Capitol Hill.

The $135 million Bellevue Medical Center — set to open next year at Highway 370 and 25th Street — will offer emergency care, intensive care and other medical services to those living in and around Nebraska's third-largest city.

The facility also will offer inpatient care — which hasn't been available at the area's other medical facility, Ehrling Bergquist Clinic on Offutt Air Force Base — since 2005.

But a proposal in Congress would throw a wrench into the project.

The proposal would bar new physician-owned hospitals from receiving Medicare reimbursements. Those reimbursements represent a substantial portion of a hospital's revenue, and the facility would not be able to operate without them.
