I was out near 72nd a dodge today and I noticed that they are almost done tearing down that Taco Bell with the backwards drive through.

The backwards Taco Bell is no more.
I went to go there within the last week and it was closed. I wondered if they were finally going to tear it down and make a new one.
I asked a guy working there one time why the drive-thru was backwards and he said when they built the place it didn't have a drive-thru. When they went to add one later there wasn't enough room to put one on the regular side.

OK - are they replacing it with a new TB or is something else going in there?

They better be! If that one closes down I will have to go much further to get some TB. I had no clue that they tore this down, good thing I didnt go last night.Coyote wrote:OK - are they replacing it with a new TB or is something else going in there?

Good thing too, that place was a dump, trust me. I'm assuming its going to be a new TB built in there. BTW, this should be in the Urban forum since its east of 72nd St.

They got that thing down in matter of hours... I about crapped when i drove by and it was gone. I hope they have another toxic heck there for the only reason to help alleviate some of the traffic at the other dodge location. It can take half an hour to get your food at 2am sometimes.

Did anyone else ever notice they didn't have public restrooms inside of that place either? That place was a hole & I can't believe it took them 20 years to tear it down and redo it!

The restrooms were accessed outside of the building. It was a crappy building, hopefully they will improve the circulation.djc311 wrote:Did anyone else ever notice they didn't have public restrooms inside of that place either? It reminds me of traveling 10 years ago and having to stop at a gas station to go. Remember the big-|expletive| keys, often times attached to 2x4's or a cynder block?

It is being rebuilt. It will be somewhat better, and at least cleaner but the site is too small to really design it well.

From what I understand, this is why the 72nd St Taco Bell was bulldozed..midtown charlie wrote:Yeah, isn't Fuddruckers creating their Fuddruckers Plaza?

I thought that Fuddrucker's Plaza was going to be out west somewhere. Not where the old TB is.

You're probably right D'Shawn..Someone I was visiting with last night who most times 'know's what's up' insisted as such..
Most likely, they're bulldozing to rebuid a more modern TB..
Hopwfully someone who really knows will give us the scoop..

At one time I heard they were going to build a new TB where they ended up building that starbucks around the corner. My educated guess is that they are re-building in the same location. Usually when a Fast Food builds a new store in a different location, they will keep the old store open until the new one is built.

The sign says they are "renovating" -- in my book thats one heck of a renovation!

Renovating? Well they are keeping the sign.

Doubt it. I am sure it will be replaced when the new signs go up on the building.Coyote wrote:Renovating? Well they are keeping the sign.

I could be wrong but it seems signs are rarely if ever taken down even when the whole building goes. If I had to guess it is due to sign ordinances. I am guessing that it is difficult to get approval for a new sign and if they did it may have to be shorter so if they leave the pole no matter how rusted or gnarly it may be.

The sign pole is probably staying, so you guys are right to that extent. TB will certainly replace the plastic inserts w/ their new designs once things continue to move along. Also, the existing sign in place allows for TB to let others know they're going to stay there & are not closing permanently.

Charlie, that has long been the case, but I hope that the City has updated the sign ordinance. In most cities (newer ordinances) tie the sign to the use/structure. Many sisgn are "Grandfathered" as existing non-conforming uses but allowed to remain as long as the use/structure do not change. If the structure is remodeled (changing the structure by a cetain percentage) or removed then a new sign is required. This allows for the removal of many old, oversized, previously unregulated signs that were grandfathered.

We really need some new sign laws I think, I was in a Chicago suburb where everything had "monument" style signs that couldn't be over (I'm guessing ) 10ft tall. Lowe's, Wal-marts, Taco Bells, whatever, everything had short monument style sign and it makes it look 50 times better.

Part of OBD is signage. Hopefully monument signs will be required in most districts. This one, unfortunately, came about too soon. If you arent happy with signage though feel free to complain about the Citys zoning board of appeals. Those guys grant waivers all the time for a wide variety of really obnoxious and unnecessarily large signs.

Of course if the city would just adopt the 4 corners style development that everyone agreed to then this would (for the most part) be a non issue. Who needs to worry about whether a sign is monument style or a super tall metal post when the buildings line up next to the sidewalk and retail areas are truly walkable.

Your proposing a truly walkable area surrounding a 7-8 lane street? Cant always happen unfortunately.

What I am saying is that signs aren't the real problem. They are only a sympton of a bigger problem.

The backwards Taco Bell even garnered a letter to the editor today, as misguided as it was, from someone concerned about the one-of-a-kind-ness of the drive-thru.

I have been at the "backward" Taco Bell at 70th and Dodge Streets probably only five times in my 27 years in Omaha, but I was so sad to see its demolition. It was a classic.
Don't know about it? You've missed out. Where else can you go to a drive-through and pick up your food through the passenger window?

I am the "misguided" person that wrote that...
To be truthful, not so sad about the demo...but everyone knew about it no matter where you lived in Omaha. Obviously. Later I found out that there is a backwards drive thru Dairy Queen somewhere in North O. Anyone know for sure?

We had a IT guy at our work in from DC years ago who was staying across the street at the Residence Inn. We met him at Barrett's for a couple then called it a night. He stopped at that B on the way home and when he got to the pick up window he thought he might have had one too many. We had to tell him the next day as he told the story that it's always like that.
