This week on GROW OMAHA:

An upscale clothing company is making a major impact on economic development in North Omaha. Wes & Willy's, which sells boys' clothing to 1,000 specialty and high-end department stores across the nation, is constructing a new headquarters and distribution center in the North Omaha Business Park. The $2 million, 35,000 sq. ft. facility will create 25 additional jobs. Tune in Saturday morning to learn about this fascinating company and why it will be located in North Omaha. Our guests will be Bill Mullen, owner of Wes & Willy's, as well as Chris Johnson, Vice President of W. Boyd Jones, the construction company working on Wes & Willy's new building.

Chris Johnson is Vice President of W. Boyd Construction company. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Iowa State University and is an active member of the American Institute of Architects. He is a registered architect of 12 years and is an Accredited Professional in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

Bill Mullen is an Omaha native who started in the clothing industry with Leggoons, a local company founded in 1983. In 1989, he left Leggoons and went to work for a clothing company in Virginia. A few months later, he started his own company, and the Wes & Willy's brand was born. Bill graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor degree in Political Science from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Hyman Sukiennik is Vice President for Cox Business Serivces, and Joe Seda is Vice President for Network Operations for Cox Communications. We will also take a little time to discuss the annual Cox Classic Golf tournament to be held at Omaha's Champions Run Country Club in August. As Omaha continues to evolve into a more prominent player in the global economy, it is attracting more international attention. Increasingly, foreign companies are considering Omaha when searching for a base to do business in the United States. A great example is the Brazilian Consortium of Stones (BCS), a consortium of seven Brazilian granite companies, that chose Omaha for its U.S. headquarters and first-ever granite distribution center outside of Brazil.

Whatever else you do this weekend, make sure you listen to Grow Omaha, because this discussion relates directly to Omaha's future. To stay competive in today's economy, cities must think internationally. We'll discuss why BCS chose our community, and we'll learn what Omaha is doing to recruit even more international firms.

It's time for a progress report on Destination Midtown, an ambitious program designed to redevelop a 3.5- square-mile area just west of downtown. Big plans are underway in Midtown. The Child Savings Institute recently announced an $8.7 million building project in the area. Midtown boosters are working hard to lure upscale retailers to the neighborhood. Several development projects are currently on the drawing board. Our guest will be Tawanna Black, Destination Midtown's Executive Director. Be sure to tune in and learn more about redevelopment efforts in the heart of Omaha's urban core.

Nielsen Company. Don't miss our fascinating interview with A.J. Scribante in Part I of this week's show.

A group of business and community representatives is working to form a Business Improvement District (BID) in Downtown Omaha to strengthen Downtown's image and influence while helping increase sales, occupancies and property values. The proposed BID goes before the Omaha City Council next week. If passed, Downtown property owners would pay annual fees based on their assessed real estate values. The money would make Downtown more attractive, desirable and competitive. Proponents argue that an active Downtown Omaha BID would provide an economic development boost, making it easier to recruit new businesses to the Downtown area. While most would agree that Downtown Omaha could use a little sprucing up, the proposed BID has generated controversy and opponents are gearing up for a big fight. We'll talk about the proposed BID during Part II of this week's show with Curtis Christensen, a local attorney and Chairman of the Downtown Omaha BID Committee.

Core customers comprise 20 percent of a business's customer base but provide more than 80 percent of all profits. In the new book "The Must-Have Customer: 7 Steps to Winning the Customer You Haven't Got", author and former Richman Gordman president Robert Gordman shows businesses how to get rid of the occasional or opportunistic customers and focus their energy on retaining core customers and targeting the kind of customer they really want. Be sure to tune into the first half of this week's show to hear our enlightening interview with Bob Gordman. In addition to his vast retail experience, Mr. Gordman has served as a Senior Consulting Partner for the Gallup Organization. He is currently president of the Gordman Group.

In recognition of 35 years of doing business in Omaha, we're going to focus on First Data Corp. during the second half of this week's show. Since its start in 1971, First Data has grown into a global electronic commerce and payment company and has become one of Omaha's largest employers. Of the 93 counties in Nebraska, Douglas County is the most populous but also the second smallest in geographic size. That means that Omaha's home county will soon run out of development land. To deal with the finite amount of ground in Douglas County, officials developed a new comprehensive plan earlier this year. The new plan determines how the remaining land will be developed. Space is reserved for commercial, residential and civic uses. Other areas have been designated for natural green space. Be sure to tune in this weekend to learn how the comprehensive plan will affect Omaha's growth and development.

Our guests will be Marty Shukert and Kent Holm. Mr. Shukert is a principal in RDG Planning & Design. Before entering the private sector he served as Director of the City of Omaha Planning Department. He received a B.A. in City Planning from Yale University and a Master of Architecture degree from the University of California Berkeley. Kent Holm is Director of Environmental Services for Douglas County. Among his many responsibilities, he oversees planning and zoning. Mr. Holm holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources and a Master of Science degree in Forestry, Fisheries & Wildlife, both from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

This week our focus will be on Hawkins Construction Company. As one of the largest construction firms in the area, Hawkins has a long list of marquee projects in Omaha, not the least of which is the $102 million West Dodge Expressway. This promises to be an interesting topic; be sure to tune in!

Our guest will be Tracy L. Mumford, Vice President and Business Development Director at Hawkins Construction. Prior to his current position, Tracy was assigned to Hawkins' corporate office as a Project Engineer, working on commercial building projects. It's time for our quarterly economic development discussion with David Brown, President and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. Omaha's economy is strong -- businesses are expanding and buildings are under construction. There is much to discuss, so listen to Grow Omaha this Saturday to hear about the current state of Omaha's growth and development with Omaha's chief economic developer.

Since taking the helm in October 2003, David Brown has charted a new course for the Chamber, establishing it as a catalyst for public policy, economic development, workforce development and small business development. David grew up in Michigan and earned a bachelor's degree in 1979 from Dartmouth College, where he majored in geography and played football with the team that won the 1978 Ivy League championship. After college, he went to work for Monroe County, Mich., as an assistant planner, then for Flint, Mich., with the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission. In 1983, at the age of 25, he became President of the new Monroe County Industrial Corp. Brown went on to become the vice president of economic development at the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Chamber of Commerce. When the Fort Wayne Chamber's President announced his resignation, the board promoted Brown. He held the position for six years before leaving to accept the job of President and CEO of the Greater Greenville (S.C.) Chamber of Commerce. In his eight years there, he helped bring $4 billion in investments and 16,000 new jobs to South Carolina. He and his wife, Maggie, were married in 1982. They have two sons, Gregory and Elijah.

With one of the largest chamber memberships in the nation, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to continuing the Omaha area's tremendous momentum. An investor base of 200 companies has pledged nearly $20 million over five years to the development initiative. In 2004, the Chamber assisted companies that committed $166 million in capital investment and created more than 2,000 jobs. Overall, the eight-county metropolitan area is benefiting from more than $3 billion in capital investment. Taking its role as advocate to Lincoln, the Chamber in 2005 partnered with the Governor and leaders at the State Capitol to champion the passage of a landmark incentive legislation package. Provisions for capital investment, tax exemptions, and credits for manufacturers, research and development and micro- enterprises promise to make the state an even greater attraction for business in the years to come.

When the legendary Caniglia's restaurant at 7th & Pierce Street closed, many long-time Omahans felt a sense of loss. For decades, the restaurant had been an anchor in the south-side neighborhood known as "Little Italy." Now a local real estate developer plans to convert the old Caniglia's site into a new urban neighborhood, known as "The Towns at Seventh & Little Italy". This exciting development would include town houses with front porches and very small lawns. It would be laid out in a true urban style: dense and close to the street. Be sure to tune in to the first half of Grow Omaha this week to hear how Christian Christiansen of Bluestone Development plans to make this $8 million project come to life.

Like a lot of large American cities, Omaha has seen an explosion in the number of coffeehouses over the past few years. Seemingly every commercial corner in town has a Starbuck's, Scooter's, Caribou or some other coffee shop, and many more locations are on the way. During the second half of this week's show, we're going to explore the competitive and fast-growing coffee market in Omaha. For our main topic this week, we're going to shine the "construction spotlight" on The Buland Group, an Omaha-based construction services firm doing business in five states. Periodically, Grow Omaha invites an Omaha construction executive into the studio to tell us about local building projects as well as the trends in the construction business. Our guest this week is Larry G. Buland, President of Buland Group Construction Services. Before entering the construction business several years ago, Larry was a Trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol. He joined The Buland Group in 1999 and bought the company in 2003. Larry holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

In addition to our main topic, we have two bonus interviews planned. At the beginning of the show, we'll talk to Shawn McAndrews, the local franchisee of Fantastic Sam's, the nation's largest chain of hair salons. Fantastic Sam's is entering the Omaha market with their first store at The Thomsen Mile, northwest of 168th & Maple. As the head of local government, Mayor Mike Fahey has a great perspective on Omaha's growth and development. That's why you should tune in to Grow Omaha this Saturday. Find out more about Omaha's recent development and the possibility for more exciting projects in the future. On June 12, 2001, Mike Fahey was sworn in as the 49th Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska. From 1978 to 1997, he worked in the title insurance business, founding his own company. Throughout the years, Fahey has served in a variety of community leadership positions including several boards of directors. For ten years, starting in 1981, Fahey sat on the Omaha Planning Board and served as chairman for many of those years. He graduated from Creighton University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Toward the end of the show, we'll chat with nationally known economist Jeff Thredgold, President of Utah- based Thredgold Economic Associates. Jeff has appeared on numerous national television shows and has written a weekly economic newsletter for 30 years. Later this month, he will be the keynote speaker at The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce's annual Economic Outlook Luncheon. Be sure to tune in and hear what Jeff Thredgold has to say about national and regional economic conditions.

It's time for our quarterly economic development discussion with David Brown, President and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. Omaha's economy is strong -- businesses are expanding and buildings are under construction. There is much to discuss, so listen to Grow Omaha this Saturday to hear about the current state of Omaha's growth and development with Omaha's chief economic developer.

Since taking the helm in October 2003, David Brown has charted a new course for the Chamber, establishing it as a catalyst for public policy, economic development, workforce development and small business development. David grew up in Michigan and earned a bachelor's degree in 1979 from Dartmouth College, where he majored in geography and played football with the team that won the 1978 Ivy League championship. After college, he went to work for Monroe County, Mich., as an assistant planner, then for Flint, Mich., with the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission. In 1983, at the age of 25, he became President of the new Monroe County Industrial Corp. Brown went on to become the vice president of economic development at the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Chamber of Commerce. When the Fort Wayne Chamber's President announced his resignation, the board promoted Brown. He held the position for six years before leaving to accept the job of President and CEO of the Greater Greenville (S.C.) Chamber of Commerce. In his eight years there, he helped bring $4 billion in investments and 16,000 new jobs to South Carolina. He and his wife, Maggie, were married in 1982. They have two sons, Gregory and Elijah. With one of the largest chamber memberships in the nation, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to continuing the Omaha area's tremendous momentum. An investor base of 200 companies has pledged nearly $20 million over five years to the development initiative. In 2004, the Chamber assisted companies that committed $166 million in capital investment and created more than 2,000 jobs. Overall, the eight-county metropolitan area is benefiting from more than $3 billion in capital investment. Taking its role as advocate to Lincoln, the Chamber in 2005 partnered with the Governor and leaders at the State Capitol to champion the passage of a landmark incentive legislation package. Provisions for capital investment, tax exemptions, and credits for manufacturers, research and development and micro- enterprises promise to make the state an even greater attraction for business in the years to come.

Located on the northern edge of Omaha, the historic Florence neighborhood was once its own city. Long before that, in 1846, it served as "The Winter Quarters" for Mormon pilgrims migrating west. Today, several historical attractions are located in Florence, including the Mormon Trail Center at Historic Winter Quarters and the Mormon Pioneer Cemetery. With all this history, some local leaders see a great deal of tourism potential in Florence. Could Florence become a major tourist attraction someday?
