Development Near Westside Moves Forward

http://www.ketv.com/news/10707033/detail.html
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha City Council voted on Tuesday to pass a preliminary plat for a controversial land development near Westside High School.

The proposal would turn two single-home lots into a gated six-home subdivision along Pacific Street between 84th and 85th streets. The planning department in September gave its approval for the one-story town house subdivision called Village Oaks.

The couple who proposed the project said it will improve the neighborhood, but dozens of their neighbors disagree.
In a public hearing, the developers' attorney argued that similar in-fill projects, such as Arbor Sanctuary, Spring Green and Grand Oaks were initially fought by neighbors but now compliment their surroundings.

Neighbors said they bought in an area with covenant that guaranteed large lots and old-growth trees. A spokesman for the neighbors said the Village Oaks proposal creates 8,000- to 10,000-square-foot lots, compared with the 60,000-square-foot lots surrounding it.

The Neighbor's should worry about the price of the house not the size of the lot. However, I HOPE they don't remove any of the Large Old Trees in that neighborhood.

1950 Omaha Covenant Says Only Whites May Inhabit Neighborhood
Controversial Development Sees New Twist

KETV wrote:A 57-year-old document revealed by an Omaha city councilman on Wednesday puts a new twist on the fight over a high-priced housing development.

A neighborhood covenant obtained by Councilman Frank Brown says only white people should live in the Omaha neighborhood. The covenant was issued in 1950. Item 11 reads: "No person other than that of the Caucasian race shall be or become an owner ... or lessee except as a servant of a family."

Looks like a good development for the area. It should do nothing but increase the property values of the neighbors.
