84th and Giles

I drove past the old Albertsons today at 84th and Giles
and noticed that No Frills is moving in - such a down grade.

Lesse Papillion/La Vista has: Super Target, No Frills, Bakers and soon to be Fareway, Super Walmart (06') that's 5 grocery stores within bout a mile of each other. Is this possible? 6 if you wanna count Tara Foods. I'd be suprised to see them all open in 5 years.

It will be a test for each of them I think. Although they all do offer a little different approach. I live a few blocks from the Fareway on Harrison and it is a great little neighborhood store. Great meat department and really good prices.

Sarpy County has a population of about 130,000. About 90% clustered in Bellevue and along Harrison from 42nd to about 192nd. I'm thinking they'll do ok.

What I find amazing... are all the 'Eagle' new subdivisions along Cornhusker (east of 72nd)... and no supermarket whatsoever... not so much as even a convenience store (although I know there is supposed to be a Fantasy's Food and Fuel going in at 72nd.

The time will come when La Vista will annex the 10 mile strip along Harrison St and become the longest city in the world. There have been rumors in the past few years about annexation. The population will jump from about 14,000 today to close to 35,000 if they annexed the strip. I doubt they would do that all at once. Imagine all the taxable property that would fill the coffers( along with all the debt).

I have seen them... never been to one. They look like a knock off of Papa John's (same strip mall type of locations).

I think you mean, they are a direct competitor of PapaMurphy's. PapaMurphy's is another Take 'N Bake pizza place, while Papa John's actually makes and delivers pizzas. I haven't had Daddio's before, but PapaMurphy's can be great. Especially their chicken pizzas. I think there's a Daddio's near Oakview, IIRC.

You're right... I meant Papa Murphy's... and yes, there is a Daddio's across the street from Oakview (in the strip mall on stilts... makes me think of that Lethal Weapon movie

although I noticed they 'boxed it in' recently... I think the neighbors are still waiting for all the landscaping which the developer promised).

No Frills opened its first store in a Council Bluffs warehouse in 1980 selling only groceries. It has since expanded to 10 stores in the Omaha area, most of which have such services as bakeries, film developing and flower shops, though several maintain a warehouse-style appearance.

According to the Food Marketing Institute, almost all new supermarkets have such services.

In June, No Frills and Bag 'N Save purchased 10 Albertsons stores in the Omaha area after Albertsons abandoned the market. No Frills later purchased the Papillion store, a former Albertsons that had been closed since 2002.

The store joins a crowded grocery scene in this town of 17,000. There is a SuperTarget at 718 N. Washington St., and Tara Foods is at 807 Tara Plaza. The Baker's store at 8010 S. 84th St. is just over the line in La Vista.

Fareway Foods is building a store at 72nd Street and Giles Road, and Wal-Mart got approval from a judge Monday to build a SuperCenter at that same intersection.

Papillion Mayor James Blinn said the growing number of families in the area made a grocery expansion inevitable.

"Five seems like it should be enough," he said, "but we'll see what the market decides. There might be room for more."

They moved to where A&W was located inside the Fantasys Phillips 66 south of the mall between BW3 and Mercedes-Benz of Omaha.

BW3 stands for "Buffalo Wild-Wings and Weck." Weck was the kind of bread used for their sandwiches. I don't know when they dropped the weck but they retained the BW3

Anyway I hope this No Frills puts the heat on Bakers to finally lower their ridiculous prices. I've had nothing but problems with Bakers and finally maybe we will see a lower priced quality store there. Albertsons was just as bad when they occupied the space so I don't have much hope but with the Fareway, and soon to be Wal-Mart Bakers the people of Papillion and LaVista will have some much needed choices on where they get groceries.

I've been feeling that new dig off 120th st.. Wing Stop. Fries are pretty good too but they can get soggy.. me don't like that.

That doesn't seem to be the case with Bakers and No Frills in North Omaha, and they are side by side up there. I dont shop at Bakers because of those stupid loyalty cards. I shop at No Frills right next door.

And about the whole Daddios thing: Whereas Papa Murphys is TakeNBake Pizza, Daddios bills itself as TakeNBake Italian and Mexican. You can get premade enchiladas and a pizza to cook at home yourself.

Best wings by far has to go to Buffalo Co. on 96th and L. Huge wings with great sauce beats the heck out of BW's and Hooters. Try it and if you don't like wings get their Buffalo Chicken sandwhich its fantastic. By far the best place in town. Just try it you will see.

Regarding the concentration of grocery stores in Papillion and La Vista, I find it very interesting that there is no Hy-Vee Store in Sarpy County (the Applewood store is close). I doubt Hy-Vee will be content to let the Sarpy County explosion continue without their share of the pie.

Perhaps they will be a part of the mix at Papillion Promenade...

My favorite used to be Ray's Buffalo Wings on 96th and L until they closed a few years ago. Then I happened upon the Buffalo Co. I agree OmahaRules, it is great. I try and get there for a Buffalo Chicken sandwich when I get back to Omaha.
