Speaking of Wal-Mart design, the supercenter at 180th and Center is changing its exterior paint scheme from the ugly blue to a more earth tone-y brown like the one on L at 132nd.

Among the changes made to the design that will differentiate it from other Wal-Mart stores in the Omaha area:

• The expansive parking lot will be broken up along every other row by up to 10-foot strips of grass and trees.
• The retaining walls will be terraced, with no fencing on the top. The walls will be shorter than in earlier designs.
• Significantly more masonry and less stucco-like material will be used on the building's facade.
• The facade will have a two-story appearance with faux windows at the upper levels. Many of the windows will have awnings.
• The storefront will have more indentations and angles, creating less of a look of one long wall.
• A covered plaza with benches will be built near the bus stop on 72nd Street.
• The garden center will be fully enclosed under a roof, instead of fenced-off in the parking lot.

Looks pretty good, there were more renderings on the world-herald earlier, but I don't know what happened to them

Anyone listen to the lady call into Todd and Tyler this morning. It was funny. Basically, she thought to many people would be dirivng through their neighborhood (meaning NOTHING can go up on 72nd?). She was also concerned that with Doctor Johns being there, people would be running around with guns from Wal*Mart and thingy's from Dr. Johns.

I agree with what TnT said. "Would you rather have a Wal*Mart adding convenience or people hanging around the Ranch Bowl at 3 in the morning doing blow?"

That's a bad analogy, the choice wasn't between Walmart and the Ranchbowl, the choice was between walmart and something new that the neighborhood actually wanted.

There is precious little that those neighbors would have liked though. Besides, its not really for them to choose who goes there. Its pretty tough to pick and choose if your going to allow commercial on that site.
Overall, its still a Wal-Mart but its the best one in town and thats a start. There is only so much you can do with a huge one story box!

The fact is the people in the area want the Walmart, if not, they won't shop there and the Walmart will close.

Like John Stewart said, our country is led by extremists. I cannot afford to take off 2 weeks of work to go to Texas and go on a hunger strike to protest the war. Yet, the freaks who do nothing but that get all the attention and can influence change.

Its only the one corner on 72nd and Hickory, which is actually the back of the building. The rest is going to face north.

A public hearing and vote on a proposed Wal-Mart store during a city council meeting resulted in a delayed decision.

Members voted four to two to hold the issue over until next week.

The Omaha City Council spent much of Tuesday afternoon on the subject and neighbors came to give the council their opinion on the matter.

The super store would be a 24-hour facility and questions were raised Tuesday about increased traffic and potential disturbances in the neighborhood.

They said this again on the news... arn't all wallmarts 24 hours? If they are worried about traffic in the middle of the night, watch out for sunday afternoon.

I get amazed at this city everytime someone wants to open a new ANYTHING. Everyone wants to be able to shop at these places but nobody wants them to be in their neighborhood.

I guess being a small town girl I get excited anytime anyone wants to open a new business. If you come from an area like I do and you can see everytime you go home how your town is dying you might begin to think differently about these things.

Everytime I go home to Arnold I see something else is gone. There used to be 5 resturants in town. Now all that is left is a bar to eat at and a fast food place. Used to be a drugstore, 2 grocery stores, theater, hardware store, lumber yard, sale barn and now all of it is gone. The population in the school has halved itself in the last two years. SAD and these things were there just ten years ago.

The only two things back home that have remained the same are the two bars on main street!

I caught a little bit of the Tnt thrid shift last night, and that lady who is complaining said that they sell guns at wal mart, when I was at my 180th and Center wal mart the other day, I noticed the guns were gone. I asked if they were going to start selling them again after the renovation and he said no that they aren't selling guns anymore, only fishing gear and hunting permits. I don't know if this is city wide or just that one store. But that gives those idiots one less argument if it is true.

I'm not really sure the city should be telling retail stores what their hours should be.

I do think it's funny that people try to fight Wal Mart from entering their neighborhood but they rarely fight Target.

Point well taken..I guess from a public reputation standpoint, Target is not looked upon as the 'evil empire of retail taking over the world'..Wal Mart is and I think therein lies a major reason..

I'd be curious to know the closest WalMart to Arnold, and when it opened. I see what the one in Fremont has done to local retail. It's pretty devastating, and it's not a unique anecdote. Surely, west O sprawl affects it, too, but it's amazing how there is WalMart and then a void where there used to be everything else.

Couple that with the traditional hemorrhaging of population from rural areas and tiny towns are screwed.

I agree with Big E.

A lot of the reason people are complaining so much is because wal*mart so decisively shuts down local businesses in near by areas.

Though there is some validity to the people complaining about it being open 24 hours. What with those bright parking lot flood lights...it really is a neighborhood. There are houses a half a block behind that building.

And people don't complain about Target because Target doesn't have the business modle of a virus.

Actually the nearest Walmart from Arnold is 50 miles away. Nope the town is just dying a slow death because there are no jobs available. Especially for young people who have just gotten out of college. Unless you are going to work on the family farm you are pretty much SOL for anything that pays more than minimum wage.

After I got out of nursing school I had to drive 40 miles one way, just to find a decent paying job. I had to drive 70 miles each way 5 days a week to attend school. There is just nothing to do around there besides farm work and a few other things.

I wasn't implying that Walmart or anything else is killing off the town just that fact that there is no new commerce there and no jobs for people. It would be really exciting for the town if a Walmart were to decide to come there. THink of all the job openings that would create!

WalMart won't go to Arnold because the people in Arnold are already driving 50 miles to where ever that one is.

People from all over northeast NE drive to the one in Norfolk for groceries - right past their locally owned and operated 85 year old market - to save $.25 on bananas and $.50 on milk. Nevermind the $17 in gas and two hours out of their lives they just spent in another local economy.
