Paxton lands Chop House eatery
Omaha World Herald wrote:Owners of a Des Moines restaurant that is a regular stop for politicians and national media representatives during presidential campaigns plan to open a steakhouse in downtown Omaha that will serve only USDA prime beef.

The 200-seat Chop House at the Paxton will open by June 1 on the first floor of the formerly grand hotel at 14th and Farnam Streets that is being renovated into upscale condominiums.

The 801's gentlemen's club atmosphere features etched glass, cherry wood, alabaster chandeliers, leather booths and private dining rooms for groups as small as eight. Lynch said that he expects a similar feel in Omaha but that the design will be "one of a kind" and true to the Paxton's art deco design.

Excellent get for the Paxton, but....a steakhouse serving only USDA prime beef is hardly unique, especially in Omaha.

Wow, excellent. It sounds like it will be quite nice. I can't wait to hear the other tenants announced.

801 Grand Steak and Chop is THE top notch steakhouse here. It doesn't get any better. That's great news for the Paxton.

Anyone who is able care to compare 801 with Omaha Prime in the OM?

I took a girlfriend to 801 in college once, and honestly, I wasn't terribly impressed. It's overpriced - and I don't mind paying for a great steak, but when said steak doesn't include any side dishes (salad, soup, etc) at those prices, it's ridiculous.

Granted, this was quite a few years ago now, so perhaps it's changed.

I'd still prefer a good steak at Angie's or Brother Sebastian's hands down...

I hope the other tenants offer something more public/pedestrian friendly than a restaurant.

yeah, yipty-do about another steakhouse, but what's great about this is that its a step closer to the derelict 16th St. corridor. It'd be really nice to see the area between the OM and the Near North Side fill in, perhaps with some help from the Holland Center opening.

Keep in mind this isn't another restaurant, or even another "steak house". This is a STEAK HOUSE. These are the types of places that you see listed in airline magazines, and the types of places that put cities on the culinary map. They bring other restaurants of this caliber to town when they prove there is a market for them.

Other than Omaha Prime and Fleming's (a chain), there's not a lot of true high-visibility high-end eating in Omaha. Trust me... other people will be watching the success of this endeavor.

do you really hold that much esteem for "the top steakhouse" lists you see in airline magazines?? So what. Do you really think if some Omaha steakhouse makes it onto one of those lists someone on a flight from New York to LA is going to get all excited to go eat steak in Omaha?

Omaha is already a great restaurant city. Whether or not the rest of the nation knows, so what.

There's a difference between being a great restaurant city and being a city with great restaurants. I think that's what Big E is getting at.

Or maybe it's just a matter of the 'high visibility'. For example, the best restaurant in Omaha is Cafe de Paris and I don't think most Omahans have even heard of it.

The Paxton Steak & Chop House will apparently have two floors of the Paxton. The first floor will have 4 or 5 private rooms and the main room, the second floor will have 184 seats in 3250 Sq ft of space in a large hall.

Has work begun on the restaurant? Also, any idea when owners start moving in?

Quick question...

Was the Paxton abandoned before they started turning it into condos?

The last that I can recall is that the Paxton was a residence for mental/physical health citizens - and that it had turned into a complete dump and may have been shut down . The place was an absolute disaster. This renovation is a huge blessing for this building - bringing back its former glory.

On Sunday, there was an ad in the jobs section for the "Paxton Steakhouse", with positions open for banquet manager, banquet chef, sous chef, pastry chef, etc. That is not your usual Omaha restaurant. There are not many places in Omaha with a dedicated pastry chef. Obviously, they are looking to do banquets also. The ad also said it was opening in October. Ask not why I am looking at restaurant ads in the paper.
Always a business-oriented city hungry for growth and focused on development with laser intensity, Omaha aimed high, reached for momentum and found critical mass.

But what's it going to be called???

found out that the far northwest bay in the Paxton will be an Ashley Lynn's Tanning. The corner bay hasn't been determined yet. Rumored to be a Jimmy Johns or another type of sandwich shop.

Whatever it is still the same project. My source works at the bank so I am talking about the bank.
